Another Way

Chapter Eighteen: Another Way

Hermione was up at the crack of dawn, as usual, ready to get to the Riddle house and solve this mystery. She attempted to roll out from beneath the heavy arm that held her to the soft bed, but Lucius was having none of it. Half asleep he pulled her deeper into his warm body and wrapped a leg around her.

“Lucius, love, you need to let me up.” She smiled as she laced their fingers together and tried to pull his arm up.

“No,” he mumbled kissing her neck and nipping at her earlobe.

“Come on darling, I have to get ready.” She whined, wiggling.

“We have two hours before the team is expecting us and it is barely a twenty minute drive from here, what is your rush?” His lips moved down her exposed shoulder and slipped the thin strap of her nightgown down.

“What must I do to be set free?” she asked arching her back as he hand traveled up to cup her breast.

“I can think of a reasonable payment,” his husky voice answered as he rolled his hips- giving her a good feel of his hard length.

Two hours later the pair pulled up in front of an old stone two story house about two miles off the main road. The air seemed to pulse and become thick as they stepped out to greet the team leader Angela Knowles.

Angela was a veteran site leader who had recently finished working on a site in Capocastello Italy. She had studied an elemental being that had been conjured during the 18th century. The creature had been lurking in the catacombs of the ancient village, tormenting the citizens- wizard and muggle- for generations.

Hermione had worked with Angela in Peru, but it had been a few years since they had seen each other.

“Angela, how are you?” Hermione greeted her old friend with a warm hug.

“Sure glad you’re here.” Angela replied, she might be short in stature but what she lacked in height she made up for in presence and intelligence. To see the worry and relief in her friend’s eyes made Hermione wonder just what was prowling around the old house.

She noticed Angela’s eyes travel behind her shoulder to where Lucius stood.

“This is my partner Lucius, he is here as an experts on dark artifacts.” Hermione explained. When Lucius placed his large pale hand on Hermione’s shoulder Angela understood the double meaning of “partner.”

“Welcome Lucius,” she smiled knowingly. “If you two want to follow me to base I will fill you in and then take you down to the vaults.”

As Lucius followed the women toward the house he felt a sudden prickling in his left forearm. He rubbed his hand over the sensation as he listened to Hermione and Angela talk.

“So three weeks to make it into the main house, and no luck at all with the vaults.”

“That’s right,” responded Angela, annoyance obvious in her tone. “I am telling you, it is the strangest thing, it is as if this is some kind of shield over the place that we can not recognize and our magic is useless against it.”

“I have a feeling we are missing one very important element.” Hermione mused.

“Lets hope having two new sets of eyes on the site will help us find it.”

As they entered the front door Lucius felt a current run through his entire body. He felt his magic crackling inside of him and an eerie familiar feeling engulfed him.

He stopped mid stride, he could have sworn he heard a hissing noise coming from the walls.

“Has anyone reported any strange feelings or hearing strange noises on the premises?” he asked- senses on heightened alert.

“Beside the general heeby-geebies you get from entering a house you know is evil- nope.” Angela responded.

“Really, interesting. What have you discovered about the past residence of the house?” Hermione asked- giving Lucius an odd look.

Was he feeling something? She wondered

“There is local folklore about the family. Seems they were known for their cruelty to servants and their loyalty was never certain in times of crisis here in the borders. Lots of mysterious deaths and cold-blooded murders on these grounds have been reported and not only within the Riddle family. In the 1950’s it was said three young girls were found with their throats slit about 100 yards behind the main house.” Angela explained as they made their way down in to the dark cellar.

The air inside the dark chambers was enough to choke a person. It reeked of age, decay and something unearthly.

Yet Lucius has this strange inkling that this was not how you got to the vaults, though by the structure of the room they were obviously behind the walls.

“So here they are.” Angela pointed to the long wall lined with heavy limestone blocks.

“And magic does nothing to the stone at all?” Hermione asked going forward to touch the stone but her hand stopped about a foot away, as if she were pushing on a wall.

“What?”

“See what I mean, and spells do nothing but bounce back. Jerry was in hospital a week after a spell ricocheted off and got him in the chest.”

“Have you searched for another possible entrance to the vaults?”

“We have tried digging down and moving in from the outside in but the limestone stopped us again, we have also tried straight down from upstairs and still nothing.”

“Well there must be a way in.” Hermione thought out loud.

Lucius suddenly looked up and cocked his head to the right.

“What are you thinking Lucius?” Hermione asked

“I have a sudden urge to go upstairs- into the attic.” He sounded confused, but determined.

“What has your team found up there?” He asked Angela

“Some old family heirlooms but nothing of consequence.”

“Well, we have nothing to lose then- let’s give it a go.” Hermione let Angela lead the way out of the cellar and took her lover’s hand as they ascended the old stairs.

“What is going on? You are acting rather peculiar.”

“I do not know, except that whatever is here is directly connected to the former Dark Lord and somehow to me as well.”

Her eyebrow rose in shock but he hushed her before she could say anything.

“Promise me that you will be very careful while we are in this house.”

“Of course love.”

Lucius spent a good twenty minuets just roaming around the attic of the Riddle house. He touched an old chair, thumbed through a few old books, even opened an old hope chest, yet nothing came of it.

Then suddenly he looked up as if he heard something and made a bee line for the sidewall of the attic.

The two women could do little but watch and wait.

He took the snakehead of his cane and lightly began tapping on the ancient paneling and once a distinctly hollowed sound echoed back he dropped the cane and placed both hands on the panel.

In the silence both women were shocked when Lucius spoke one word in a clear strong voice.

“Morsmordre”

To everyone’s surprise the paneling began to emit a dark greenish light and words- in a deep jagged script began to form.

“What does it mean Lucius?” Hermione asked once she found her voice again.

He turned around at the sound of her voice. He was shaking and his eyes held a desperate sadness that broke Hermione’s heart to see.

“I don’t know, and part of me never wants to.”
