Chapter 18

Draco and Severus finished their breakfast and headed out the front doors to walk along the lake. They had been excused from classes and wanted to take advantage of the privacy and the open at the same time. They finally reached the lake and Severus transfigured two leaves into a couple of warm blankets. He spread one on the ground and sat down, pulling his lover down to rest against his chest, wrapped up in the second blanket.

They sat there enjoying the time with each other, lost in their own thoughts. Draco was the first to break the silence. “Severus, last night at the reception when you were dancing with Father, I saw you stumble. What did he say?” Severus cleared his throat, stalling for time, not wanting to tell Draco about Lucius threat and then his comments.

“Draco, do you really want to know?” When he felt the head bob up and down against his chest, Severus sighed and began relating what Lucius said, ending with “and I still don’t know why he wanted to hex my parts off.”

Draco began chuckling. “I can at least tell you that much. It seems Harry and Father didn’t get far into reading the book before lust took over and they bonded. When I mentioned about them getting married so my siblings wouldn’t be labeled as bastards, Father lost it. He distinctly remembers you telling him not to worry about male pregnancies and Veelas. He firmly believes he is carrying the next Malfoy-Potter heir.”

Severus looked at Draco, “Shite, I forgot I gathered that information and he never read it. No wonder he was ready to do me in. Now tell me, what caused you to stumble in Harry’s arms?”

Draco stiffened against Severus. “Can I let it go by saying two left feet?” He felt his lover rumble in his chest and knew prevarication time was over. Taking a deep breath he started. ‘Well, I think Trewlaney may have rubbed off on Harry with some things. I do agree with him while he says you agree with me and you are good for me. What I am still puzzled over is why did he sniff me, run his hand over my lower back and say I would have beautiful babies? I mean, every time with Hermione I made sure we cast the protections. Sev, any ideas why?”

The Potions Master sat there and wrapped his arms tighter around the young man. He would have to make certain but he wanted Draco to accept him before the younger man could question why. Severus leaned into Draco’s neck and began trailing kisses along his neck, not trying to arouse, but to convey his deepest feelings. Draco shifted until he was crossways and could reach his lover\'s lips. Severus poured everything he had into the kiss before breaking it off. “Draco, answer a question for me. Would you marry me?”

Draco sat up and looked at his Slytherin. “Severus, I could see us married in the future but not now. Why?”

Severus hung his head. He would have to try harder. “Draco, I meant will you marry me? Now? Or Very Soon?”

Draco looked at him for a minute as his mind, thoughts and memories were pulled into the maelstrom. A sudden idea sprang to life, his body following it. “Oh my gods, Severus I know why you are asking me. It’s out of duty. You think I’m pregnant because of what Harry said. Severus, do you think I would do that to you? To us? You marry me for love, not a product of sex. I’m going back to my quarters. I need time alone to think. I’ll owl or floo you sometime later. Leave me be Severus for the time being.” Draco untangled himself, stood and hurried back to the castle and the safety of his rooms.

Severus sat on the blanket; head held in hands propped up on his knees. Where had Draco got that idea? Hadn’t Severus made it clear enough last night? Should he go to Lucius for advice? That might not be a good idea to voluntarily let Lucius have another chance at him, especially if he thinks I’ve hurt his “little boy”. Severus stayed there a few minutes more contemplating what to do. Finally making up his mind, he stood and turned the blankets back to the leaves to keep the balance and headed to the castle. In a fog, he let his feet lead him. When he raised his head, he shuddered. Oh well, he told himself, in for a penny, in for a pound, he might as well get it over with. With more fear in his heart than he ever had when facing Voldemort, he raised his hand and knocked and waited.

Minutes passed, causing his tension to build before he knocked harder and longer. A glassy eyed blond in a hastily donned robe finally opened the door. “Severus, what is it? Is it Draco?” Severus could only nod as Lucius began hyperventilating. Harry joined them at the door, looking at his husband and his Potion Master. He grabbed a hand on each of them, pulling them into the room and letting the door close behind them. Harry guided Severus to the chair and took Lucius to the sofa.

“Severus, what’s happened? What is it with Draco? You two were so happy last night?”

Severus inhaled. “I don’t know what’s wrong, We were out by the lake talking and…”Severus told them everything that happened and was said this morning. Lucius’ rage began building but whom it was directed at was unclear. His hands drew up into fists as he watched tears slide down his friends cheeks.

“Severus let me get this right. You were prepared to propose to my son without asking me first and now that you think he is carrying your child, you couldn’t convince him to wed you for love not duty? Are you a complete unfeeling idiot? You’ve spent his life with him, haven’t you figured out yet that our Dragon is one of those people you have to show them the truth first and then persuade them to your ways? What type of proof would you have been showing him before the knowledge of a baby came out? And while I’m at it, how did the two of you figure out he’s pregnant? You might be wrong.”

Harry cleared his throat, pulling the attention to himself. “Lucius, the idea came from me I’m afraid. I told Draco last night that he would have beautiful babies with Severus. It must be one of the Veela bonuses I have. I can smell the difference in hormone levels and other things that point to it. Let me go get the book and read some more.” Harry went and returned with the book. “Severus you were the one who wrote the section I believe on pregnancies, why don’t you show me?” He held the book out.

