Chapter 19 – In the linen store

Hermione could feel her heart thundering in her chest as the heavy cupboard door slammed behind them leaving her in complete darkness with the stranger, stifled by the gloved hand covering her mouth. She squirmed beneath the body pressing her against the wall, feeling his feet either side of hers, his legs and torso pressing forcefully against her own and his cheek up against hers as he spoke furtively into her ear.

“Keep still and listen…” it was hissed between clenched teeth but the voice was unmistakable. She relaxed from her squirms and felt his hand slip away from her mouth.

“Luci…”
But before she could even finish his name, his lips were on hers, his tongue darting, instantly, into the open mouth. He was pressing so hard against her mouth she could feel the concrete wall hurting the back of her head and she struggled and moaned for him to stop.
He pulled away – his hand reaching into her robes for her wand, which he found and threw down onto the floor, it rolled under the bottom shelf of sheets and pillows and came to rest in the dust and cobwebs.

His hand went immediately back to her mouth and she cried out.
“nnnnnnnnnn…” Was the only sound to escape the lips forced closed and she renewed her struggles.
“Don’t make me put you in a body bind!” His voice was louder and more commanding and her struggles subsided once more, though she could feel that he was obviously enjoying her struggling as his groin swelled at her hip.
“I had to talk to you – away from everyone! If I let you go will you just talk to me?”
Hermione nodded her head slowly and his hand withdrew from her mouth. At the same time he loosened his grip on her wrists, but his body stayed firmly pressed up against her.

“What are you doing here, Lucius?”

“Waiting for you – you come every day.”

“You’re here every day?”

“Of course.”

“I’ve never seen you.”

“Of course not!”

“But why…why do you come?”

“I needed to see you, to tell you that I miss you and that I had nothing to do with Harry’s accident.”

“That’s bullshit – I know what happened…”

“No, you don’t – you know what Severus told you…”

“How the hell do you know about what Severus told me?”

“I was there – I heard…the ward witch is…shall we say…an old acquaintance. She lets me come and go – I ask her to make sure the curtains are always closed round Harry’s bed and the one next to it. I regularly visit the old wizard in the next bed.”

“But Severus saw you in Harry’s mind…”

“Is that what he said?”

“Yes…no…I don’t know. He thought it was you.”

“Hermione, legilimency is an inexact art – even if you see accurately, things can be twisted by the subject’s own mind – even then you have to interpret what you see. I don’t know what Severus saw but it wasn’t me.”

Hermione’s silence told him she wasn’t convinced.

“You believe me don’t you?”

“No, Lucius – I don’t.”

“But you do love me?”

“I…what makes you say that?”

“I heard you talking to Harry. You can’t decide between Severus and me. But I know you want me – you used the oil – and you did enjoy it!” His tone was mocking now and Hermione became restless and angry.

“Tell me about the oil? What does it do?”

“As if you didn’t know! But the oil is irrelevant, I know how you feel about me. I heard the things you said.”

“Well you can be damn sure I wouldn’t have said them if I’d known you were listening. Besides don’t think you’ve ever got a chance with me if it turns out that it was you that hurt Harry.”

“It wasn’t…”

“Easy words to say, Lucius.”

“I’m close to finding the truth…”

“Yes, so are we!”

“We. So it’s you and Severus now is it? Hermione, please…”

He gripped both of her shoulders in his hands and forced his mouth down onto hers again. Stunned, she didn’t know what to do – how to react. She was angry with him and suspicious of him but what if he was telling the truth? Desire bubbled up inside her and she felt herself give in to the kiss. It felt so good, their tongues intertwining like fighting snakes. Her hands reached up and held him tightly as she struggled to breathe and keep kissing, furtively, passionately. She felt his body relax and her brain intervened, seeing a chance of escape. She broke off the kiss, pushing him backwards.

“I love Severus!”

“You love me!” His voice was angry and he advanced on her again.

“No!”

In the darkness, she did not see the gloved hand as it pulled back, before slapping her across the cheek. She cried out in surprise then slumped to the floor, crying.

This time his footsteps were not silent as he strode to the door and opened it. Hermione looked up through flooded eyes to see the blinding light of the corridor pour in. From her lowly vantage point the silhouette of Lucius Malfoy was imposing as he cast her a final sneer.

“We’ll see about that!” Was all he said, then the door slammed behind him and she heard the booted footsteps recede towards the staircase.

Blindly, she felt around in the grime and dust on the floor until she found her wand. Without even daring to venture out into the corridor again, she clutched her wand and apparated back to Hogwarts.
