Summary: The war is over and Hogwarts is about to start a new school year. A knock at the door of Severus Snape's office is about to change his life and the lives of those around him. HG/SS

18. Epilogue: The End of the Beginning
"Really, studying under Bill will be invaluable for my research. I'm a witch. I can come home to visit anytime." Silenus was interested in curse breaking and Bill Weasley was still the top authority in the world. Jessica Brownyyn was calling to his daughter from the other side of the room. She was speaking to two young men. Was that a Longbottom she was talking to? Oh gods, he wasn't ready for formal dating. "You know Dad, when opportunity knocks, you have to answer it." Silenus kissed her father on the cheek before taking off to join the other young people. Where had the years gone? His daughter had graduated this morning, top of her class.
Opportunity. He heard his wife's warm laughter as she told a story to Ginny Potter. He could just make out the gentle curve of her stomach. Twins! Poppy had informed them just yesterday. Silenus had had a field day with that! He would miss Silenus very much but he imagined the rest of his brood, especially twfor for Merlin's sake would fill the time.
His son was playing in the corner with...who were they? Was that a Potter and a Weasley? He would have to watch that group as well. Hogwarts may not survive another trio like that. His life was messy, complicated, loud and packed to the rafters. And he would not have had it any other way. It was a life he never planned for. He had been bitter and petty as a child. He was hard and cold as a young man. Even during the war, he had kept a tight hold on himself. He would never be….how had Hermione put it? Warm and fuzzy. Silenus. Hermione. They had slipped in and changed his world. He was still a difficult man to know, but he loved them all with all his heart.
Opportunity. He looked over the group of people here today and smiled as he made his way through the group to join his wife.
Opportunity, a knock at his door. He would be eternally grateful to whatever Gods that had allowed him to answer that knock at his door, so long ago.
