Ruminations
Draco walked her to her door, kissed her very unchastely and hustled her into her quarters before he attempted to take her standing up in the corridor.
"By the way, Madame, you daugther wished to tell you good-night. I offered to give you her message."
"Thank you. So, we'll all have dinner together Saturday night and...talk."
"Yes. I think it would be best. We'll tell all three children together. Potter can help with the Weasleys since he already knows of my involvement in his neice's life now."
"Good night, Draco." She whispered huskily, her eyes hooded and passion dark.
"Woman, it's almost two am and as tired as I am, I'm still tempted to follow you into your bed. But, I cannot. Lilah is downstairs. I'll see you at breakfast tomorrow then." He leaned down and kissed the back of her hand, making her whole arm tingle with want and desire.
"Alright. Good night, Draco." She entered and turned to kiss his lips suddenly.
"I have to go downstairs, Hermione." He whispered against her lips, pulling her closer instead to his aroused body. He pushed her away suddenly and walked away from her.
"Breakfast. Sleep well, love." He winked and hurried down the corridor, jumping onto a set of moving stairs before they got too far. She laughed at his antic, then closed the door, leaning her forehead against it as she thought about everything that had happened that night. Her well cared for, carefully thought out life was coming apart at the seams. Somehow, she had to tell an entire clan of Weasleys that the child they thought of as their beloved Ron's daughter wasn't actually his.
'I'll take a page out of Scarlett O'Hara's book and think about it another day. Right now, I have to get into bed and get some sleep before starting to teach.' She turned and headed into her bedroom, dropped on top of her bed still clothed and fell into a deep uninterrupted sleep.
Down in the dungeons, Draco was sitting in front of his fireplace, ruminating about the evening he'd just spent with his lover. He grinned, wondering if he dared try and arrange a little liason after lunch tomorrow, maybe drag her into an abandoned classroom for a quickie. She'd probably hex him if he tried. Yeah, he was glad he'd come back to England and taken the position when Severus had offered it. He'd planned on searching out Hermione anyway: being in the same castle made it easier to seduce her. Finding out that he was the natural father of her eldest child was a shock, and yes, he was still a bit angry at her for keeping it from him, but they'd come to an accord. He grinned again. A very thorough and satisfying accord.
Adrianna entered the Transfigurations classroom the next morning, excited more about starting her magical education than about seeing her mother. She saw her mother every day, but wasn't allowed to use a wand until now.
"Good morning, class. Take your seats. One Gryffindor, one Slytherin per table, please. Thank you." Hermione sat behind her desk and watched as the last of the first years sat quickly under her careful eye. She looked at her daughter, trying to see her as if for the first time and noticed the little Malfoy features. Her hair had lightened, not platinum blonde like Draco and Lilah, but less like her own curly brunette hair. Her blue eyes, at first a dark navy blue, more like Ron and Charlie's eyes had lightened in the last couple of years and became a sea blue. It wasn't quite like Draco's but she could see it now. She had her birth father's cheekbones, high and aristocratic and sometimes she acted like Draco. Especially when she was fighting with her little brother.
"Welcome to your first Transfigurations class. This is one of the more difficult abilities to master, but you will learn if I have to keep each and every one of you after classes every day, weekends included to teach you. It is a very important and necesary part of your magical life." Hermione continued with her first year speech automatically as she kept watching her daughter out of the corner of her eye.
Adrianna felt her mother's attention and wondered why she was so concerned for her. She had been practicing magic since she could walk, most of the time behind her back with Uncle Severus and Uncle Harry. Her mother shouldn't be worried that she'd have a problem with transfiguring anything even this her 'first' time.
"Madame Weasley, what's the difference between being transfigured into an animal and being an animagus?" A girl from Adrianna's house, Amanda Nott, asked without raising her hand.
"Five points from Slytherin for interrupting, Miss Nott. And that is quite easy to explain...." Adrianna stopped listening, having heard this lecture at least five times since she turned eight and could transfigure the garden gnomes in Grammy's garden into statues.
"Miss Weasley! Pay attention. Ten points from Slytherin."
Adrianna scowled at her mother and turned back to her book so her mother couldn't see her angry looks.
Draco walked Lilah down to the main gate, distracted by the events of the night before. If he'd married Hermione, he'd have never had Lilah. Could he still be angry at Hermione, knowing that if he'd chosen her and Adrianna, Lilah would never have been born? If he knew then what he knew now, could he have walked away from Hermione so he could go through the hell he did with Alicia?
"Daddy? Are you alright?"
"Yeah, Baby, I'm fine. I just have a lot on my mind right now. It's my first day, so we need to hurry." He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and guided her down the path. He slowed down when he saw RJ Weasley standing by the gate waiting for Lilah. He refused to look at Draco.
"I'm sorry for what I said, Lilah. I have a bad temper, Mum always tells me. I'll walk down to the village with you, if you want." RJ extended his right hand, his lips turned up in an almost smile. Lilah frowned in apprehension, but extended hers for his handshake.
Draco watched and nodded. Hermione must have talked to her son again this morning. "I'll see you after school, Lilah. Come directly back."
"Yes, Daddy."
"Good day, Mr. Weasley."
RJ scowled at the professor and offered him a surly greeting before turning away and walking towards the village, his daughter in tow. Sighing, he returned to the castle and hurried down to the dungeon. His first class started in half an hour and he already had a line of students waiting outside the classroom. They had been trained well by Professor Snape. He grinned, walked past them and entered without a word.
"Malfoy. How's it going?" RJ asked after she had finally caught up with him. Lilah walked beside him, her backpack slung over one shoulder and her hands stuffed inside her loose jeans. She shrugged and kept walking.
"Hey, I'm sorry about yesterday. Look, we gotta work together. There's something I hafta tell ya." RJ kept right next to her. Although a year younger than Lilah, he was almost as tall as her, having inherited his father's height and long legs. He kept up with her as she ignored him and hurried towards Hogsmeade. “Come on, I’ll tell the guys to let you join the game during recess.” He called as she ran ahead of him.
“Look, Weasley, I don’t want to be here. I want to go home, to America. I don’t want to live in some stupid dungeon, and go to some stupid magic school. I just want to be normal again. Leave me alone!”
RJ sighed as she ran into the school yard and up to the teacher. Fine, if she wouldn’t talk to him, he’d go to someone who was sure to listen to him.
