Title : Thank You, Miss Granger
Many thanks to Taya who beta-read this chapter.
Disclaimer : See first chapter
I\'ve been asked about the allusion to a \"goat\" in the title of the first chapter \"We need a goat\". It\'s a reference to a method for hunting tigers :
Tie a goat to a tree and wait until a tiger comes, led by the bleating. When it\'s close enough: shoot! The only disadvantage is that sometimes the goat gets killed *before* you manage to kill the tiger.
Chapter Two : All the things you don\'t need to know
Dumbledore and McGonagall left without comment.
\'Sit down.\'
Hermione took a seat, hands politely clasped in her lShe She was intensely aware of her body position; it reminded her of tea parties with her grandmother\'s friends. She focused on her Professor\'s face, trying to look awake and attentive.
\'I am afraid my previous self will not be any fonder of politeness and idle chit-chat than I am, Miss Granger.\'
\'As I do not have, as you do, the ability to read minds, would you be kind enough to explain to me what I am to do?\'
Severus Snape\'s face was unreadable. When he answered, his voice was even softer than before.
\'It is actually quite interesting that you may raise this point, as my Legilimency skills appeared around the age of fifteen.\'
Hermione swallowed with difficulty as the implications of the statement made their way into her mind.
\'You mean... your former self will be able to read my thoughts?\'
\'Not exactly. Legilimency is a very complex science, as complex as the human mind, although the behaviour of Gryffindors seems dedicated to contradicting that statement.\'
\'So, he won\'t be able to read exactly what my thoughts are?\'
Right, so the old animosity was back. She hated his tendency to beat about the bush. She needed information if she was to go on a mission, and how could she possibly be a spy if someone was to read her thoughts?
His face looked somehow softer in the firelight. The lack of audience also seemed to change his behaviour slightly. He openly fixed her with his gaze. She realized he had hardly looked at her during the previous years, just a quick annoyed glance when she was eagerly raising her hand for any question, or a frown when she was trying to prevent Neville from making a fool of himself, a lifetime mission. Now, this insistent observation made her feel like she was going through an exam. An exam she had no idea how to pass.
She felt like a foolish pet on display. She hated him for that.
\'At the time, my ss wes were still rough, but I was able to tell the difference when somebody was lying to me. Emotions were also very easy to read. Emotions like the one you are experiencing at this very moment.\'
\'Why didn\'t you choose one of your precious Slytherins then? I\'m sure they are much more efficient than me at hiding their emotions!\'
Hermione\'s voice had reached a peak. But, as usual, one part of her mind was safe from the wave of emotions. It had always been so when she was subject to strong pressure: one part of herself was diving in her emotions while the other remained on the shore, analysing the problem. It was not a conscious decision but more a form of self-protection since her feelings were nearly as powerful as her mind. Sometimes emotions would feed her reflection, especially when she got ready for an exam, but sometimes the hurricane of fears was becoming too powerful. She had been through it when dealing with the Time-Turner during her third year.
While she sounded like a crazy harpy, her blurred mind was scanning the upsetting wizard in front of her. He had the same calculating look he had given them for the last six years. She had first thought it was his way of making students ill-at-ease, an efficient trick to awaken the guilty consciences. She didn\'t know at the time that he actually had the ability to see through appearances, that what was considered as teachers\' sixth sense had been, in his case, a teleic sic skill.
\'No, not telepathic, that\'s much too vague, Miss Granger\'.
\'How did you-?\'
\'You mind is wide open, Miss Granger. Too many thoughts, too much emotion\'.
She breathed deeply and sat down. She did not recoil standing up during her previous tirade, but undoubtedly she had. Then, he spoke.
\'It is because you have no aptitude for hiding your feelings that I find you the best candidate. This, and your natural tendency to empathise, is a very powerful combination. And believe me, Miss Granger, real empathy is very rare.\'
She realized this was no exam. She had already been chosen, though she could not imagine why. She was desperately trying to understand how her tendency to support the most desperate cases was supposed to help.
\'So... what is my mission exactly? Am I supposed to stand in front of him, say: \"Could you give me this sample, please?\" with a smile, and leave?\'
\'Never lie to him. Not directly, at least.\'
She frowned.
\'I\'m no Slytherin, Sir. I know what a lie is, but I cannot see the difference between a direct lie and an indirect one.\'
She was rewarded by an amused cold glance.
\'Curious. Girls are usually very aware of the subtlety.\'
\'I suppose the girls you think of are mostly Slytherin girls. In which case, you might be right. However, they do not stand for the rest of us.\'
She smiled. She was about to add something about Gryffindor girls, but he cut through.
