Chapter 17-Bedazzled Snake
The day after Hermione found out about Draco's party, she sat in her room sorting through her jumbled thoughts.
"What does one get someone who does not like you? Who you only sort of know? And who has all the money in the world and could buy anything they wanted?" rubbing her hands in her face, Hermione let out a frustrated sigh. She had asked Ginny to help her the moment she got back from Malfoy Manor. Told her that she, Ron, Harry, and Luna were invited. Ginny just laughed at her and said he was all hers. So, Hermione went back to the Head Common Room and pulled out a book from her parents called My Life as a Muggle by Daisy Hookum, grunting about the whole situation.
And here she sat, on her four poster bed, the gold curtains dimming the sunset's rays as they broke through to her room. Glancing at her clock on the night stand, she saw that she had a little over two hours until Draco would escort her to his manor. She didn't even have anything to wear! Groaning yet again, Hermione decided what ever was in her closet would have to do, and stood to start her shower.
After about forty-five minutes, Hermione walked back into her room, noticing a package on her bed wrapped in silver paper film. Pulling the towel closer to her body, she saw a small note addressed to her.
Dearest Hermione,
Draco had told me that you had trouble finding a dress for the evening. So, being me, I went and found you this. Don't even think about trying to pay back either of us back. I hope I got the right size, but I'm sure being the Smartest Witch of Your Age, you can fix that no? See you this evening!
Sincerely,
Narcissa
Shaking her head, Hermione fingered the silver package. She was almost afraid to open it. Beautiful and expensive things belonged on the rich and well bred. She wasn't putting her self down being a muggleborn, but she was no Malfoy. Pulling her hand away, Hermione decided that she would do her hair first before putting on the dress. After many minutes of pulling and taming her hair, she managed to pull the honey colored locks into a french twist. Satisfied with her work, she gave herself a small smile in the mirror. So far so good.
"Oi, Granger! You almost ready?"
Startled by the voice on the other side, she looked to the door. "Yea, I just have to put on the dress your mother gave me."
"Well get on with it witch." Draco pressed.
Standing, Hermione unwrapped the package and gasped. It was as dark as the night sky, and made of the finest silk she was sure. Pulling the dress on she looked in the mirror. It was floor length, with a slit from the front to just a few inches above her knee. The neck line plunged into a "V" and the back ended just below her butt. The thin straps that held up her dress crisscrossed in between her shoulder blades. Diamonds made swirl patterns on her breasts and lower back. It was beautiful, Hermione gave Mrs. Malfoy that, but could she pull it off?
"Granger, we're going to be late."
"I just have to grab my shoes, hold on Malfoy." Quickly glancing around the room to see if she could find the heels Ginny lent her, she saw the silver heels over by the door. Strapping them on, she opened the door to see Draco standing over by the fireplace. He was staring at her school picture on the mantle, lost in thought. He looked amazing. Dressed in light gray sports jacket and slacks, he looked sexy yet powerful. His dress shirt was a simply white, but he had a dark blue skinny tie around his neck. Coughing to break her thoughts from how good he looked, he slowly turned.
And he stared.
Hermione felt uneasy. He didn't even blink for the longest time. Then, he walked up to her and pulled out a long velvet box. Draco opened the box to reveal a beautiful emerald encrusted necklace. It was in the shape of a snake, no surprise, but Hermione still was awed by its beauty.
"I picked this up from the manor the other day. Was my great-great-great Aunt Cassiopeia Black's. This will keep the vultures away if I'm not around." He smirked as he slipped the cool metal around her neck. Blushing at the touch of his warm hands on her necks, Hermione felt goose bumps rise on her skin.
"Thank you Malfoy. Its breath taking. I'll remember to return it to you at the evening. Along with the dress. Your mother really out did her self."
"They are yours to keep." He replied taking her small arm into his as they walked to Snape's office to use the floo. He softly rubbed his hand on her arm, calming the nerves that rolled off of her in waves. He would be nervous too if he was a lonely lion in the snake's nest. Draco was confident though that she would have them all in the palm of her hand. And with the way the dressed hugged her curves, he would be beating many men away. He smiled at the thought. Malfoy's always got the best, and tonight he had the best. Not that Hermione was a prize to be won.
"I couldn't. The necklace and dress are amazing really. But so, expensive!"
"The money spent won't even be missed. And the necklace, is mine to give away. So shut up and get in the floo."
Blushing realizing that they had already reached Snape's office, she stepped into the fire place and moved over for Draco to get in. He wrapped a hand around her waist and watched green flames erupt from the floor.
Sounds of violin and people talking played on Hermione's ears. Stepping onto the marble floor as Draco pulled her out, her heels clicked softly next to his dress shoes.
