By the end of the week the gossip about Weasley's expulsion was old news. The school had moved on and so had Harry. What I mean by that is that my boy got accustomed to his surroundings (i.e. his suite) therefor it was no longer necessary for me to sleep with Harry in his rooms. I was proud of him because of course I don't want any other students to know about his weakness and take advantage of it (especially the Slytherins). However, I was mostly just a bit sad. I miss my boy dearly. Its not that I didn't see him in classes and the Great Hall, its just that I missed our nights together. I missed holding him. I missed the coconut scented soap he uses on his body; the smell that I couldn't forget. I toss and turn in my sleep thinking about it and in the daytime during classes it is all I can do not to snatch him up so that we can runaway and just be together. These were the thoughts plaguing my mind throughout the first month of schooling and well into the next. Indeed if it wasn't for the upcoming Halloween Ball then I might have remained in my own little world of brooding.
"So what are we going to be for the Halloween Ball?"
"Pardon?" I ask halfheartedly as I flip through the Arithmetic book at a desk in Hogwarts' library.
"You know what, Draco, everyone is getting tired of this little funk of yours."
"Excuse me?" I say as I raise my eyes from the book I was reading, now giving Pansy my full attention. I am shocked that she would dare speak to me in such a manner.
"Well I see that I finally have your attention, Draco."
"Pansy you only called my name once, besides it's not as if I'm a legilimence."
"Firstly it's illegal to read other people's thoughts withouttheir permission."
"So what, are you a do-good Gryffindor now? Slytherins don't care if something is ille--"
"And secondly, I have called your name more than one time. In actuality I have been asking you about Halloween for more than three minutes."
"Well be that as it may you have my attention now. Ask me whatever you will."
"Draco, where is Harry?"
I slam the book in front of me closed, jerking up out of my chair, facing Pansy. "Harry isn't my pet, Pansy. He doesn't need to follow me and be around me 24/7."
"But that's what you want, isn't it, Draco?"
"Pansy I thought we were talking about Halloween not Harry."
"They're related."
"Oh?" I ask, wanting this conversation to be over as soon as possibleso that I can retrieve Harry from that Hufflepuff Longbottom boy. I suppose I would rather have Harry hang out with a pureblood Hufflepuff than any of those Gryffindor mudbloods. But what I would rather have is Harry hanging out with me. I want him to be with me as much as I want to be with him. Merlin, but this is frustrating.
"Would you rather go with me or Harry to the Halloween Ball?"
"Pansy, how is this even up for discussion. Of course I'll be going with you. We are engaged, after all."
"Draco, no one knows of our engagment except a select few. Besides, it's not even official until our fourteenth birthday. If you would prefer to take Harry to the Halloween Ball instead of me then just tell me!"
"Pansy," I say, raising my voice slightly as I make furtive glances around the library making sure that her raised voice didn't attract any observers. "It is not a question of what I want to do it's a question of what I will do. And taking you to the Halloween Ball is what I will be doing. Now, Pansy, what is it that you wish to be for Halloween? I don't have a preference so you can pick themes, colors, and whatnot. I'm all open."
"You are just so...ugh," Pansy groans before turning and storming out of the library.
I let out a deep breath, rubbing a hand over my face before turning back to my Arithmatic book.
"She wants you to want to take her."
"What!" I screech out, slamming my book close. Again. When I turn towards the voice Blaise walks out from behind a bookcase. "How long were you there?"
"Long enough to see Pansy run off."
"Well, I don't know why she ran off in the first place. I agreed to go to the Halloween Ball with her as she asked and is as expected."
Blaise sighs before taking a seat in the chair across from mine, causing me to return to my recently evacuated seat. I eye him over the table. "Draco, Pansy just wants you to care about her in the same way in which you care about Harry."
I let out a harsh laugh before stopping abruptly. "Blaise, that is impossible."
"Why, because you like boys?"
"Blaise, I'm only eleven, it's not a matter of liking boys or girls. Besides, even if I did like boys, It's wouldn't be because of that. It's because I like Harry. I assure you that if Harry were a girl I would like him just the same."
"So, this isn't about liking boys over girls?"
"No it's not. It's about Harry. It's about liking Harry. It's about me! I chose Harry, I didn't choose Pansy--my parents chose her."
"So that's what this is about, huh?"
"Oh there you are, Draco!" Harry exclaims as he rounds a bookshelf. I am extremely glad of his timely arrival which thankfully stops the uncomfortable conversation between Blaise and I. "I was looking all over for you! I went to yours and Blaise suite but no one was there! Lucky for me I ran into Pansy and she said you were in the library. And here you are!"
"Yes, here I am," I say, smirking at Harry before I reach out and grab my boy, pulling him down so that he tumbles onto my lap. Harry laughs at me before turning to face me in the chair.
"Tsk tsk, Draco. I didn't come here to play with you, I came here to ask you if I can borrow your Herbology book. You have the year two book on Herbology and all the extra ones have all ready been checked out. Neville and I want to see if we can plant Fanged Geraniums and Abyssinian Shrivelfig in close proximity."
"Well, you could always ask Professor Sprout."
