Chapter 16- D-Day

Love…War…What’s the Difference?

D-Day

The day of the final battle dawned cloudy and a threat of rain hung in the air. At dawn, the students not fighting were moved into hiding. Over half of Slytherin had already disappeared to join their parents in fighting with Voldemort. The remaining Slytherin were from families who were staying out of the fighting all together.

“Is it done?” Albus asked as Hermione and Severus entered his office.

“Yes. Both potions have been successfully administered. We’re ready Albus,” Severus answered.

“Very well,” Albus nodded.

The three left the office and headed for the Great Hall. There, the Order and it’s allies stood patiently waiting for orders. Hermione and Severus took their places behind Albus in between Lucius and Harry.

“Today, we will fight for our freedom. You all are as ready as you are ever going to be. Remember your training and watch out for one another. Do those and we will succeed,” Albus said.

Voldemort led his Death Eater through the gates of Hogwarts. Draco was on his right and Narcissa on his left. Behind them was Ron, Pansy, and Bellatrix. Shortly after entering the ground, Bella, Pansy, and Ron managed to slip away and hurried to join the Order and Harry.

“Well, it seems we have been betrayed again. No matter. Kill them all!” Voldemort ordered as he saw Harry and the Order of the Phoenix waiting for him.

The two sides clashed. Slowly, Harry, Albus, Lucius, Hermione, and Severus began cutting through the chaos. Ron and Pansy fought as one; standing back-to-back, covering each other. A few feet away, Remus and Sirius were fighting the same way.

After an hour, Harry finally reached Voldemort, who was standing with Draco and Narcissa. “No! You’re suppose to be dead!” Narcissa yelled when she saw Hermione and Severus.

“Sorry to disappoint you bitch. Guess you should have tried harder,” Hermione snarled.

“It’s time to finish this Voldemort,” Harry said.

“I agree,” Voldemort hissed.

“Avada Kedavra!” Harry and Voldemort screamed.

As they battled, Albus and Lucius kept the other Death Eaters away while Hermione and Severus dueled with Narcissa and Draco. Hermione’s amber eyes locked with the blue eyes of Narcissa.

“Guess I’ll have to finish what I started in January,” Narcissa snarled.

“Ha. Go ahead and try,” Hermione laughed.

Narcissa let out a scream and charged at Hermione. She, was ready however and pulled out a dagger. Hermione plunged the dagger as hard and as deep as she could into Narcissa’s chest.

“See you in hell,” Hermione said.

“Bye bye asshole. AVADA KEDAVRA!” Harry yelled as he pulled out and pointed his father’s wand at Voldemort.

Voldemort let out an inhuman scream as the curse flew toward him. All the fighting stopped for a second as his screams grew louder. Taking advantage of their distraction, the Order managed to capture the Death Eaters with little problems.

As Voldemort began to disintegrate, Hermione let out a scream as Severus fell to the ground. Before Draco could move, he was hit in the chest by the Killing Curse from Lucius, Albus, and Harry.

“Severus. Oh god Severus…please open your eyes,” Hermione pleaded as she knelt beside him.

“Are you…all right?” Severus gasped.

“I’m fine. You just stay still. We’ll get you to Poppy,” Hermione answered tearfully as it began to rain.

Hermione sat with Lucius while Poppy worked on Severus. The others wanted to stay with them, but Poppy said only Hermione and Lucius could remain in the hospital wing at the moment.

“Everything’s going to be all right Hermione,” Lucius said as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

Just then, Poppy came walking toward them. Hermione and Lucius jumped to their feet, anxiously waiting to hear some good news.

“How is he?” Hermione demanded.

“He’s sleeping at the moment. I suggest the two of you go get a shower and a hot meal. You can come back in an hour,” Poppy instructed.

“I won’t leave him,” Hermione stated.

“I understand you don’t want to leave Hermione, but at the moment there is nothing you can do. It won’t do to get yourself all worked up,” Poppy said.

“She’s right Hermione. Let’s get cleaned up, grab some food, then come back,” Lucius added.

“Fine,” Hermione sighed.

Hermione had just entered the study after a nice hot shower, when she saw it. An envelope on Severus’ desk addressed to her. She picked it up, sat on the sofa and opened it. It was in Severus’ handwriting.

My Beloved Wife, Hermione,

If you are reading this, something went wrong in the battle. I want you to know that I love you with every fiber of my being.

Jade used to say, ’Love…War…What’s the difference? You have to fight for love and you have to fight in war,’ I never understood what she meant till I met you. I had to fight my own insecurities to let you into my heart and fight people’s prejudices to keep you.

These last six months with you in my life have been the happiest six months of my life. If I had my life to live over again, you know what I would change? Not a damned thing. I only wish I could have told you I love you, held you, kissed you, and made love to you one more time.

Enclosed with this letter is my last will and testament. Everything I own, including Snape Manor, is now yours. That also includes all potion residuals that I have coming in.

Before we went into hiding, I met with Jade and Omar. I told them about us and the changes I made to my will. They said I made the right choice to leave everything to you. They also said, should anything happen to me, they would make sure you are taken care of.

Hermione, know this. No matter what, I will always be with you in spirit. I love you Hermione. Never forget me.

Eternally yours,
Severus

Hermione tearfully pulled his will from the envelope. She gasped when she saw it had been revised not once, but twice. The first time was two days after they confessed their love to each other. The second time, was a week after they were married.

“Oh Severus,” she said tearfully.

Hermione and Lucius had just entered the hospital wing, when Poppy pulled them into her office. With a heavy sigh, she began speaking. “I’ve done all I can for Severus. The rest is now up to him,”

“Then he’ll be fine,” Lucius stated.

“Lucius, he’s extremely tired and weak. If I didn’t know any better, I would say that he’s given up the will to fight,” Poppy replied.

Hermione turned and stormed from the office. She would be damned if she was going to let her husband just give up and die. For as long as she had known him, she had never seen him give up or give in. To anything.

“Severus,” Hermione said.

“Hello love,” Severus whispered as he opened his eyes.

“Severus Lamar Snape, don’t you dare give in and die. I need you. So does our child,” she said heatedly as she placed his left hand on her stomach.

“Our…child?” he asked in shock.

“Yes. I found out that I’m three months pregnant. I found out yesterday. You can’t die. I won’t let you. Now, you fight god damnit! You fight and come back to me and our child!” she answered with a fire in her eyes that Severus had never seen before.

Severus’ eyes drifted closed. Poppy and Lucius just stood there. Both hoping that Hermione would be the one person who could bring him back.