\'Are you so sure of that, Miss Granger? I was under the impression you were not such a bad liar, especially for a Gryffindor.\'
It\'s not fair, she thought, Legilimency should be used to fight the Dark Arts, not to take advantage of students. Moreover, she didn\'t want all of her teachers to know about it.
\'Classic.\'
\'I beg your pardon?\'
\'You are not worried about lying but about being caught, that\'s classic. Gryffindors are much more commonplace than they think.\'
Of course, he was teasing her. He knew everything about her lies. Harry had warned her about the danger of strong emotions when facing a Legilimens, and she had walked straight into the trap. Did he ever do anything without a good reason? She should have known. She would not make the same mistake with his younger self. She steeled herself, thinking about the reasons for being chosen: empathy and lies. Not the things she was the most proud of.
\'Is that why you chose me? It\'s a personality thing in a way.\'
\'It is always a personality thing.\'
There was a touch of bitterness in his voice. At this point, Hermione did not reply and silence invaded the room.
**************
\'It happened after a potions class. I was ordered to destroy a sample of a potion that had been accidentally made. And so I did. We need that sample. You are, to my knowledge, the only person who might be able to get it back in a... diplomatic way.\'
Hermione nodded.
\'Time-turners are tricky weapons because of their potential influence on future and therefore on our present. I am, as you probably know, a decisive pawn in the war against the dark forces. It is essential that my actions after this little interlude follow their natural path. You will, therefore, NOT tell me anything about the future. Not a single word.\'
Hermione felt a curious twist in her head, something like a buried pain, as she turned away. It took her a short while to recover from the curious feeling and to look at him again. He was watching her carefully.
\'Why is it so urgent to get that sample back? Is it a... matter of Life and Death?\'
\'I suppose you could say that. Considering my former self’s ability as a Legilimens, there are some things you would better not know, for the benefit of the mission\'.
It made sense, although she dit lit like it.
\'You will appear in the classroom before the lesson starts, it will be empty. Remain as much as possible out of sight, it is better to avoid any visual contact apart from... my former self. I... he will have the sample in his possession at the end of the lesson when everybody else is gone. At this point you will show yourself and tell him you come from Dumbledore and you have to get the sample. Do not give any more information. The more self assured and direct you are, the better.\'
\'And it won\'t be a lie?\'
\'Dumbledore is indirectly sending you. So it is half a lie; it should be enough. Try not to think too loudly and it will be.\'
Was it supposed to be humour? She felt slightly dizzy. The balance between the urgency for that sample, whatever it might be, and the improvisation... It was nothing like she had gone through re, re, no monsters to fight, no spells to cast, no Death Eaters... just a sixteen year old boy. It couldn\'t be worse than a potions exam.
\'Can I change my clothes before the mission?\'
He simply waved his wand to her pyjamas and she found herself dressed in her usual school clothes, apart from the Gryffindor colours, which were replaced by Slytherin\'s. She looked at him but swallow her comment. His eyes went over the disguise before meeting hers.
\'Now I am ready you your other self, am I?\'

Thank you so much for the reviews!
It\'s my first fic and I was very pleased some people find the story original, as a time-turner fic, I wasn\'t aware it had anything special.
More specific answers:
GlindaTrisstt - Thank you for spotting the \"goat\" thing, I\'m sure other readers also wondered where it came from.
Hopelsydreaming - The only reasons I see for not finishing this story is getting abducted by aliens, having my Internet access crashed or becoming amnesic after an accident, gr, great chances it will be updated until the end!
shiv5468 and Deeble - Yes, I like Hermione when she is fighting back. One of my favourite scenes in the books is when she decides to quit Divination. Nobody else dared to do it.
Deeble - I also think Minerva and Severus are friend but this is kind of an emergency case and... mmmm, maybe more clear in a few chapters.
Kiristeen, Bambu and ladydeathfaerie - About the legilimency skill : \"People who look for secrets take the risk to find some\". That\'s my motto.
ShagsTheDustmop - Teenage boys and sex. *grin* Well... I don\'t know what to add, just happy my brother hasn\'t got a chance to read that bit, not sure he would appreciate.
Demosthenes - What do you mean by: \"Coming back to present, eventually\", it\'s a mission! She HAS to come back! Or at least that\'s what she\'s been ordered... LOL. Wait and see.
XxphenixX - I haven\'t seen \"10 Things I Hate About You\", but I will consider it if there a goat sequence!
Why did Harry and Ron force Hermione to drink vodka? To help her to relax and let it go before the NEWTs, I guess. Do you think something else happened?! That\'s not very nice for Hermione...
(whispering: and thanks for the grammar mistake)
IrishRavenX - Thank you.
