Goodbyes
Goodbyes
Harry packed up the last of their things, looking over to Ginny who was speaking to Minerva. She had tried to talk them out of leaving, but he said it was time.
“Ginny wants to try out for the Harpies,” he said. “And I need some extensive training I can’t get here if I ever want to be the auror that I want.”
She nodded. “We will miss you two very much. You were a blessing to have as part of the staff.”
They were at the train station when they saw them. Bill smiled at his sister, waving to her. Harry and she went rushing over to him. Kingsley stood off to the side but said nothing to either of them.
“Ron called me,” Bill said to them, hugging his sister. “Here.” He handed her a business card. “That’s our business card. We deal with everything from curse breaking to your potions needs. As soon as Hermione wakes up, I’m sure we’ll add research to the list as well.”
“How long will she be asleep for?” Harry asked quietly.
“Oh, until an emergency or when she wakes up from her nap,” he answered. “Which ever comes first.”
“But…”
It was Kingsley who said, “She’ll probably be getting up about the time your great grandkids have kids of their own.”
Harry’s jaw dropped but he said nothing.
Bill rolled his eyes and said, “Please! Ten years at the most and you know it.” He looked over to both of them. “Here.” He handed a letter to Harry. “She gave me this to give to you.”
Harry opened it in a rush. He must have read it three times before Ginny took it from him to read for herself.
Dear Harry,
I’m tired. Down to my marrow tired. Certainties aren’t so clear anymore. Have they ever been? I miss you. Your friendship meant everything to me. I did what I thought was the right thing to do. Was I wrong? I’m going to sleep now. Something tells me that I won’t wake for a time. Be well. Tell your grandchildren of me. They might see me.
Your Friend Forever,
Hermione Jane Granger-Snape
Ginny looked up from the letter in time to see her brother waving goodbye from down the way. The train’s steam seemed to fill the station platform and then they were gone.
“Where did they go?” Ginny asked in awe.
“I don’t know,” Harry answered, just as amazed as his wife was. “May be it’s for the best that we don’t.”

Deep in the dark of the night three men made their way through the cemetery. Sure of foot they walked to the crypt, knowing what they had to do must be done. Once there, they opened it. They looked to each other and made their way inside. The found the man’s coffin and made quick work of opening it.
“Wow,” Bill said quietly. “He looks so…normal. Are you sure he’s a vampire?”
“He’s supposed to look normal,” Kingsley pointed out. “He’s only in hibernation, remember?”
“But…”
“He was never dying. It was a ruse. He needed to be reborn as it were. His body was damaged he needed to heal and I think some people were beginning to get suspicious. Somewhere along the line people were going to connect all his time in Romania to his longevity.” He snorted. “Besides, who do you think changed me over?” the other man asked. “Let’s get this over with.”
The third man reached out and took the stake from Kingsley and the mallet from Weasley. Placing the point very carefully, he slammed the mallet down and plunged the stake through the heart of the man he once called master.
Severus stepped back, letting out a long breath as tension left him. It was done. The old man was dead. They all watched as the body of Albus Dumbledore turned to ash.
“Why did we do this again?” Bill asked quietly.
“Because our queen ordered us to,” Severus answered. “Close up the coffin. Our work here is done.”
“But…” Bill went on, but stopped as Snape turned to him.
“This is her territory now and she will not put up with the likes of that old fool dictating over our lives anymore,” the older man hissed. “We are done playing his games and dancing to his tune. Now we live for ourselves.”
Bill walked away still not understanding. Kingsley called him naïve as he followed him out. Snape stayed there a moment.
“Goodbye old man,” he said to the coffin. “Can’t say I’m sorry to see you go.”
