Chapter 2 : Making Dumbledore cry
First thing the next morning, Hermione went to Dumbledore\'s office and
told him about the dream.
Dumbledore\'s hair had gone as white as the snow after Lord Voldemort\'s
defeat, as if fighting against the Dark Forces had partially prevented
hiom aom age and that the death of his mortal enemy had put an end to
the exception. He listened to her with attention, and she could see
understanding spreading through his face as she made a description of
the castle and Lady Slytherin.
\"What does it mean? Is it a real memory or some sort of a dream?\"
\"As far as you described it, it looked like a real memory. I would date
it around Severus\' twentieth birthday. At the time, we thought Lord
Voldemort had been defeated for good. Severus had some very good
reasons to be proud of himself.\"
\"Why did he go there? He could have stayed at Hogwarts.\"
\"I had considered it would be good for him to be away for a while. To
only take care of himself and not wonder who was to be trusted, or who
might try to stab him in the back. I have never really been part of the
noble wizard society, and I suppose I underestimated its capacity for
nuisance.\"
She had long ceased to consider the Headmaster as omniscient but this
blatant acknowledgment of his misjudgment in such a circumstance made
her blood boil.
\"What happened then? Were they a part of Voldemort\'s followers?\"
She shivered, thinking of what might have happened to him, being
trapped in some of the strongest worshippers of the Dark Lord he had
betrayed.
\"No, the Slytherin family was not really part of the wizarding world
anymore. The fact is there were no more male members of the family to
carry on the Name and, consequently, they were considered as good as
dead by most of the \"pure-blood\". However, I think Severus suspected
them at some point to have had connections with the former Tom Riddle.\"
\"Who? Lady Slytherin?\"
The Headmaster nodded.
\"You mean, she...\"
She was at loss for words. The Headmaster frowned.
\"The noble wizarding world is a very odd society, nobody speaks but
everybody knows. Lady Slytherin was once married with Fidel Slytherin
who died in a very mysterious manner. She was imatelately banned from
the good society and rumors appeared about her... affair with a young
wizard called Tom Riddle.\"
Hermione felt positively sick. She knew Voldemort had been human once,
but his name was for ass associated with a livid snake with glowing red
eyes… nothing really romantic.
\"So it was one of the Professor’s memories?\"
\"Yes. You both must be quite close indeed if you witnessed it with such
clarity.\"
Hermione sighed.
\"Does it have anything to do with the fact he doesn\'t wake up?\"
\"Yes. It might be very presumptuous of me to interpret Severus\' psyche,
but I think something is keeping him there… something or someone. \ \"H \"How is it possible to help him?\"
\"There\'s always a key in dreams, although it doesn\'t always look like a
key. But the cure could be fatal.\"
\"What do you mean?\"
The Headmaster seemed very old and very sad.
\"What keeps us fighting, is also what keeps us alive. If you destroy
his reason to fight, you might also destroy his reason to live.\"
Hermione considered the possibility, but she had already made her
choice.
\"I will help him. I cannot stay here and wait. I know we will never
agree on that, Headmaster, but I cannot leave people to their fate.\"
\"What you call ‘leaving people to their fate’ is what I call ‘freedom
of choice,’ he pointed. \"Women always think they should make the
choices for our own good.”
\"Is this ‘freedom of choice’ the reason Harry nearly went on
Voldemort\'s side? Is it justifying Ron\'s death? Are you sure your
obsession for considering people like pawns in your personal battle
against Voldemort hasn\'t deprived you from any human feelings?\"
She saw the tears in the old man\'s eyes and cursed herself once more
for not holding her tongue.
\"I\'m sorry, Albus. That wasn\'t fair.\"
His voice was weak and broken.
\"Don\'t worry, Miss Granger, I knew it would come. I just wondered who
would dare to say it aloud. I should have guessed you would be the one.\"
She remained silence while he whipped the tears away from his blue eyes.
\"Go, Miss Granger. Go ahead. That\'s what you\'ve already decided to do.
Find the key, free Severus. But bear in mind you\'re only human…like all
of us.\"
Hermione nodded and left.