The ebony haired Slytherin took the book. “Harry it will tell you only of your mate’s pregnancy and how you will recognize it. This isn’t helping me get Draco back.” He leaned back into the chair, hoping against hope.

Harry shook his head. “Severus, I am a Nature Guardian and I have the ability to sense and find things that are in need of attention. We think we know what this is, I’m just asking you to help me cross reference pregnancy and nature Guardians to see if what we suspect is real.”

Severus picked up the book again, finding and marking the section. Harry took the book back and began reading. He over calmly set the book down. Now the alarms went off in his head. “Severus, how the fuck could you find that and not tell us? I should let Lucius do as he wants with you. In fact, I will just as soon as you show me the proof you had to offer Draco.” Severus slipped his hand into an inner robe pocket and withdrew two items. The scroll he handed to Lucius, the smaller item he opened and handed to Harry. Harry looked into the box and let out a low pitched but long whistle.

“Severus did you even show him this box before you jumbled the asking? No, you must not have otherwise you’d be in front of Albus getting married already. If I wasn’t Veela with a mate, I’d give him a run for this alone.”

Lucius had opened the scroll and had been reading during the exchanges. He wasn’t stunned or shocked by what he read. It was what he would have expected from Severus, considering he came form a pureblood wizarding family. What did raise his eyebrow were the ending paragraphs. Muggles would have called it a prenuptial agreement and it was extremely generous. Draco would never do this well with someone else. Lucius kept reading through the parchments. He became rather quiet at the second and third pages. He shouldn’t have read them. It was a very personal letter addressed to Draco. Lucius would never doubt Severus feelings for his son. He needed to talk to Draco and see if he could help them. Lucius cleared his throat, rolled up the scroll and handed it back to Severus. He put his hand out to Harry who handed over the ringbox. Lucius also whistled. He echoed Harry’s words, getting a growl from Harry as he chuckled, moving to Harry and kissing him deeply.

“Severus you are coming with us. We will straighten out my son and have you married no later than tomorrow evening.” The three headed for the door and down the halls. They checked the dorms and no one knew where Draco was. They checked all the normal hiding places but couldn’t find him. Lucius turned towards Harry.

“Harry where would you have gone to avoid everyone?” Harry looked at Lucius and shook his head. How could he have forgotten?

“Hold on. I can find him easier than this. Stay here, I’ll be right back.” Harry ran to their quarters, grabbed and activated the Map. Harry found Draco on the map and was stunned. Wait until the others saw where Draco was hiding, His stepson was a dark horse with hidden surprises! As he rejoined Lucius and Severus, he told them he found him and showed them the map. Both men raised eyebrows and looked to Harry who could only grin and laugh. They turned and made their way to the infrequently visited rooms. Coming to the closed doors, Lucius motioned for them to stand off to the side while he knocked. The door opened and there before him stood the most unlikely person he would have thought his son would be seen with. “Argus, may I please speak to my son? We have family matters to discuss.”

Filch eyed Lucius up and down before turning to Mrs. Norris. “What do you think love?” The cat looked at Lucius and hissed. Harry wouldn’t stand for that. He stepped next to his husband and stared at Mrs. Norris. The cat stared at Harry before lying down, turning over, and exposing her belly in total submission.

Harry grinned at Filch and gently called “Draco would you please come to us? We need to talk?” Draco walked to the door seeing his father and Harry. “Why and how did you find me? I need time to think. I’m so confused.”

Lucius stepped up to his son and hugged him. “Draco you need to remain calm and come talk to us. There are things you need to know before you do anything rash that you will regret.” Lucius pulled him closer and out through the door.

“Thank you for listening to him Argus. We’ll have this settled in no time.”

Lucius turned Draco so he was between himself and Harry and headed back to their quarters. Severus stepped in behind them quietly. Draco never saw him but stiffened as he sensed him. The young blond refused to turn and acknowledge him. When they reached the quarters, Draco threw himself in a chair and sat stone faced, eyes fixed, not responding to anyone.

Lucius sat on the table in front of his son, taking Draco’s hands in his own. “Dragon, look at me. I’m going to tell you something you have to believe. I realize you have been through a lot in the past few days and we still have to bury your mother.” At this Draco did snort, curled his lip in a sneer but sat quietly. Lucius continued. “Severus came to us trying to find you after you left him at the lake. In all the years I have known him, I have never seem him in fear like he was today, nor have I ever seen him cry. You have managed to bring out both in him. I know what was said at the lake. Severus can prove to you he was going to ask before either of you thought you may be pregnant. Give him a chance. That’s all I ask. Take the room that you use here and you two talk. We’ll support anything you decide after that.”

Severus reached out a hand to help Draco up. He was ignored.

“Oh, Draco when you are done talking we are both going to Poppy to see what she has to say. Go now.”

Draco stood and headed for his room followed closely by Severus. With a wave of his hand, Harry closed the door behind the two. He turned to his husband, shaking his head and wrapped him in his arms, leading him off to the study for some quiet time while they waited.
