Chapter XVIII
Sorry for the time between updates. It has been an unconscionably long time. In my defense, I have been having issues with medications. Due to that and not having internet for the week of Christmas, stories have been neglected. I will reply to y'all nex' chapter.

Hermione sat doubled over in Hogwarts’ infirmary waiting for Madam Pomfrey to come and see her. Her stomach ached. Her head throbbed. She couldn’t stand it. What was wrong with her? She had a letter from Ron open on her lap. A moving picture from the front of the Daily Prophet had been enclosed with the article attached announcing their engagement.
She had finished her N.E.W.T.s early that afternoon just before the start of Christmas break. She would start at the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures on January 3 the following year.
Hermione twisted the wedding band around on her finger and breathed in and out harder.
“What can I do for you Miss Granger?”
“It’s just the same symptoms,” Hermione said, rocking back and forth.
“Well, I gave you the potions. If they didn’t help, you aren’t sick. Is something else troubling you?” the mediwitch asked, watching the girl nervously twirl the wedding band around up and down her finger.
“I just feel sick,” Hermione said, shoving the letter to the floor as she shifted to lie down on the bench.
Madam Pomfrey bent and picked up the cast away letter.
“How long have you and Mr. Weasley been affianced to each other?”
“About a week.”
“And this morning is the first announcement in the papers?” Madam Pomfrey asked, setting the letter and the newspaper article next to her.
“Yes,” Hermione said in a breathy voice. Why did she feel this way?
“Miss Granger, will you take off the band that you have been fiddling with please?”
Hermione ripped the band off and dropped it on the floor. She sighed. She sat up.
“Are you feeling alright?”
“I feel better,” Hermione responded, though she held her arms crossed.
“I think that you were having a panic attack,” the mediwitch said, patting her arm. “I think you aren’t ready to be married, and your body is trying to tell you. Mr. Weasley is talking of plans for this March. That is quite quick. Don’t you think so?”
“I guess,” Hermione replied, trembling a little.
“Talk to Mr. Weasley and explain your feelings. If he loves you as he says, then he will wait.”
Hermione nodded. She reached up and stroked the locket. Her symptoms lessened even more, and she stood up. She frowned as she realized she hadn’t even opened it.

“The question is how to do it,” Lucius said. “I don’t want to be with any other woman. The very thought makes me want to vomit.”
“Well, you could just make her think that you don’t like her,” Draco suggested. “Just be cold to her as she is being to you.”
“I don’t think I could kiss another woman and not be sick.”
“Do you think the spell?”
“Typically, the spell was consummated and the people married within twenty-four hours. However, it also appears that the two people involved within the curse were noticeably in love. I don’t think any one would suppose my feelings for Miss Granger to be love.”
“I certainly wouldn’t have known. And I know only one person who knows you as well as I, and that is Uncle Severus.”
“Yes, he knows and always has that I am in love with her. I couldn’t hide it in school. Followed her around like a little niffler. Your mother followed me around as I followed Miss Granger.”
“Maybe you should just tell her,” Draco said. “Like Uncle Severus suggested.”
“That won’t do,” Lucius said, shaking his head. “I won’t be played by her nimble fingers. I should be the musician not the instrument.”
“Miss Granger is a bit of a control freak, just like you. She might not appreciate being manipulated.”
“The art of manipulation, Draco, is being sure that the swindled party doesn’t know that they have been played.”
“How will you do this?”
“I’m going to make it up as I go. Better to be that way, than to have a carefully managed plan. You have to think on your feet. I’ll show you how to get any female,” Lucius said, reaching over and opening the nightstand drawer. He reached in and took out the photograph.
He stared at it and smiled sadly.
“Yes Father,” Draco responded.

Hermione sat in her room. She had the whole room to herself. While she was at the school, it was decided that she would be headgirl. She twisted the heart pendant back and forth. Her fingers found the clasp and she opened it.
A handsome male voice floated to her accompanied by the most beautiful piano as a stream of white light burst forth from the necklace to float up glowing before her face. She had to close her eyes for a moment against the brightness as it glowed as the first rays of sun coming over the horizon.
When Hermione opened her eyes, she saw a spherical image floating. It was Lucius, seventeen year old Lucius, holding her skirt and crying. Within an instant the image was replaced by one of him being held up by her magic as she took him to the castle. A few moments later the image was replaced by the two of them snuggled together. A few moments later came one of Hermione and he walking through the Forest of Dean searching for the lake in the center. The images whirled and repeated.
She cried as the words of the song floated around her.
Poor Lucius.
She took out a piece of parchment and began a letter to Ron. She had to talk to him.

I hope y'all can forgive me for taking so long, and I hope that you will review. I am having worsening issues with my left hand. It is so darned icky. I will try to get another pdate out by Friday. But I am also in the midst of transferring to another university, so it is all complicated in my world. I have not and will not abandon this fic or the other one! I already have an idea for my next fic!