"Draco! Hermione! Oh, there you are. Late as always Draco, really." Came a voice. Turning around, they saw Narcissa Malfoy gliding down the hall. Baby blue silk billowed behind her as she moved. Her dress was just as extravagant as Hermione's. Strapless, it was floor length and wore diamond earrings that hung down in a straight line. Jealous of the woman's beauty, she looked to the floor, directing her vision else where. "Oh, Hermione! You look absolutely breath taking! Doesn't she Draco dear?"
Looking up at Draco, she saw his gray eyes swirl with unleashed passion. It looked like he was ready to devour her.
"Yes. She looks like a Malfoy doesn't she mother?"
"Even better than a Malfoy. Oh, Aunt Cassiopeia Black's necklace eh Draco?" Smirked Mrs. Malfoy.
"Mother."
"Thank you for the dress, Mrs. Malfoy. I feel almost unworthy to wear it." Hermione interrupted.
"Nonsense. And for heaven's sake, its Narcissa." smiled the elder witch. "Now, hurry along. The Birthday Boy is late to his own party. Everyone is waiting in the Ball Room. Run along." Bidding Narcissa a quick farewell, Hermione was pulled along side Draco who mumbled something about nosy mothers.
Once inside the ball room, the source of music and chatter increased. Wizards and witches of all ages and races mingled around the softly lit room. Candles, much like the ones at Hogwarts, were suspended in the enchanted night sky. The elegance of the air made Hermione wish she was in the Heads Common Room, curled up with her books. Remembering that she, was a Gryffindor, she took a deep breath and bucked up her lion courage.
Throughout the night, Hermione met what was left to the Malfoy and Black families. Along with friends and work executives who worked under the late Lucius Malfoy. After an hour or so, Hermione was comfortable talking to all the Slytherins. With the older wizards and witches, they talked about books, spells, politics and the history of magic. Draco only left her side long enough to make sure everyone was having a splendid time.
"Ms. Granger. How is Hogwarts doing now a days? I haven't been there in the longest time." asked Farrah Zabini, Blaise Zabini's half sister from his father's side. She was just as dark as her younger brother, but instead of dark walnut colored eyes, she had these light gray eyes. Her smile was warm and inviting, something that must have came from the late Zabini's side.
"Oh, it had be repaired after the war. But, its still holds all of it's old magic." smiled Hermione.
"And how are you and the young Malfoy doing?"
"Pardon?"
"Oh, don't you blush at me Ms. Granger. The way that boy looks at you makes me get all hot, and I'm just watching!" Laughed the older witch. "But really, whats going on between you two?"
"Nothing at. He's still the same git that grew my teeth to an absurd length back in third year. His mother and I just get along well so he tolerates me more." protested Hermione. Okay, that was a bit of a lie. She didn't know was going on between them either. But, what ever it was, it was confusing the hell out of her. And Hermione Granger did not like being confused.
"Oh poppy cock! You and him..."
"What are you doing to the poor Gryffindor, Zabini?" came a thick voice from behind. Turning around, Hermione saw Draco standing a few feet away, intently staring at her. Blushing and smiling at him, she saw him give her a small smirk, barely visible.
"Oh, just girl talk Draco. You must have her come to your summer cottage this year! She and I have become such good friends!"
"Hm. Yes, well. Its time for everyone to leave so if you don't mind. I must steal Granger to bid farewell to my guests." Grabbing hold of Hermione's elbow, he watched the girls say goodbye before pulling her to the front gates. "Did you enjoy yourself tonight Granger?"
"I did surprisingly." Hermione gave a chuckle. To think, hours ago she thought she was going to be served as the main course to a bunch of hungry Slytherins. Fingering the cool emerald snake necklace, she walked out to the cast iron gates with Draco. She watched the moon light pour its rays on his blond hair, giving him a calming aurora. "Happy Birthday, by the way. I didn't get you anything. Sorry, I couldn't think of anything to get you. And here you gave me such a wonderful jewel." Smiled Hermione.
"I'm glad you enjoined the party. Everyone seemed to be smitten by you. Don't worry about the present. I already got what I wanted." Smirking, Draco turned back to Hermione, watching her trace the pattern of the snakes body, coiling around the thin metal. He loved seeing Slytherin on her. It made her seem so, naughty. Stepping up to her, took a finger and followed her finger's path.
"What did you get? I don't remember getting you anything." Questioned the brunette.
"This." Leaning in, he crashed his soft lips onto hers. Recovering from her shock, she closed her eyes and allowed him to invade her mouth. Draco grabbed hold of her waist with one hand and her cheek with other, holding her firm against his body. Sooner than either of them would have liked, Draco pulled away and looked down at her plump lips. "Mm. I have to go say goodbye to everyone. Mother wants us to spend the night. Hope that's alright. You 'll have your own room, and cloths to use at your disposal. Don't even protest." Smiling at her once more, he dropped his hands from her warm body and walked down the cobble stone path, disappearing in between the shrubs. Feeling the cool air of the night, Hermione put a finger to her lips, missing the warmth of his body and stared after his figure.
"Bloody hell! He did it again!"
