CH: 18 - THE WARNING
The club was slowly coming to life, like waking from a deep sleep and shaking off the blankets, people began filtering in, the music got louder, and still Draco searched the crowd for anyone he knew, any sign of trouble.
Draco was beginning to get frustrated when he spotted them, Potter and Weasley. They had just come into the club and Draco was thoroughly surprised. They were actually dressed quite well, for them of course. Potter had on a dark blue suit, very similar to Draco’s black one, with a pinstriped white shirt and the top two buttons of his shirt undone, like Draco’s shirt. Weasley had a dark brown suit on with a snug tan pullover sweater, the color tamed his ridiculously red hair and actually, Draco grudgingly acknowledged, made him look reasonably presentable. ‘Humph, who would have thought they look decent in muggle clothes?’ he mused.
Draco waited quite a while before approaching, looking carefully around, searching for any sign anyone was following them…’This doesn’t feel right’ he thought warily.
But, finally after closely observing the surroundings he felt safe enough to approach.
Draco downed the last of his drink, steeled his shoulders and got ready for battle.
--------------
Harry and Ron had drinks in hand and were quietly chuckling about something when Draco came up beside Harry. Harry had his back to him.
Draco was dreading this, he knew Potter would not believe him at first, he just hoped he could convince him he was sincere before it was too late, too late for them both. Draco knew this move was at great personal risk to him, but he also knew the battle lines had been drawn and he had to pick a side, he could no longer sit on the fence.
Tonight Draco would let his true allegiance be known…
“Hello, Potter.” Draco drawled lazily.
Draco watched as Harry’s shoulders tensed instantly and turned slowly to face him.
“Malfoy..” Harry groaned. “What the hell are you doing here?!”
Draco rolled his eyes, “Nice to see you too, Draco. How’s your summer been so far?” he sneered.
Ron looked past Harry and instantly became alert, both Harry and Ron were casting quick glances around the club now.
“I’m alone, Potter.” Draco sighed, ‘Already trouble.’ he thought.
“What the bloody hell do you want, Malfoy?!” Ron growled, his face reddening with anger.
Draco’s eyes iced over as he considered Ron. “Language, Weasel…I need to talk to you, Potter.” Draco said quietly, “Alone.”
“Get lost, Malfoy.” Harry spat and turned back to Ron.
“Potter..” Draco said to his back, “This is important. Would I be talking to you otherwise?”
“I don’t give a damn what you have to say, Malfoy.” Harry sneered.
“Yes, yes you do, Potter.” Draco said, his tone deathly calm.
Ron’s eyes searched Harry’s and Harry shrugged and turned back to Draco.
“Out with it then, Malfoy...” Harry’s voice was curt.
“Alone, Potter.”
“No way am I going anywhere with you alone.” Harry snapped. “Anything you have to say, you can say in front of Ron too.”
Draco sighed. This he already knew, but he had a better chance of getting through to Harry without the Weasel around. “Harry,” Draco began, “I came to warn you.” Draco’s eyes searched the crowd again, finally coming back to Harry, serious and alert.
“Warn me about what?” Harry was startled to hear Draco use his first name.
“There’s an attack planned against you tonight…Death Eaters, I don’t know how many, but they will probably be waiting for you when you get back to Weasel’s tonight.” There! Draco had said it. He searched Harry’s eyes for any sign he believed him. His wait wasn’t long.
Harry laughed, a deep, rumbly laugh and looked at Draco, then back to Ron. “You’ve got to be kidding, right? Like I’d believe anything you have to say, Malfoy!” Here Harry’s eyes narrowed, “How do you know I’m staying at Ron’s?”
Draco rolled his eyes, ”Where else would you be?” He sighed he knew this was coming. “Potter, why would I warn you if there wasn’t really a threat to you? What gain do I have by letting you know an attack is planned?”
Harry rolled his eyes and looked at Ron.
Ron was shaking his head, “Bloody unbelievable.”
Draco’s face was calm, but he was clenching and unclenching his jaw muscle trying to control his temper. ‘Steady, Malfoy’ he told himself.
“Potter, look…” Draco began.
“You’ve had your little laugh, Malfoy, now beat it.” Harry turned back round without another glance.
Draco seethed, “Goddamn it, Potter! This is important!” He spun Harry around to face him again and Ron bolted up off his stool.
Harry snaked his arm out to stop Ron. “Steady, mate, not here...” he said calmly, casting eyes around. Harry’s eyes were snapping now, fire burning within.
‘Good!’ Draco thought. Harry was always at his best when he was mad. He thought clearly when he was under pressure. “Listen to me, Potter.” Draco continued, “This is no fucking joke. They don’t mean to take you hostage….they mean to kill you! Do you get it, Potter?....KILL YOU TONIGHT!” Draco’s voice was low, urgent.
Harry replied calmly, “Malfoy, they always mean to kill me, fortunately they haven’t been successful so far.”
Draco blinked and looked at Ron now. “Weasley, tell him I’m fucking serious!”
“I think you’re a lying bastard!” Ron snapped. “What kind of sick joke is this you’re playing at, Malfoy?”
“Maybe Voldemort doesn’t want me to go out dancing tonight. He may be afraid I’ll meet some pretty girl, do a little snogging about…” Harry laughed.
