Chapter Seventeen - The End Of School

A/N: Well here it is, the last chapter.

Chapter Seventeen – The End Of School

Harry stood waiting in the front entrance. He had not been allowed to visit Draco in the infirmary even once, not even to wish him a happy birthday. He had bought a big bouquet of enchanted red roses, that would sparkle and hum happy birthday. He had been sure that would melt Madame Pomfrey's heart, so she would let him in. But she snatched them from his hand, and then shut the door right in his face. When he got back to his room the roses was lying on his bed, only now they were broken. All the petals had fallen of, and the humming sounded more like a bunch of angry bees. It was not a good sign.

And now it was the last day of school. He was determined to wait here as long as it took. He had to meet him before he went home. He had talked to the headmaster about what was going to happen to him. It was like a kick in the teeth to find out that he was going home to his family. Dumbledore had said that it would be alright, but Harry could not trust him on this one. He had to persuade Draco to come with him. In fact, he had no doubt at all that they would run away together.

Draco had no reason to stay behind in this hell anymore. They could disappear, maybe go to America, and never come back. Snape would never touch Draco again, and they would be safe and live happily ever after. Harry did not know how many hours he had been lying in his bed, making up scenarios of his and Draco's future life together. They would get married and have a big mansion together, so that Draco would feel at home. Or maybe they would live in a bungalow on a beach somewhere, where they could be all alone.
Harry always came to the same conclusion - it did not matter where, or how, they would live, as long as they got to spend the rest of their lives together.

And as far as harry could see, there was no reason why they could not have their happily ever after. The annoyingly discouraging thought that Draco might be upset with him refused to leave him completely, but Harry pushed it away. He had no doubt that Draco would forgive him. Harry had saved him. He would have probably died. And now he would never have to be alone with Snape ever again. Snape, and all the others, would get their punishment.

As he pondered over his and Draco’s future together, time passed. The entire school went past him, but no Draco. Hermione and Ron took up some of his time, hugging and promising to write. They would not leave him alone until he had promised them he would write, and he would come visit. He spent a few minutes saying goodbye to other classmates, but all he could really think of was Draco.

When the crowd thinned, Harry began wondering if he could have missed Draco when he finally saw the blonde locks he had stroked so many times. He felt butterflies in his stomach and ran forward to hug him, but Draco stopped him. Harry was not prepared for that.

“Go away.”

“Draco–” The butterflies in Harry’s stomach turned into nausea. He had hoped Draco would have understood there was nothing to be upset about. Harry had saved him. They could run away together. He would not have to be afraid anymore.

“No. I don’t want to talk to you. Leave me alone.”

“But Draco… Please. You have to know I only did it because I love you. Now we can have a future together! You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”

“You honestly believe you did it because you love me? You didn’t do it because you love me, you did it because you love yourself and because you’re selfish, Potter. You didn’t want to share me, and so you’d rather ruin my entire life.”

Harry fought, trying to hold back the tears threatening to fall. Draco sounded exactly like he did before: ignorant, cold, and superior, as though he did not care about anything other than himself. He could not seriously believe what he just said, could he? Of course Harry loved him! A fear arose in Harry, one he had not had before. Worst-case scenario for Harry had been that Draco was a bit upset with him for a while. He had never seriously considered that Draco would go back home to his parents. Why would he walk to his death like that?

“Please, Draco, don’t do this. Don’t go to your father! Come with me! Run away with me! We love each other. Doesn’t that count for something?” The tears were streaming down Harry’s face by now. When he saw the way Draco looked at him, he could not ignore the now very probable possibility that Draco would go back to Malfoy mansion. What if he did, and died? Harry was not sure he could survive that.

Draco looked down his nose at him. ”Love each other? Potter, I hate you. I don’t love you, I never have and I never will. I was only using you to get what I wanted. Now leave me alone.” And with that Draco left, leaving Harry to stare after him in disbelief. It did not take many seconds before he collapsed on the floor. Ten minutes ago he had been planning their life together. Worlds apart from what he was facing now. Would Draco ever love him again? Was he facing a life without Draco? And most importantly, would Draco even survive this?

Less than a minute after Draco left, he collapsed in the special ordered limousine coming to take him home. As tears flowed down his face he congratulated himself on his good acting while he was trying not to scream out his anguish. It was better this way. If Harry was angry with him, he would not care so much when he died. But Draco could not forget that look in Harry’s eyes when he said he did not love him. No matter how much Harry had betrayed him, Draco had not ever wanted to see him so sad, much less knowing he was the one to cause it.

An hour later, the car stopped, and Draco tried desperately to calm himself. He had stopped crying a while ago, but now he was facing a new kind of anguish. For the first time since the group rape, Draco did not want to die. Harry had showed him how life was supposed to be, and now he did not want to leave it.

Why did Harry have to meddle? Could he not just leave it alone? They could have been together now, and they would have been happy. But he had to betray him, to sell him to his father. No matter where they went, Lucius would find him after this kind of betrayal. Did Harry not understand how much this would injure the Malfoy name? And now Draco would be punished for it. His survival instincts screamed at him to run. But he had no Harry anymore, and so there was no reason for him to put this off any longer.

Sighing, he composed himself and left the car, looking as a true Malfoy. With a twinge of fear, he wondered if it would hurt terribly. He hoped he would see Harry’s face before he died.

The End

A/N: Sorry it was so short. But just so you guys know, there will be an epilogue. :)

Queen of the Darkness: I didn't even know it was St. Patrick's. :P We don't really celebrate that in Sweden. But why not! ^^

Angry: Wow, you sure had some ideas on how to punish Snape. But, as lovely as all that sounds, it won't happen. :/ Not here anyway, but you can always make up your own punishment. That's what's good about fanfiction! ^^

mrequecky: One would have hoped.. It was brave of Harry. But you have to see why Draco is hurt, as well?

elphaba: Thank you very much! :D Makes me happy! ^^

thrnbrooke: Poor Harry is not forgiven.. Can you blame draco though?

xxblu-monkiixx: Aawwm thank you so very much! :D That was like, the best review I've gotten in a long time. So cute! ^^ Thank you, you made my day! :D

ChloeWeir: Haha, you're cute! ^^