"Yes but with Halloween right around the corner all of the Professors have been extra busy."
"Yes, that is true. All right, I guess I'll have to let you borrow my book." I say this with an exaggerated sigh and Harry lets out another laugh because he knows that my reluctant agreement is just for show. "Well we might as well go now," I say, getting up from my chair and bringing Harry with me.
"Haha, I knew you would let us borrow your book. See, nothing to fear, Neville."
I jerk around and there hiding partly behind a bookshelf is Neville Longbottom. I turn back to Harry. "When you said you wanted to borrow a book for you and Longbottom I didn't know that he was here with you."
"Ya we just got done clearing out that old greenhouse. Professor Sprout gave us permission to use it so we wanna get started plantin--"
"Harry, why are you doing this anyway?"
"Well at home I always take care of the garden. I love growing and grooming plants it helps me relax, think, and process stuff. Besides, I know how much you love potions so I was gonna grow you some ingredients just in case you run out because of all those extra potions you're always making."
"First off I'm not always making extra potions I'm just getting in some practice. Besides, if I run out, I can just buy potion ingredients through owl order like you and I did when we ordered you some robes."
"Yes, well that is true but I really want to make this garden with Neville. He's really good at growing plants and stuff and Professor Sprout said that if we're successful then we can get extra credit in her class! She even mentioned an internship! Can you believe it (though it definitely won't be for a few more years). Besides you're always looking out for me Draco, I want to look out for you. Do something for you and 'cause you never know when you'll need a few ingredients for a potion that can't wait for owl post."
"Yes, I suppose you're right," I say to Harry, leading him out of the library after a wave of goodbye to Blaise. Longbottom is trailing nervously behind us and I rue the day that him and Harry met. I don't want Harry spending his time with Longbottom, I want him to spend his time with me. I drag a hand over my face. "Ugh," I groan out, annoyed that Longbottom is exceptionally good at Herbology, the subject that Harry loves above all else (even Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts). It also doesn't help that they have the class together.
"Draco, what is it?" Harry asks me softly as we make our way to my suite. I take my hand in his, pulling him closer to me.
"Nothings wrong Harry, I was just thinking about what Pansy and I are going to go to the Halloween Ball as."
"Oh!" exclaims Harry excitedly. We have just made it to my suite and I whisper out the password, bidding entrance to Harry and, reluctantly, Longbottom (what kind of host would I be if I left him out on the threshold?). When Harry steps into my suite he makes himself at home on my sofa and Neville follows reluctantly.
"So, you haven't decided what you are gonna wear to the Halloween Ball?" Harry asks me as I retrieve the second year Herbology book off of my bookshelf.
"No," I sigh, giving the book to Harry. Harry takes the book from me, placing it in his book bag. Harry then grabs the end of my robe, pulling me down on the couch next to him. "The whole decision is for Pansy to decide, I don't particularly care what costume it is."
"Well, you know as the full moon approaches (and also because of Halloween), we have been learning about were-creatures in Care of Magical Creatures. Last week we learned about werecats and the method of taming them is to give them nepeta cataria--catnip. So with me and Neville planning to plant some nepeta cataria and all, I got the idea to go as a werecat and Neville decided to go as catnip. Isn't that just clever, Draco?"
"Wha--what! You are going to the Halloween Ball with Longbottom!?" My heart is beating a mile a minute and I can hardly believe that my boy is slipping through my fingers.
"Well, we are all going to the Halloween Ball together. It's just, yours and Pansy's costumes are gonna match so I wanted mine to match someones and, besides you, Neville is my closets friend."
"So that's where you've been these past few weeks, with Neville. Is he the reason you don't need me to sleep with you anymore? Have I been replaced?" I snarl as I jerk up from my seat.
Harry's eyebrows furrow and he appears confused. "Draco, no one has replaced you. I've missed you terribly. It's just been a hectic few weeks with my extra credit project for Professor Sprout. Besides, you have been equally busy helping Professor Snape around the lab. I hear that you're up for internship as well. Hopefully once Halloween is over we can settle back into the schedule we are accustomed to."
"Yes, perhaps you're right," I bitterly whisper to myself. Though what Harry says may be true that doesn't disregard the fact that him and Longbottom seem to be exceptionally close friends. Perhaps closer than Harry and I. That is what has me the most angry and frustrated. Perhaps I should get the boy expelled like I did Weasley. But then Harry would be hurt and I don't want to hurt my boy. Besides he might figure out it was I who planted the trap and never speak with me again. I very well can't have that.
"I haven't only missed you after classes," Harry says softly, drawing my attention away from my thoughts. "I've missed you at night when I should be sleeping."
I smile at Harry, all of my anxiety over the past few weeks completely evaporating. Harry might be friends with Longbottom but he was friends with me first. No matter how hectic school life gets Harry will always be my boy. His brand makes sure of that. And though he may be close to Longbottom because of their shared passion for Herbology, it is not Longbottom my boy longs for in the middle of the night, but me. He longs for me, and that is proof enough that he belongs to me--not Neville. Not anyone. Just me. Mine. My Harry, my boy.