Draco looked taken aback. All the color drained out of his face. He looked at Harry then Ron. “You fucking, thick headed idiot. I’m trying to save your sorry arse and you’re making jokes!” Draco looked at them flabbergasted. He opened his mouth to speak, but something caught his eye and his head snapped left, looking into the crowd.
Harry and Ron looked too. Finally, he turned back to Harry and shook his head. “This is so goddamned stupid for me to be talking to you like this, out in the open”….big sigh…”Look, I’ll be here all night, in case things get dicey.”
Harry and Ron laughed. “Don’t do me any favors, Malfoy.” Harry said. But he was starting to get a little worried by the look on Draco’s face. Plus, Draco never swore, he was always proper…seeing him so frazzled made him worry.
“It’s no joke, Potter. If they see me talking to you tonight, I’m dead by morning.” Draco’s voice was hushed.
“Daddy dear won’t let anything happen to his pride and joy.” Harry scoffed.
It was Harry’s turn to be taken aback…Draco threw his head back and laughed. “Potter, you moron, you don’t know anything do you? My father would kill me off for so much as a galleon, if it suited his needs…Haven’t you learned anything from dealing with him all these years?”
Harry and Ron were silent.
“But, your father loves you.” Harry said incredulously.
Draco’s face showed no emotion, but his eyes changed color to a steel blue, “My father loves no one but himself. He has allegiance to the party he believes will come out on top, so he can succeed. He feels greed, hunger for power…but never love.”
Ron looked ashen, “What game are you playing at, Malfoy?” he croaked.
“THIS IS NO GAME!” Draco yelled, then, realizing what he’d done, looked around again. “The Dark Lord is starting his plan in motion, Potter and it begins tonight.”
Ron looked at Harry, “He’s gone completely mental.”
Harry nodded, “Completely.”
“ARGH!!” Draco yelled, “Bloody, stupid Gryffindors!” Shaking his head slowly, he looked Harry dead in the eyes, “What can I say to get you to believe me?” Draco’s voice had changed it was quiet, almost desperate sounding.
“Why?” Harry said.
“Because I also want to be in allegiance with the side I think is going to win…Has to win, and they can only do that if your sorry ass is alive. They need you in order to succeed.”
Ron and Harry looked at each other.
Harry sighed. “How do I know this isn’t some set up and you’re not here to lure us into a trap?”
Harry looked at Ron. Ron whispered angrily, “Harry! He’s lying, he always lies.”
“I’ve never lied to you, Potter.” Harry and Ron’s jaws dropped. Draco rolled his eyes, “Look, I may have not told you things I knew, because, well, I’m a prick.” he said shrugging, “But, I have never lied to you….I don’t lie.”
“Why now?” Harry said more to himself than anyone.
“I told you, Potter,” Draco said exasperated, “The Dark Lord is starting his plan now…”
“What’s his plan?”
“FOR MERLIN’S SAKE, MAN, HAVE YOU NOT HEARD ONE WORD I’VE SAID…TO KILL YOU!”
At this, a girl next to them grabbed her girlfriend and moved to the far side of the bar, casting nervous glances back at the three boys as they hurried away.
Draco, Harry knew, always held his composure, unless he was scared senseless. He watched now, with narrowed eyes as Draco raked a hand through his perfectly styled hair and whispered, “Shit.”
Harry was starting to worry.
“Malfoy, relax.” Harry said calmly, “No one’s dying tonight.”
Draco looked anxious now, “Potter, my father trusts me, but only so far. There may be more to tonight than I am privy too.”
Harry sighed, “What are you drinking, Malfoy?”
“Harry! You can’t be taking him seriously??? This, this Slytherin??? Harry…it’s MALFOY, the person who has single handedly made all our years at school as miserable as he possibly could…HARRY!” Ron’s face was angry and distrustful.
“Ron, why’s he here?”
“It’s a trick, or some bloody fool joke…”Ron argued.
“Vodka, neat.” Draco said.
Harry turned to the bartender, “Vodka neat, three.”
The bartender returned and Draco took his without a word, downed it whole, nodded to the bartender, holding his glass up and another one was set down in front of him.
Now Harry was worried. “What’d you think is going on, Malfoy?” Ron balked again…”Ron!...Let’s just hear him out!” Harry snapped.
Ron’s jaw gaped. “Harry, it’s bloody July…it’s summer, we’re at a dance club,” Ron looked around, his hand sweeping dramatically about, “with beautiful girls all around us….HE’S LY-ING!”
Draco looked them dead in the eyes, his voice flat, face dark, dangerous…”Am I?”

A/N: OH LORDIE….There is NOTHING, NO-THING I TELL YOU, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING SEXIER than a stressed out, edgy, ready to do battle Draco. GRRRR! Oh, I must calm myself a bit…
Anyway, I think what I like best about this chapter is the interaction between the three boys. It\'s just how I\'d picture them all acting if they did run into each other...And of course if Malfoy was more mature...And if Harry wasn\'t so damn over-reactive...Not to forget his hotheaded, redheaded friend....Well, what do you think? Do you agree? Hit the button there at your left and tell me! It’ll only take a sec and it makes me so happy…Come on. (big smile) I KNOW you’re reading…Pop a note and say hello!
