Transient Magic.
CHAPTER 17
Severus Snape stood patiently on the bridge over the loch watching as the unassuming little boat beneath him moored on the side. At length a familiar figure appeared from within the boat and stepped out onto the grassy bank. The figure looked around for a moment before turning and looking directly at Snape. Snape smiled to himself as he began to slow walk down to meet the robed man. It had taken him an entire day to find him, an entire day of watching canal boats lazily sailing up and down the loch system.
“Rumor was that the dark lord’s closest advisor had been released. Should I be privileged you chose to seek me out?” Lucius Malfoy hadn’t changed a bit although his previous self-indulgent lifestyle had taken a battering; it appeared he was still living well.
“As sharp as ever Lucius.” Snape greeted the man coolly as the pair glanced over one another casually.
“Still dating Potter I see.” Lucius bit back as he reached up and poked Severus’ swollen lip and bruised cheek by way of explanation. “You always did enjoy the abusive kind didn’t you?” Snape bit his lip determined not to lose his patience with the blonde. “You better come in less someone sees us.” There was a stagnant silence before Lucius finally invited Snape aboard his boat. Like most wizard homes the boat was deceptively small from the outside, but the crackle of magic as he entered the doorway told Snape the man had expanded it considerably inside to meet his own tastes.
“I’m guessing you know why I’m here.” Snape muttered as he sat down on bench seat while Lucius poured him a brandy. Lucius chuckled darkly as he handed Snape the glass.
“We all do.” By way of explanation Lucius folded back the sleeve of his robe, revealing for Snape’s benefit the bloodied tattoo of the dark mark. “We didn’t see this coming did we?” Lucius laughed darkly as he rolled his sleeve back before sitting down opposite Snape in the large cabin.
“I’m assuming by that statement you’ve done some research already?” Snape knew Lucius had already begun looking into the phenomena, even if he didn’t quite know the meaning of it all yet. Lucius was always one to look out for himself even if that involved sacrificing everyone else around him.
“Indeed,” With a click of his fingers Lucius summoned a house elf and after a hushed whisper sent the elf off to get something. “I’ve been doing some reading into transient magic and it’s lasting effects.” The house elf arrived back a second later balancing a rather large book in its tiny hands. The book was bigger than the house elf, the only visible pieces of elf were its ears and legs sticking out from behind the leather bound tome. Dropping the book on the coffee table the elf waited for more instructions but when Lucius waved him away, it disappeared with a pop.
“The spell Harry used to kill Voldemort you mean.” Severus supplied just to ensure he and Lucius Malfoy was on the same page. Lucius looked up at Severus sarcastically before flipping through the book on the coffee table and pushing it open at a specific page over to Snape.
“You know as well as I Severus, that for that brief fleeting moment the boy came face to face with Voldemort he accessed something unknown. A magic only ever used by those, with too much will to die but facing a death they can not prevent.” Severus nodded silently as he scanned the page Malfoy had opened for him.
“Transient Magic.” Snape muttered as he looked up from the page having read the basics of the idea behind the magic Lucius was referring too. In theory Snape knew how the phenomena was supposed to work. A wizard facing a life or death situation, when there was little hope of them ever producing anything that was likely to save their lives were able for a passing moment access an unimaginably powerful magical pool and thus save themselves. It was a nice fairy tale, that the papers ate up with spoons but Severus had his reservations.
“I shan’t insult your intelligence by reciting the theory, so we’ll just move on to the abnormalities I’ve discovered. Transient Magic is designed to help eradicate the ‘threat’ to the life of the wizard or witch using it. Simplified, Transient Magic defines a ‘threat’ as being another wizard or a beast of some kind, essentially some ‘external threat’.” Severus followed Lucius’ words closely a little confronted by how much thought the blonde had put into his research. “In that definition of threat there is no allowance for the threat being the wizard himself.” In that instant Lucius had lost Snape and the blank expression on the potion masters face was a clear indication. Irritated but not relenting Lucius continued. “What I’m saying is, that perhaps Mr. Potter and our Dark Lord were more closely linked to one another than we realized. So much so that the Transient Magic Harry accessed couldn’t define between the threat, and the victim and thus simply rejoined the two parts back together?” Lucius eyed Snape cautiously as he fell silent, giving the potion master time to ponder on the concept.
“Shit.” At length Severus collapsed back against the bench his hand running over his face in disbelief as he stared at the open book on the table.
“My thoughts exactly.” Lucius muttered as he rose from his seat and fetched the decanter of brandy, intent on refilling both his own Severus glasses.
“The must have taken a lot from each other, when Voldemort had first tried to kill him as a child.” Snape gratefully sipped at his brandy as he leant forward and closed his eyes tightly trying to picture how this monumental cock up could have happened.
