A Safe Darkness coalesced out of a bit of Linkin Park\'s \"Somewhere I Belong\" and a bit of thinking about the depressed and depersonalized state I was in after my own rape and from a conversation in which thrashrases \"healing isn\'t pretty\" and \"freedom in surrender\" came up.
I cannot imagine that she does not have Tom Riddle somehow bound up in the deep parts of her psyche. And menstruation, especially the first time, can be rather startling and frightening for a girl. And so I thought about her developing sexuality and womanhood, and about my own crushes as a young adolescent, and...it developed.
