Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Albus found Draco on the Astronomy tower and sat down next to the boy. Draco didn’t even twitch, staring off into the growing night. Viola flapped her wings, hopping back from the edge of the tower and climbing effortlessly onto Draco’s shoulder. She tilted her head and Albus smiled slightly, running a careful finger over her head, “Supper is about to be served.”

“I am not hungry, Headmaster.”

Closing his eyes for a moment, not realizing how much damage Lupin had done until he’d heard the boy speak. Walls. Draco had them in spades to hide himself mentally and emotionally from harm. And when threatened he hid behind them. And the most telling sign was how he reserved everything and everyone at a distance. He debated with himself for a moment, whether to pick the boy up or not and chose to let Draco come to him, “Draco. You do not have to speak or look at me but I do want you to listen.” He waited and caught the barest of nods, “No matter how anyone feels or what is said, I will believe you. If you are not believed then I will speak to them but you need not...hide like this.”

“I...I am not hiding. I am right here, sir.”

Nodding, “Yes, your body is right in front of me. I can see you clearly. But not what’s inside of you. Not the charming, vibrant boy you have become. He is hidden from me and I’m wondering when I shall see him again.”

Draco slowly lowered his head, his posture softening a bit, “Soon...I...I think...I just...”

Resting a hand gently on his head, “Draco, you’re still so young. You don’t have to go through anything on your own and you certainly don’t have to pretend to be someone else...”

Draco turned, his eyes no longer cold, just sad, “I’m not...I’m just acting...like he taught me to...”

Rubbing his thumb along the boy’s temple, “You could act like yourself...”

Sighing softly, scooting closer but not quite ready to be held yet, “I don’t know how else to act...”

Tapping him under the chin gently, “Now that isn’t true, is it? I’ve seen you in action, son. I believe you’re called the sergeant by some of your students...”

Blushing with a shrug, “Just the Home kids.”

“They learned from you, did they not? Which means they were your students.”

“I suppose.” And he was ready. He leant into his father, sighing blissfully when those reassuring arms wrapped around him and protected what he couldn’t hide. His distance and coldness disappeared, though his father stirred far too soon for his tastes. But Albus was just conjuring up a cushy chair for him to sit in, Draco eagerly climbing into his lap and just enjoyed being held.

Draco staying in the dormitories depended on his sleeping pattern. If he was restless, he went to his room. If he was really tired, he crashed in the dorms where he fell. He had taken the time to learn the names of his dorm mates, six in all. Jonathan, Evan, Peter, Arthur, Harry (named by his parents after the infamous Harry Potter), and Stanley.

Stanley was the curious one, very empathetic to others and always asking questions. He was the one that Draco had grown just a bit attached to. The others he was friendly with, nodding and answering questions, helping them with their work, but Stanley became a tag along with his other friends out to the Quidich pitch. And it’s how he came to find out exactly why his schedule had him down for flying on Saturday because he’d had no intention of attending at first.

Madam Hooch stood in the center of a line of brooms, students on one side or the other. Her mouth quirked when Draco came out, looking very put out but watching to be sure Stanley found a broom. Cassie didn’t look happy either but she’d shown up for the lesson, “Now, I could say that this is your first flying lesson, but for some of you it isn’t. Instead, I am here as an observer...and I believe the Sergeant is taking over...”

Draco’s head shot up, eyes wide while Cassie started jumping in place and clapping, “Oh, this is going to be fun. Scoot over, I’m staying.”

The other firsties looked unsure at one another. He was going to teach all of them at once? Draco squared his shoulders while the twins stood at attention and saluted. He scowled at them, “Anymore cheek and it’s to the stockades with the both of you.”

Alex snapped her heels, “Sir, yes, sir!”

That broke out a fit of giggles. He smirked before turning his attention to the others, “Alright. The inanimate object at your feet is a broom. It is a tool and you are it’s master. You must take control of the situation or the seventh years will walk all over you. Command your broom as you command yourself. The command is up. You must believe it. Say it.”

“Up...”

Draco cocked his head, “What was that? Did you say something? I didn’t hear anything.”

“Up.”

“Hmmm...I thought I heard something...”

Little faces scrunched up, “Up!”

“Are you asking or telling?”

Spines stiffened and got more determined, “Up!!”

“Mean it.”

“Up!!!”

Looking at them, “Say it.”

“Up!!!”

Pointing out his hand, palm down, “Stretch out your hand and command your broom.”

“UP!!!!”

Every broom shot into their owner’s hands and Draco grinned with pride, gripping the handle of a broom with one hand and letting it pull him up off the ground. Just like before he took out his wand and cast a protection charm around the courtyard. Straddling the broom while in the air, looking down at them all and smirking, “Now, the object of this game...is to catch me.” Snickering, “If you can.”

Ginny went running full tilt down the stairs, racing for the door. Harry caught her before she collided with him, “Whoa! Ginny what-...”

“Draco’s teaching the flying class!”

She dodged past him and Harry looked at Hermione before both raced after her. The other Gryffindors
broke out in a mad dash to keep up. They had to see this, having heard about the exploits of the Home kids. Down corridors, they colliding with the Ravenclaws and all hiked up to the Astronomy tower. They were all giggling and talking excitedly to one another, trying to cram themselves into the limited space. Harry and Hermione grinned at one another and knelt down, crawling amongst the legs until they were right in front. They were just in time to see Draco make a mad dive from above, a swarm of first years flying after him, he made a graceful arc, well away from the ground and flattened out his path, looking back to make sure they all followed.

A little Hufflepuff wobbled and Draco cut back almost faster than could be seen, stabilizing her and making sure she had a firm hold of her broom. She nodded that she was okay and he cut to the front again, leading them all on a merry chase through the courtyard and back again.

Harry grinned, “ACCIO BROOM!” In his nimbus came, catching it effortlessly and straddling it, taking off
after Draco, he tagged him and the two grinned at one another.

Draco turned behind on his broom, riding backwards, “This next game is called...Scare Potter!”

Cassie spun out of the group and somersaulted around Draco, the whirling duo crossing Harry’s path. The Gryffindor pulled up short with a gasp and a swear, “Dammit Draco!”

Stanley giggled, “Draco scared Potter, he won.”
