Public Violence
“Lupin!” Snape bellowed as he stormed into the great hall, marching furiously between the student tables to the staff table. Lupin looked up from his paper and his eyes widened at the sight of Snape. Snape approached him and grabbed him by the scruff of his shirt, lifting him from his chair and pushing him against the wall. He did not care that every student and member of staff were now looking at him in silent shock. Snape could not articulate his fury, and instead simply punched Lupin, knocking him to the floor, his nose bloody. He sat up and looked up at Snape, anger burning in his eyes. He stood up and tried to punch Snape, but Snape, who could be surprisingly feline, ducked the punch and grabbed him by his throat, before smashing him into the table.
“May I read you something?” he asked furiously as he pressed Lupin’s head on the table, before proceeding to read quietly the letter that had been left by Malfoy. He could feel Lupin tense at the words.
“Professor Snape! Professor Lupin,” Dumbledore’s commanding voice filled the room and caused both professors to look up. His eyes were cold and without their usually twinkle as he looked at the two, “my office, now.” Snape growled and pushed Lupin to the floor before swooping out of the great hall, the room still silent.
Snape sat in Dumbledore’s office, glaring at Dumbledore as he sat silently looking at him and Lupin.
“Severus, you have disgraced yourself,” Dumbledore said eventually, his voice cold, “Unless you can provide a reason for this deplorable action, I will be forced to ask you to leave the school.” He looked at Snape, waiting for him response.
“Headmaster, this letter was sent to me,” he said, producing the letter from his pocket. The headmaster leant forwards and took the letter from his hand, before reading it silently.
“Professor Lupin, have you been working with Lucius Malfoy to orchestrate the kidnapping or Hermione Granger and the framing of Severus Snape?” Dumbledore asked, with equal coldness. Lupin opened his mouth and looked as though he was about to defend himself, but stopped.
“I have been manipulated by Lucius Malfoy,” he sighed, his voice ripe with defeat, “Lucius Malfoy said that I would be able to get revenge on Snape for stealing Hermione from me.” Snape sneered as he said the words, but a reprimanding glare from Dumbledore led to him looking away.
“Carry on Professor Lupin.” Dumbledore said coldly.
“He said that he would kidnap Hermione and make it look like it was Severus by drugging her with potions stolen from his stores. He would then send a message to him, telling him where to find her, but it would be a false address. Severus would go to that place and Lucius would stun him. I would then save Hermione.” Lupin held his head in his hands, “I’m sorry Headmaster.” The headmaster’s glare did not soften.
“You shall go to Azkaban for this Lupin,” Dumbledore said, “though your sentence will be reduced because you have confessed and I assume are prepared to help.” Lupin nodded furiously.
“I’ll do anything.” He said, his voice full of sadness.
“I know you will,” Dumbledore said, his voice still as harsh as it had been. He turned slightly to address Snape.
“You shall not be asked to leave this school Severus,” Dumbledore told him, “however, you shall be making a public apology, regardless of whether you mean it. As for Hermione, I shall contact aurors and send them Malfoy Manor to retrieve her.”
“You can’t do that Headmaster,” Snape said, “he will kill her if we do that. I have to go, and I have to take that.” He glared at Lupin. Dumbledore glanced at him over his half-moon spectacles. He looked from Lupin to Snape.
“Is she in danger Lupin?” Dumbledore asked. Lupin sighed and nodded.
“I think so,” he sighs, “I asked Lucius….” He paused, and Snape turned sharply at him.
“What?” he yelled before he could stop himself. He stood up and grabbed Lupin by his collar, “what did you tell Lucius?” Lupin gulped and looked at Dumbledore for help, but Dumbledore just looked at him and Snape.
“I believe Severus asked you a question Professor Lupin,” Dumbledore said coldly.
“I told him that he was just not to kill her,” he said softly, “but that he could do anything apart from that.” Snape growled and punched him again, knocking him to he floor. Lupin held his nose and looked up at Snape with fear in his eyes.
“Azkaban is too good for you,” Snape said coldly, wiping the blood from his fist.
“They are my sentiments right now Severus,” Dumbledore said, anger flaring in his eyes, “I suggest however, that we focus of rescuing Miss. Granger. I agree that you must go to the manor, however, I shall be sending aurors to act as back up.” Snape nodded and stood up, checking his pocket for his wand.
“We shall use floo,” Severus said, bending down to grab Lupin by his collar and throwing him into the fireplace.
“Bring her back Severus,” Dumbledore said softly, his eyes soft and cheerless. Severus nodded sadly before getting into the fireplace, accidently kicking Lupin as he did.
