Chapter 16

Hermione rushed through the halls of St. Mungo's not quite sure where she was headed. All she knew was that Sirius was in trouble and he needed her.

"Excuse me, Miss, you can't go that way!" a medi-witch shouted after her hurrying form.

Hermione ignored her, pressing forward. She needed to find him… she needed to see if he was all right.

"Hermione!"

She skidded to a stop, looking around frantically. She saw Harry waving her towards him. He was saying something, but she couldn't quite understand what he was saying. All she could hear was her heart pounding in her chest.

"Hermione?" Harry asked, noticing the glazed over expression on Hermione's face. "Hermione, are you all right?"

She shook her head, tears filling her eyes. "Where is she?" she pressed. "I need to see him."

Harry reached out and gently touched her shoulder. "I think you should sit down, Hermione. You don't look too good."

She shook her head, her eyes darting around frantically. "I need to see him, Harry." She tried to push past him to search down another corridor.

His arms wrapped around her waist, holding her back. "Hermione, you just can't go wandering through the halls."

Hermione struggled against him. "Let me go!" she screamed, gathering the attention of a few other people. "I need to see him!"

Harry looked down at her. Something was definitely wrong. She was shaking as she pushed against him, trying to get away.

A Healer approached them. Harry recognized him as Sirius' healer. "Is something wrong?"

Harry continued to hold her back. "She doesn't usually act like this." He was becoming increasingly worried.

Suddenly, Hermione fell to the floor. "I can't feel my hands," she whispered, staring at them. "I can't feel them…" Her chest heaved with every breath she took.

The Healer bent down and pressed his hand against Hermione's forehead. "She's freezing."

"But she felt hot in my arms," Harry countered.

"I think she's having some sort of anxiety attack. Let's get her into a room."

Harry nodded. He bent down and scooped Hermione into his arms. She mumbled something, tears pouring down her face.

"Can she take the second bed in room 24?" Harry inquired, following the Healer down the hall.

The Healer Branford nodded. "Is this the young woman Mr. Black has been asking for?"

"Yes," Harry replied.

"Very well. I'll be down to check her vitals momentarily." Healer Branford disappeared into another room.

Harry continued down the hallway. He stepped into the room and immediately brought Hermione over to the bed.

Sirius and Remus ceased their conversation.

"What happened to her?" Sirius asked, trying to sit up. Pain shot through his stomach, causing him to lean back. Remus placed a comforting hand on Sirius' shoulder.

"She had some sort of anxiety attack," Harry murmured, brushing some hair out of her face. "I think the stress of everything going on caused her to go into a panic."

Healer Branford appeared moments later. "I'll just run some diagnostics." He pulled the curtain around the bed so no one could watch.

Sirius wished he could get up to see her. He wriggled in the bed, trying to see if he could sit up.

"Relax," Remus chided him. "If you strain yourself sitting up, you may risk bursting your appendix again. You're still in the sensitive stage of healing."

"But she needs me," Sirius countered.

"She's right there. You'll be able to see her momentarily."

Harry nodded in agreement. "You need to relax, Sirius. Moving around too much will only make it more difficult for you to heal." He looked him over. "Your bones haven't set yet."

Sirius glared at his godson. "This is stupid," he murmured petulantly.

Harry shrugged. "It is what it is… you're lucky nothing more serious happened."

"Is Ron all right?" Sirius asked. He knew the redhead had been hit with a curse during the raid.

"Ron is fine," Harry replied. "They were able to reverse the effects of the spell before it caused permanent damage."

"Good," Sirius whispered. The raid had not gone according to plan. There were more Death Eaters there then they had suspected. The Aurors were outnumbered. Thankfully, they managed to capture them all, but not without some issues. Ron had been cursed. Sirius wished he had been cursed… it would have been more exciting than what really happened to him.

Healer Branford pulled the curtain away, revealing an awake Hermione.

"Are you all right?" Sirius asked worriedly.

Her cheeks turned light pink and she nodded.

"She'll be fine," Healer Branford said. "Just a small anxiety attack. Nothing to worry about." He approached Sirius and read his vitals. "You, on the other hand, need to stop moving around so much. If you let the magic do its work, you'll be out in a few days."

Sirius grumbled something under his breath.

Healer Branford shook his head. "I'll be back to check on you later." He left the room.

"Are you sure you're all right?" Harry asked Hermione. "You worried me for a second there."

Hermione buried her face in her hands. "I'm so embarrassed!" she squeaked.

Sirius let out a chuckle. "Hermione, love, there's no need to be embarrassed. Stuff like that happens to everyone once in a while."

She lowered her hands, peering at Sirius. "You're just trying to be nice."

He shrugged. "Of course I am. Now Remus, Harry, get out. I want some alone time with my lady."

Remus rolled his eyes. "I'll be by later." He stepped outside.

"Send your Patronus if you need anything," Harry added before leaving the room as well.

Hermione tentatively got out of her bed and sat in a chair next to Sirius. "Are you all right?" She reached out and gently touched his face.

Sirius leaned into her touch and closed his eyes. "I'm fine," he answered after a moment. "A few broken bones and some internal bleeding, but I'm on the mend."

Hermione nodded. "What happened?"

Sirius shook his head. "It was stupid, really. Someone shot a curse at me, but I deflected it."

"That's good," Hermione interrupted.

"Well, the force of the spell crashing into the ceiling was too much and the ceiling fell in on me."

"Sirius," Hermione soothed. "You're alive and that's all that matters."

"I didn't mean to worry you."

She shrugged. "It's all right, Sirius. All part of the job."

Sirius watched her for a moment. "I love you."

She fidgeted in her seat. "There's something I need to tell you. Something that the doctor mentioned."

Sirius tried to sit up a little straighter. "What is it? Is something wrong?"

Hermione gave him a small smile. "Turns out I'm pregnant." She had been shocked when Healer Branford mentioned it to her, but she shouldn't have been that surprised. She knew breastfeeding wasn't a safe method of birth control.

When she glanced at Sirius, she saw he hadn't said anything. "Are you all right?" she asked nervously. To be honest, she didn't think it was that big of a deal, but Sirius seemed to think so. "I didn't think it-"

"Shhh," Sirius said, shaking his head. "Nothing is wrong at all, love. I'm just… happy of course." He huffed. "I wish I wasn't hurt so I could hug you."

Hermione laughed. "Well, I think I could give you a small kiss."

"Oh?" Sirius looked hopeful.

Hermione got up and carefully leaned over his body. She gently placed her lips onto his. After they broke apart, the two of them sat there in silence.

After the events of today, Hermione was quite positive she wanted to marry Sirius.
