Endowed

Chapter 18 Endowed

Harry would remember it all later as looking like a scene from a science fiction movie. Hermione stood in the circle with her hair being blown by a breeze no one else could feel. She seemed to be giving off her own light, brighter than the fire in the middle of the circle.

Without saying a word, Hermione stretched out her hand and somehow forced Myrtle off of the still form of Professor Snape. Myrtle flew through the air and into a row of Death Eaters who fell like bowling pins from the force. Even Voldemort seemed shocked when the wands Myrtle had taken from them earlier came to Hermione’s outstretched hand.

“Finio Incantationem,” Hermione said quietly as she pointed her wand at Severus.

When Severus stood up, Hermione gave him the other wands. Severus selected his own wand from the bunch and stood beside Hermione with it pointed at the Dark Lord.

“I see your powers have grown Ms. Granger,” Voldemort said and mockingly clapped his hands. “But wandless magic is hardly impressive compared to the powers I possess.”

“Then let’s see what you can do,” Hermione said as she crooked one finger at the Dark Lord.

Surprised and delighted at the change of events, Voldemort began to bring his own wand up. But before the first words were out of his mouth, Hermione shouted a curse of her own.

“Crucio!” Hermione cried.

According to her research, the Crucio curse could only be used if you really wanted to hurt someone. When you said the curse out loud you had to visualize how much you wanted your opponent in pain. And Voldemort did appear to be in pain, but not enough.

“Stupid girl! Do you think that I cannot withstand that curse? I have been through more pain than any one else alive. You don’t die and come back to life without going through pain. You will pay for using that curse against me!”

Voldemort straightened and apparently shook off the pain from the Crucio curse.

“Petrificus Totalus!” The Dark Lord screamed.

“Protego!” Hermione cried out and managed to deflect the blow.

“Relashio!” Severus called out sending a jet of hot red sparks at Voldemort.

“We have to make it back to Hogwarts if we intend to keep our lives,” he said to Hermione as the Dark Lord batted the sparks away.

“You’re right. Stupefy!” Hermione sent the curse at Voldemort and turned to find Harry and Ron struggling with two Death Eaters.

“Tarantella!” Hermione shot the curse at the Death Eaters and watched as they fell to the ground while their legs did a crazy dance completely independent of their owners.

Professor Snape gave Harry and Ron their wands as they made a mad dash out of the forest.

“Oh God, which way back to the castle?” Hermione said as she looked at the thick forest surrounding them.

“Follow the jellybeans,” Ron said as he raced ahead of the group.

“What do you mean?” Hermione asked as she ran.

“I dropped a path of jellybeans on the groundle wle we were walking to the clearing. Follow them back to the castle,” Ron called behind him.

Silently, Hermione blessed Ron. She looked behind them to see several Death Eaters on their tails.

“We have to run faster. They’ve almost caught up to us.” Hermione called.

Jets of green and red light kept hitting the trees and ground around them. So far no one had been hit. The eerie laughter of Voldemort kept following the group as they wound around the trees towards Hogwarts.

In all the commotion, Hermione held on to that feeling of power that had grown while she watched Severus being tortured. She didn’t know where it had come from, but she knew that it would keep them alive.

Just when Harry thought that he could run no more, Hogwarts came into view. It had never looked more beautiful to him, but it was still at the top of the hill, he he didn’t know if they would make it.

Thankfully, as the group approached the bottom of the hill, another sight awaited them. Arranged in ranks, the Aurors had arrived and, apparently, had been preparing to enter the Forbidden Forest when they tumbled out of it.

“Hold your fire!” Professor Snape called out as he pushed Hermione, Harry and Ron ahead of him.

“Hold your fire! Hold your fire!” Several other voices called out as they realized who was coming out of the forest.

“How many are there Severus?” Professor Dumbledore asked.

“About thirty. But the Dark Lord is with them,” Professor Snape said in a hurried breath.

“There are thirty Death Eaters and Voldemort in that forest, and they are heading right for us! Prepare to fire!” the Headmaster called to the troops.

The first of the Death Eaters stumbled out of the forest and right into the Aurors’ trap. Several of them were captured this way, but soon the ambush was discovered and the Aurors had to rush into the forest to take the rest.

Just before Hermione passed out from her exertion, she heard Professor Dumbledore ask Severus, “Are you sure Voldemort is in there?”

Then there was darkness.
