Once a Weasley, Always A Weasley
<><><><><>chapter 19<><><><><>
Hermione paced the length of the living area as she waited for her son to appear. Her eyes flashed and anyone who saw her would think Severus Snape possessed their Transfigurations mistress. It was far later than three in the afternoon and there was no sign of her son yet. He was probably still upset with her punishment of him, or had gotten into another spat with Lilah Malfoy. RJ was probably afraid to come home, if that were the case. She snapped around as her floo opened and Harry stepped out, a grim look on his face.
“This is not a good time, Harry. RJ is supposed to come directly home and he hasn’t shown up yet. He’s going to be scrubbing until the Christmas holiday if he doesn’t—“
“He’s at the Burrow, with Molly. You need to go now.”
Immediately, her anger changed to concern. “What’s wrong? Is my baby hurt?”
“Not physically, ‘Mione. He heard us talking last night. He knows about Adrianna, and he’s a little bit worried.”
“Oh, dear.” Hermione told him. He went back to the Burrow while she changed out of her teaching robes and hurried after him. She stepped out of the fireplace to find her mother-in-law holding her crying son close to her chest, rocking him like she used to when he was a baby. “RJ, baby, what’s wrong?”
“I’m not a Weasley!!!”
“Yes, you most certainly are!” Hermione and Molly said at almost the same time.
“Nuh-uh, I heard Uncle Harry and Mum last night.” He sniffled against his grandmother’s chest. Molly looked over his red head at her and cocked one eyebrow. Hermione sighed and sat on the chair opposite.
“RJ, you heard something you shouldn’t have, and misunderstood. You are Ronald Weasley Jr, don’t ever forget that. Your Grandmum and I have something to talk about; why don’t you go outside and fly for a little bit? Don’t go too high though.”
RJ pulled away from Molly, the lure of flying on his broom completely overwhelming his problem. He jumped up, hugged both women and ran out the back door.
“I’m sorry, Molly. You should have called me earlier.”
“It took a few hours to pry it out of the boy to begin with. Stuffing him helped. Food always opened Ron right up too.” She remembered her lost son fondly at the same age. “He said he woke up last night to hear you and Harry talking. He must have misheard you when you said he was someone else’s son.”
“Oh, my lord. I should have been more careful. Where is my mind going lately?” Hermione dropped her head into her hands and moaned. Molly smiled and sat up now that RJ was out of her lap.
“Concentrating on Adrianna’s biological father, is my guess.”
Hermione’s head snapped up to stare at her mother-in-law. “What?”
“Ron told me years ago, before you were married that he wasn’t the baby’s natural father. He told me to warn me, so that I wouldn’t treat Adrianna any different from the other grandchildren. And I never would. He loved her so much, Hermione. She and you were all he talked about when my sons and Ginny gathered here once a month. I’m her grandmother, no matter if Narcissa Malfoy is her biological one or not. Now she has two magical grandmums, by my reckoning.”
“Molly? How did you know..?”
“Ron told me you yelled out his name once in your sleep. She looks like that boy did at the same age, and acts like him most of the time. By what RJ has told me, Mr. Malfoy has discovered the truth?”
Hermione could only nod, unable to speak through her surprise. Ron had known all that time and never said a word to her. But he’d gone to his mother and told her everything.
“You have to tell Adrianna before you tell her little brother. But you need to tell him something. He’s scared he’s not a part of this family.”
“It’s so confusing, Molly. Draco and I are…we’re together, I guess that’s the best way of describing it. He wants to be a part of Adrianna’s and my life.” Hermione looked into Molly’s eyes. “I love Ron still, you know that, right?”
“Hermione, you’ve been grieving for him until a few days ago. Of course, you love Ron. You’re a member of this family no matter what happens with you and Draco Malfoy. Do you understand?”
Hermione’s eyes filled with tears, realizing again how lucky she was to have such a wonderful extended family. “I think I do, Molly. Thank you for being so understanding.”
“My son loved you, which means I love you. What happened before you were with him is your own business, no one else’s. So, how are things going with the new professor?”
“How come everyone is so interested in my love life?” Hermione laughed nervously.
