Chapter 16 – Disappointment

It was nearing the Christmas holidays and the students were looking forward to going home for the holidays. Draco, for the first time, was staying at school as he had heard nothing from his father since the day that his relationship with Harry had come out. His father had not come to talk to him or even sent a Howler. Draco was very worried, but he wouldn’t let on to Harry how much.

Elli was happy to be staying at the school as she would be with the rest of her family. Also, she would be able to slip off to be with her “Zaytche” whenever he could get away, which seemed to be quite often recently. She knew that Tatko didn’t approve, but she loved him and it was her life. She walked down to the dungeons to Severus’s quarters. He had asked her to meet him there just after breakfast.

She knocked on the door of Severus’s quarters and when she heard “Enter”, pushed the door open and allowed Canth to go before her. Before she fully entered the room she could smell both her Tatko and her Papa. She smiled at the two men. Remus went over and hugged her, which she returned; Severus cleared his throat and glared at his lover.

“Elli, we have some news about the Christmas holidays.” Severus looked at his “daughter”, who had a frown on her face.

“I thought that we were staying here for the holidays, as it is the safest place for both you and Draco?”

Severus felt Remus take his hand and welcomed the warmth. “Well, yes, it is one of the safest places because of the wards, but it has been decided that we would also be safe at Grimmauld for the holidays, so that is where we are going to be. The Weasleys and Longbottom will be there too, so you won’t be on your own.”

Elli started to feel a panicky feeling inside; this couldn’t be happening. she had everything planned. If she wasn’t here then she couldn’t meet Zaytche until after the holidays as he wouldn’t come to Grimmauld, just in case he was seen and his cover was blown. How was she going to survive not seeing him, not being able to feel him, love him? She flicked her gift on as she had a suspicious thought, and it was confirmed as she looked at Severus. On the outside he looked unemotional, but she knew him and she could see that he was nervous, nervous about her reaction to the news. He wanted them apart. He didn’t like Zaytche and her being together, but he couldn’t do anything outwardly. But behind the scenes...well, he was a spy. She felt her inner wolf get angry, but she held it at bay.

She took a couple of deep breaths. “Okay. When will we be going?” The only sign of her feelings was her hand slightly moving on Canth’s neck.

Severus smiled. His plan was working. “School finishes in four days, and we will be leaving the morning after. The Weasleys will be there the day after that, but Longbottom will be coming with us,” he finished with a sneer.

Elli nodded. “I must start packing then. Oh, I also need to go into Hogsmeade and do last-minute shopping if possible, please.”

Remus smiled. “I think that can be arranged, honey. I will just go and have a word with the Headmaster. Why don’t you go and find the others and see if anyone else wants to go too?”

Elli nodded, turned and left the room following Canth, planning what she needed to do in the next few days. The first task would be done as soon as she got to her rooms.

Remus turned to Severus, with fury in his eyes. “If I find out that this was for anything other than for safety, I will make you pay.” With that, he turned and left, leaving a stunned Potions master alone in the room.

Elli made her way to her rooms as fast as she could. When she got there she went into her bedroom, closed the door and sat on her bed. Holding her wand over her arm, she whispered a spell and where there had been bare skin now there lay a beautiful snake with blue-green eyes. With another spell, small dots appeared. She ran her fingers over them. Satisfied with it, another spell was whispered and the dots disappeared. When Zaytche had given her the bracelet it had only been a one-way communication, but with the help of a couple of her friends (Hermione, Pansy and, surprisingly, Neville,) they had found a way to send and receive messages between the two pieces.

She retrieved her travelling cloak and, with Canth, left in search of the others.

Remus left the Headmaster’s office and headed towards the front doors of the school. When he got there he saw Elli had managed to convince not just Harry, Ron and Hermione, but Neville, Seamus, Ginny and Luna to come. Remus could also see Draco hiding behind Hermione and Harry. He heard familiar steps behind him and with a flourish that Severus would have been happy with, he motioned them to follow him and he stalked out of the school.

They separated into groups when they got to Hogsmeade; Harry had been dragged into the bookshop by Draco and Hermione whilst Ginny and Luna had dragged Seamus into Honeydukes. Elli had told Ron and Neville exactly what she was after so when no-one was watching them, they Apparated away. Severus had caught up with them just outside of the school and had persuaded Remus to go for a drink with him. The students had been given three hours to do their shopping and then they were all to meet outside of Honeydukes to head back to school. They were all waiting for Harry, Draco and Hermione who, when they finally got there apologised profusely, with Harry muttering under his breath something about “bloody books”.

Elli was very pleased with her purchases and knew that that the people that they were intended for would love them. With a last head count, Remus and Severus herded the group back to Hogwarts, and when they were within its boundaries they both breathed a sigh of relief that nothing had gone wrong.
