The Other Side

"Master! I wa-" S-" Seras stopped when she realised the second presence. "Who's there?"

"Hush!"

Seras went completely still as she waited impatiently for her master to materialise. In a moment, he was standing before her, another man's hand in his own. A pang of jealousy shot through her before she realised that the other vampire was not of her own master's making.

"Sorry, Master," she whispered ashamedly.

The companion vampire looked dazed. He was staring around him, but not seeing anything. It was obviously the first time he'd traveled without his usual form.

"Seras... This is Severus Snape."

The woman-vampire's mouth stretched into a delighted smile. "Oh!" she exclaimed very quietly. "Lovely to meet you, Sir." She extended her hand, which the other took hesitantly. "Seras Victoria at your service."

"Pleasure, I'm sure," Snape replied, voice very soft. He was rather surprised to see the girl bow a bit before him.

"Sir Integra is expecting you," Seras informed her master. "She's been waiting all day, and-"

Arucard held up his hand to silence her. "Thank you, Miss Victoria. You may report back to your post now."

Seras threw Arucard's back a very, very fierce glare.

**

"Arucard! What is the meaning of this!? You were sent to-" Integra stopped herself short, and put her hand to her forehead. After calming herself, she took a small cigar from the box on her desk and lit it. "Tell me you've brought me another orphan?" she said, smiling a bit maliciously.

"I've brought you a gift, Sir Integra," the vampire purred, the humour rather apparent in his tone.

"A gift? What, pray, is the name this gift goes by?" She directed this last bit at Severus, who had not taken his eyes off her since they'd entered the room.

"Severus Snape, Sir," he replied, again very quietly, as though he didn't want to be heard. He extended his hand, which made the woman smile.

"Severus Snape," she repeated thoughtfully. Without thinking, a habit as nervous as her smoking itself, she stubbed out the less-than-half-smoked cigar in the crystal tray. "I've heard your name before. Tell me... who is your master?"

Once again, hopelessness washed over the vampire's features. "I don't have a master, Sir."

Instead of being put-out, Integra merely changed her line of questioning. "Are you telling me that no other vampire touched you? You never shared blood with another vampire?"

"No, Sir. I never shared blood."

"And yet... how is it possible that he is not a Freak, Arucard?"

The question was rhetorical, and Arucard knew it. He grinned and leaned back on his master's desk. "Freaks are all sorts, Sir," he snickered. "One does not need a computer chip to create a vampire. All one needs is magick."

Integra blinked. "You've gone mad."

"If only that would explain it!" laughed Arucard, practically laying down on the desk. "No, my dear, Integra... A wizard by the name of Tom Marvolo Riddle has taken a bit of our pie and shared it with some unwitting individuals. Tom Marvolo Riddle is to blame. And Severus can tus tus to him."

"I'll do nothing of the sort!" Severus cried, suddenly very animated, for though he had heard every word, none of it had seemed to warrant much response. "I am not going into that lion's den again! Voldemort is... out of my league. He's out of your league! You and your organisation!"

Integra looked at Arucard, and he looked at her. They smiled the same smile at exactly the same time.

***

"Insanity," Severus muttered as he curled up in his bed. "It is complete insanity. The whole lot of them are mad!"

The vampire, Arucard, returned the Potions Master to Hogwarts just before sunrise. He left promptly thereafter, and Severus stripped, showered, dried, eredered, and went to bed soaking wet. His world had been effectively turned upside down and inside out in the course of a single night and there wasn't any outward sign at all.

"Sir Integra Wingate Hellsing," he whispered to the darkness. "Sir Integra, you are a bold human being to ask what you do of me. I'd tell you to sod yourself if I thought I might survive the experience."

The leader of the Hellsing Organisation was a formidable woman by any standards, but Severus' own were very lofty, especially where women were concerned. She had silenced his protests with a flash of her stern eyes, then proceeded to outline how Severus would serve her in exchange for sparing his life. He was to be the one to stage the attack on Malfoy Manor, where the Dark Lord was alleged to be residing. It would be he, Severus, who would lead the Hellsing army into the bowels of the mansion with the intention of weeding out Lord Voldemort.

"And that crazy demon with his silly little guns! Muggle weaponry... honestly!"

Blessed bullets or not, Severus highly doubted that they would be effective against Voldemort. He was a creature so foul, he couldn't be called human. He could only partially be classified as alive, since he existed only as a spirit for so long. His body wasn't even real! It was the result of a very advanced ritual; not bonding of flesh and blood as he so liked to claim that it was. How could mere bullets take the life of such a creature?

But doubt could be a powerful foe, so he put those thoughts to the back of his mind. In an attempt to relax, he stretched out and focused on how the cool sheets felt on his naked skin. He felt so much more clean than he had an hour earlier when he finally agreed to lead the expedition that he was sure would lead to his ruin.

"Fuck yourself, good, you do," he sighed, then drifted into sleep.

*****

For those of you not familiar with Hellsing, it is about an organisation (duh) that protects the Queen of England and the Protestant church. They employ two vampires, Arucard (or Alucard, depending on how you prefer to translate it) and Seras Victoria. Arucard is a product of years of experimentation and there is a great deal of mystery surrounding his existence and employment. What it obvious is that he serves Sir Integra with complete trust and faith, and would easily give his life for her. Seras (I'm going with how she's referred to in both manga and anime, and that is traditionally Japanese with the surname preceding the given name) was turned by Arucard during an early mission and has been a member of the organisation ever since. I'm assuming this is following the end of the anime series, after Com. Peter Ferguson's death.