“Because we’re family and we want to see you happy and alive again.” Molly grinned at the younger woman’s discomfort.
“Now I know how Ginny felt with six older brothers.”
Molly laughed and stood, pulling Hermione up into a hug. Hermione couldn’t believe it; Molly had known since before her marriage to her son, and she still loved Hermione and Adrianna. They were welcomed members of the Weasley clan, just as much as RJ was.
“She fought it though. You needed us, just as much as we need you, Hermione. Now get out there and talk to that hardheaded child. Just like his father, he is.”
“Yes, he is. Thank you so much, Molly. I really should punish him for skipping school, but considering the circumstances…”
“He was quite distraught once he got the whole thing out. The problem is, is that he didn’t hear everything that you and Harry said. He was half asleep.”
“At least he didn’t have any of the twins’ Extendable Ears.”
“He does, he just didn’t think to use them that late at night.”
Hermione hugged Molly again and started to leave the living room. When did her life get so complicated? ‘Oh, yes, when you decided to live in it again.’ She reminded herself sarcastically. But she wouldn’t go back to the way she was for anything.
RJ was sitting on the fence, holding his broom in his hands as he stared up at the sky. She wondered why he didn’t mount and fly, but he was probably waiting for her to show up and explain the situation to him. Watching him from afar she was reminded of his father the first time she met him. Wavy red hair, dirty faced, tall and lanky even then, she’d loved him, but hadn’t known it. Six years of dancing around each other, letting jealousy rouse them into anger until finally her pregnancy brought them together. If she hadn’t been pregnant for Adrianna would she have married Ron and had his son? Who knows, no one does. She was just thankful that she had loved and been loved by Ron so well, and now had something with the father of her firstborn.
“Hey, RJ, how’re you doing?”
“I’m sorry for not going to school. Grams told me you’d explain everything, but I don’t understand.”
“I know.” She brushed some of his hair out of his eye and made a mental note to cut his hair this coming weekend. “Some of it, I don’t understand, love. Tell me what you do know, or think you know and I can explain as best I can.”
RJ frowned at his mother for a moment then told her about the bits and pieces of what he’d heard and that he’d assumed she was talking about him not being Ron Weasley’s child.
Hermione took a deep breath and released it slowly. “You are very much the son of Ronald Weasley. You can be absolutely certain that you are a Weasley through and through. But, Adrianna…Sweetheart, your dad loved both you and Adrianna, but he didn’t help make Adrianna like he did with you. He was her daddy, and she’s a member of this family just as much as you are, but she had a different biological father. Do you remember what I told you about baby making?”
RJ flushed and recited that a man and woman made a baby in her tummy.
“Sometimes the man and woman aren’t the Mummy and Daddy for the baby though. You can’t tell your sister, RJ. I haven’t told her yet.”
“How come you’re telling her now, though?”
“Because things have changed lately. I’ll tell you more later, but right now that has to suffice for an explanation. Are you going to fly or do you want to head back to the castle and get your punishment started for yesterday’s scuffle with Miss Malfoy?”
He frowned, having hoped his mother would forget about the day before.
“I ‘pologized to her this morning.”
“We’ll renegotiate your punishment after you’ve actually served some of it. Do you understand what I said about your sister, though? She’s your sister, still. She always will be.”
“I know, Mum. I better go back. Mr. Filch is gonna need help cleaning the trophy room tonight.” As much as RJ grumbled, he still liked the old caretaker and actually helped him on occasion without the threat of punishment. Her son was a good boy, but still a boy.
“Dinner first. Professor Malfoy and I are going to have dinner sometime soon, with you, your sister and Lilah. Do you think you can behave that long?”
“Do I have to?”
“Yes.”
He sighed and nodded. He’d have to sit with two girls. They’d pick on him if he ate too fast or too much. Girls were different and weird. “Fine.”
“Apparate, or Floo?”
“Apparate! I have to put my broom away and say goodbye to Grams, first.” He rushed into the house, his long legs eating up the distance easily. Hermione waited by the fence for him, smiling. Maybe things would work out alright after all.
