The Root of Evil
Chapter Nineteen: The Root of Evil
Lucius sat shaken in Angela’s tent on site. She had copied down the words before they had melted back into the ancient wood.
The onsite translator was attempting to make sense of the muddled up Welsh.
“This is in an old dialect I think, what I am coming up with does not really make any sense.”
“Could it be a spell of some kind, Welsh mixed with Latin?” Hermione asked looking over the words.”
“No, the spell would have picked up any Latin roots in the words, Do we have any books in old Welsh around I could use to manipulate the spell better?”
“As a mater of fact, Hermione that spell book you gave me for Christmas has a considerable amount of old Welsh spells, that could be of some use.” Lucius said, still looking rather unsteady.
“It could be, I think we should wrap up for now and get a fresh start in the morning.” Hermione was worried for Lucius and thought it best to get him away from the house before the team delved any deeper into this particular mystery.
“Agreed, we have made more headway in the last few hours than in the past four weeks.” Angela announced and dismissed the team for a much needed early day of R&R.
~~
The drive back to inn was quiet. Lucius was focused on the passing countryside out the window, his right hand clasping onto his left forearm.
Hermione ushered him in and up the stairs quickly and quietly; the second she shut the door his arms were around her, clinging as if she were the only thing keeping him alive.
“Lucius my darling.” She soothed, rubbing his back as he lifted her into his arms, her legs going around his hips as he brought them to the bed.
He cuddled them close, his legs trapping hers, their noses brushing lightly as he nuzzled her.
She did not speak, did not ask all the thousands of questions that were running through her brilliant mind. She just held him. Lucius Malfoy, death eater, spy, extremely cunning, intelligent wizard had been dealt a powerful blow that day.
“Whatever is in that house is evil, and it knows me.” He mumbled into her neck. “It is calling out to me.” He pulled her even closer.
She was his light, what was keeping him from the darkness.
“But I know you as well - the good wizard who has repented and paid for his past sins. And whatever it is cannot have you Lucius because I do not share well. So it may recognize your old self, but this Lucius in my arms is totally different.” She whispered rubbing her nose against his.
He sighed and kissed her forehead, “I think I need to call Severus and get him here, he is the only other wizard I know strong enough to handle whatever is in there.”
“How will you contact him?”
“We have talking glasses, he should be able to get away from the school for a little bit.”
“While you talk to the Professor, I will go run us a nice hot bath.” She kissed him and slipped from the bed and headed for the bathroom.
Lucius got up and rummaged through his trunk for the old mirror that he had carried around for over three decades, a life line to his dearest friend.
He opened the connection and waited, a few moments later the image of the Severus Snape appeared within the frame.
“Lucius? Is everything okay?’ he asked.
“We found something today, well I did, and whatever it is- Merlin Sev I think it is part of him.”
“Of whom?”
“The Dark Lord.”
“He is long dead Lucius, his essence destroyed.”
“Whatever is down there is connected to him, gods Sev - I summoned up the message with the conjuring spell. I never thought I would utter that word again.”
“What message?”
“It was in old Welsh and we are attempting to translate, but I know it is his doing, my mark even tingled.”
“I will contact the Minister and will be there shortly, we will destroy whatever it is together old friend.”
“Until then Sev.”
When the glass went dark Lucius rose and headed to the bathroom. He was greeted with the sight of Hermione kneeling by the large claw foot in her powdery blue bra and knickers pouring in some bath oils and testing the water temperature.
‘Gods I love her.’ He thought as he began to remove his clothes.
She looked over her shoulder and smiled up at him. She stood and took his shirt and folded it up followed by his trousers.
He unclasped her bra and gently rubbed the red marks it left behind on her smooth skin.
She slowly moved his shorts down his legs and tossed them in the corner- her knickers slowly followed.
They settled into the warm bath together, not saying a word as they gently washed each other- removing the remnants of the old house.
When they crawled back into bed after drying off, Lucius pulled Hermione to him and tenderly brought her to pleasure and then entered her. Slowly he moved their bodies together, not once taking his eyes away from Hermione’s whiskey orbs.
They came together. It was not the tidal waves of pleasure they normally experienced with their more aggressive lovemaking, but more of a soothing wave of gratification.
They fell asleep- joined in everyway possible.
~~
The next day Severus arrived driving a black BMW 3 Series, which shocked Hermione - not just the car model but also the fact that Snape drove.
“You drive Professor?” she smiled as he walked closer seeming less intimdating without his billowing robes. He was still covered head to toe in black but the trousers and collared shirt just did not have the same effect as he teaching robes.
“I am half muggle Ms. Granger - and all men have their little guilty pleasures.” He said, raising one dark eyebrow in humor rather than his usual irritation.
“Come on, Lucius is at base working on a translation of the message he conjured yesterday.”
When they entered the tent Hermione noticed Angela give Snape a once over and then she had the audacity to wink at Hermione. Angela would find the brooding dark Potions Master attractive.
“Have you boys had any luck?”
“Somewhat but the last line is giving us some trouble. This book was a godsend though.” The translator said tapping the old tome almost affectionately.
“Shall I give it a look?” Severus asked as he and Lucius clasped hands in greeting.
“Please. The first two lines are ~Only those marked as mine may pass~ Here they will meet~ but the rest is gibberish.”
“Hmmm this looks familiar, it looks similar to an old binding spell used during the dark ages as a way to form allegiances during the kinfolk skirmishes of that age.”
“Are there any binding spells in the book?”
“Yes, toward the back.”
Severus spent a few minutes scanning the old text and putting together the pieces.
“If my translation is correct then the last line should read ~What binds them to me for all time~”
“~Only those marked as mine may pass
Here they will meet,
What binds them to me for all time~” Hermione spoke all together
“What does that mean exactly?” Angela asked
Lucius and Severus looked at each other, a sense of dread washing over them both.
They rolled up their sleeves to reveal their marks, once dormant, the tongues of the snakes now moved, pointing toward the house.
“That is why they never faded.” Lucius looked at Severus.
“They were not connected just to him- they had another source.” Severus looked at the house with a mixed look of wonder and horror.
“If we can destroy whatever it is in there, we may be rid of these forever.”
“Okay gentlemen, before we go in wands blazing we may want to figure out what we are going up against.” Hermione piped up.
“I am afraid it will only be Lucius and I entering the vaults, we are the only ones the house will admit.”
“But…” Hermione started.
“We will be fine, but first, as you said, we have to find out what we are going up against. That is your area of expertise my darling.”
~~
The rest of the day was spent pouring over the numerous books Hermione had brought with her.
Abruptly Hermione’s head popped up from the ancient text she had been digging through.
“Shapo” she half whispered.
“Have you found something?” Lucius asked.
“A Shapo. An evil entity conjured through the binding of residual evil energy. The spirit can cause deep irritation and burning in mortals when the conjurer invokes the power. If the one invoking the energy is powerful enough the burn can be manipulated into a mark to bind the mortal to the conjurer.” She read aloud.
“How do we kill it?” Severus asked.
“It does not say, but I am assuming we need to unbind the magic somehow.”
“It seems we have our work cut out for us old friend.” Lucius looked over at Sev.
“Indeed we do.”
