Here we are...Chapter 17. Hope it's good.

Lucius sat in his study. Alone.

Lucius sat in his study. Alone.

She’d only left three days, twelve hours, thirty-one minutes, and seventeen seconds ago. The Evening Prophet showed a smiling picture of the three ‘heroes.’ It made Lucius want to vomit, seeing those fools draped over Hermione.

Lucius flung the paper into the fire as he’d done with every paper that had come since she’d gone. He hissed as sparks blasted out were blown up against his injured cheek.

Three days, twelve hours, thirty-one minutes, and twenty-three seconds ago and no visit.

Three days, twelve hours, thirty-one minutes, and twenty-eight seconds ago and no floo conversation.

Three days, twelve hours, thirty-one minutes, and thirty-two seconds ago and not so much as an owl.

Lucius downed his fourth glass of Ogden’s Old before he stumbled to his bed.

Three weeks, two days, four hours, twelve minutes, thirty-nine seconds since Her-Hermione l-left him.

No sleepovers; no visits; no floos; not even an owl to see how he was getting on after the werewolf attack.

Lucius was into his third bottle of firewhiskey for the evening, and he downed the fifth shot of the second bottle before he turned in that day.

He lay on his bed, and he glared at the sun shining through his window.

“Damn you!” he yelled at the sun. “And damn me.”

He threw a pillow at the window before he buried his head under the remaining pillows.

What was the point of getting up when Hermione wanted nothing to do with him? What was the point of getting up when he broke the spell to be left by his true love?

~*~~*~~~*~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~~*~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~*~~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~*~~~*~~*~

Two months, one week, three days, fourteen hours, seven minutes, and forty-nine seconds s-s-since Hermione left h-him.

He didn’t bother to leave the bed anymore even when he downed the nasty potions Severus brought for him to cheer him. He mostly lay with his face pressed close to where she’d lain to smell what he could of the remaining scent. He’d cast a spell to help it linger and had forbade anyone from touching that pillow.

“Nelly,” Lucius called, voice muffled by the pillow with which he buried his face. “Nelly.”

“Yes, Master Lucius,” the weary house-elf asked. She touched her palm to her master’s forehead.

“I don’t feel well,” Lucius griped, swiping Nelly’s hand away.

“Master Lucius, you’s not eaten in weeks. No wonders. All you do is drinks your spirits and mopes. You should goes out. Peoples wants to see you.”

“I don’t care about people,” Lucius declared, and he pinched his face up closing his eyes to drown out the opalescent glow everything had around it. “Hermione, she doesn’t want to be with me. I woke her from the door-row-zen curse. I’m her true love. I woke her up. I’m—I’m the one who’s been to hell and back for her. I have scars on my face for her. I love her, Nelly.”

Lucius seized the elf’s hand and pulled it close. Nelly stroked his hair with her free hand.

“Where is Severus?” he mumbled. “That damn happy potion doesn’t work anymore.”

Severus stood in the doorway. All this over a girl. He could understand Lucius. Muggleborn witches were wily. They could snare wizards like they candy canes to be plucked from a Christmas tree. They were vile, wicked little things. Always stealing the heart of a Slytherin before running off with a stupid, boring Gryffindor.

“I have a new potion for you to try to lift your spirit Lucius. It’s what I took after Lily…” Severus cut off.

“That’s right, Severus,” Lucius said, licking the top of a bottle of Ogden’s. “You—you—you had a pretty witch leave you too. She took everything. And left you broken. You finally understood my—my—my plight. Hermione’s mean to me, Severus.” Lucius grabbed Severus’ hand and held it against his cheek. “Witches…”

“Yes,” Severus said, removing his hand from the drunken man’s. “I hope that this potion helps you feel better.”

Three months, zero days, eight hours, forty-seven minutes, thirteen seconds since she left him.

The sludge Severus had been stuffing down his throat hadn’t cheered him a bit. It had just prevented him from sleeping. Lucius held a vile of ‘sludge’ in one hand and vodka in the other. He alternated between them as he drank leaned back against his pillow.

Tap. Tap.

“Father,” Draco’s voice accompanied the gentle rapping on the door. “Are you in there, Father?”

Lucius took a gulp of vodka. He smiled at his other visitor.

“I like vodka,” Lucius informed Severus.

“Come in, Draco,” Severus called as Lucius slammed the vile down in his hand hard enough to crack the glass. “You better stop that.”

Lucius just held up the bottle of vodka in cheers and tried to get a drink.

“Father, I have news for you,” Draco said.

Lucius just turned over and faced away.

“I can’t take any more bad news.”

“I won’t let you see this in the papers tomorrow,” Draco said, forcing his father to face him. “Will you sit up and try to pay attention?”

Lucius jerked up and glared at his son and best friend. Why wouldn’t they let him mope? Hermione must hate him to ignore him. Sure, he could have sent her an owl. But she should owl him first.

“What do you want, Boy?”

“Weasley proposed to Hermione, and she accepted.”

Lucius just put the empty bottle of vodka to his lips and tried to drink. He reached for his wand.

“Accio wand,” Severus said, and Lucius’ wand flew into his hand.

“I want my wand,” Lucius said, and tears began to pour down his cheeks. “I want my wand.”

“You’re drunk enough to do something quite stupid now.”

“I’ll jump off the balcony, then,” Lucius said, struggling against the sheets.

Draco jabbed his wand at the balcony doors. The locks spun and bound the doors closed.

“Not FAIR!” Lucius wailed, slamming his fists on the mattress. “I’m a Malfoy. I should get what I want!”

“Did you ever tell Hermione that you are interested in her? She is a Gryffindor, and they tend to be rather thick,” Severus said.

“I saved her from a werewolf and from Death Eaters. I awakened her. How much more clear could I be? She must know my feelings for her.”

“Declare your feelings for her in sending her an owl,” Severus said. “Lucius, be a gentleman to the young woman.”

“She is a fool if she doesn’t know.”

“You may not be as readable now as you were to her twenty-six years ago. She doesn’t know you as you are now. We are all fools when it comes to love,” Severus said, walking toward the door. “I’ll take my leave of you now. I’ll be back tomorrow evening with your potion.”

Severus left the room and shook his head.

“Father, manipulate her. We are Slytherins. That’s how we play quiditch,” Draco said, and his lips were twisted in a frown as he hugged his father.

Lucius nodded to his only child.

“I think you are right, Draco.”

Draco nodded. “I’ll come in the morning, and we can begin our plans.”