“Oh I’d say a fair percentage of their magic was shared, much more than even they thought.” Lucius crossed his legs over casually and sipped from his drink before continuing. “However that’s not the worst of it.” Severus head snapped up sharply to stare at Lucius who looked far to collected about this information than he really should have been. “The prophecy, ‘One must die so the other may live?’.” Snape nodded for Lucius to go on although he dreaded what was coming. “What if that prophecy actually did refer to them rejoining. Neither of them led a full life, Voldemort too evil, Potter too inherently good. If you think about it, they were opposite extremes separately, but together there might be enough balance to create the ‘great’ wizard the prophecy refers to.” Lucius sipped from his brandy and watched as Snape shook his head determinedly.
“Balance?” Snape snapped sharply having seen first hand the so-called balance between Harry and the Dark Lord. “Voldemort’s killing him from the inside out, it’s like Harry’s body is raging a war between two separate entities. There’s no balance, Harry’s loosing and will die.” Severus stood up abruptly from his seat, and began pacing as he rubbed his temple furiously in thought.
“You can’t separate them Snape, they’re meant to be together. The only thing you can do is teach the boy to do is control himself.” Snape stopped pacing and stared at Lucius, something suddenly dawning on him as he stared at the blonde.
“Why?”
“Why what?” Lucius inquired in confusion as he poured himself another brandy.
“Why all this, what’s in it for you?” Lucius smiled darkly at Snape’s comment as he glanced up at the wizard over the rim of his glass.
“Can’t I just help a friend?” Lucius cheekily smiled but Snape shook his head not accepting the answer. Lucius rolled his eyes and flicked his sleeve back on his robe to reveal the dark mark, still faintly burnt into his skin, red and sore. “The same thing that was in it for me when I joined Severus. I want the same thing as you do, still do. Can you imagine the power that boy will have now that he’s whole? Given time his presence will shadow the greats before him, no one life ever matching his own. Don’t you want to be apart of that Severus? Don’t you want to feel it? To know that what he does could change the course of your life and the very history you live in. Surely you can’t deny the sex is better now? The same boyish charms, good looks caring nature but now accompanied with a raw, untamed, wild sexual need that the old Harry Potter was severely lacking.” Severus stared at Lucius, the previous night running through his mind like a whirlwind. Every touch had been a conflict of what he’d come to expect of his partner. Tentative, coaxing, caring kisses had been primal and needy. Gone was the puppy eyes asking for permission before going on but instead there had been unrestrained thrusts, uncaring grunts and thrashing arms. The dark side of Harry Potter had arrived and Severus Snape liked what he owned. Lucius smiled as he watched Snape’s expression, reading instantly the sparkling heat flashing behind the potion master’s onyx gaze. “See Severus, I know you better than you know yourself.” Lucius stood up and walked over to where Severus was standing by the porthole and was staring out at the water. “That or I acknowledge what you refuse to.” Severus stiffened as he felt Lucius press up behind him, the blonde’s arm coming around his waist while he rested his chin on Severus’ shoulder. “We need each other Severus, me, you and our son will always be linked through him, it is in all of our interests that we make sure Mr. Potter learns how to keep his temper.”
“How?” Severus closed his eyes automatically as Lucius pressed a soft kiss to the slither of flesh between his chin and the collar of his robe.
“We teach him how to appease this new side of himself. Teach him how to enjoy the occasional foray into the dark side of wizardry. You said yourself once that the boy was too good to be even remotely normal, so let’s show him how to be bad so that an orderly balance can be established such as it is normal wizards.” Lucius voice was like silk and Severus leant back against the strong firm chest of his once lover. “How is our son by the way?” Flippantly Lucius inquired about Draco, and Severus briefly tensed before Lucius gently massaging hand on the back of his neck lulled him back into relaxation. It was far too easy to fall back into temptation.
“Draco is fine he’s got a……….”Severus’ sentence trailed off into a scream of agony as he buckled and grabbed for his arm. At the same time Lucius had fallen backwards as well, gripping his arm above his dark mark as the pain robbed his body of breath. The pair hissed in pain as they scrambled to get purchase but then as quickly as the shooting fire had come it was gone, leaving two bloodied arms and twin tattoo’s as dark and as raw as the day they’d been first branded into their skin. Shaking Severus stared at his arm before finally glancing up at Lucius who was in a similar state of shock.
“He’s back.” Severus breathed into the silence.
“We’re too late the little fuckers given in to him.” Lucius stood to his feet and grabbed his wand. Severus didn’t even flinch as Lucius opened a cupboard in the back, and tossed him a very familiar black robe and a perfectly white mask.
“We need to get to Draco.” Thinking of what could have happened back at the shop with his son and Harry, Severus was rushing out of the door and onto the bank of the lock. Lucius was at his heels both men completely ignoring the on looking muggles as both apperated mid stride heading for Hogsmeade and into the unknown battle field yet again.
