Chapter Sixteen
Hermione ended up going over to the medical wing to get her next vial of cold cure the following morning, as Severus was already up and out of the rooms. She was in the middle of waiting for the potion when who should walk in, but Ginny Weasley. They both looked at each other for a time before Ginny walked away to one of the cots and sat down. Seeing this Hermione went over and sat across from her.
“What’s wrong?” Hermione asked quietly.
Frowning Ginny asked, “Excuse me? What did you say? I couldn’t hear you.”
Clearing her throat, she asked, “What is the matter?”
“What do you care?”
“I care,” Hermione said wearily. “And before you make a joke at my expense, no I am not doing so to be perfect. I asked because you’re my friend. You may not like me very much at the moment, but you are that.”
Ginny looked at her in disbelief. But that seemed to crumble away as the girl seem to come apart at the seams. Sobbing she curled in on herself, her face buried in her hands. Before she knew it, Hermione was hugging and rocking her.
“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!” she chanted.
“It’s okay,” the older witch whispered.
It wasn’t until a half an hour later that Ginny was laying down with her head in Hermione’s lap that they began to talk.
“I should have been stronger,” Ginny whispered.
“How so?” Hermione asked, stroking the girl’s hair in a motherly fashion. “Ginny, we’re not speaking about rational human beings. They would have tortured you or worse if you went against them.”
“But I-I wasn’t helping anyone! Not like you did,” she said.
“Oh Ginny, you were here more than likely protecting everyone you could as best you could,” Hermione whispered.
“They tried to make me hurt the first year muggle born students,” she breathed, squeezing her eyes shut as if she were trying to block out the images the words brought to mind. “I-I made them fake being hit by the crucio, but the Carrows caught me.”
“That’s genius!” she told her.
Ginny turned her face up towards her. “It was?”
Hermione nodded. “Yes, you saved their lives and most definitely their minds.”
Sitting up she whispered, “I was punished.”
Steadying herself for it, Hermione asked, “How?”
Ginny pulled her legs folded against her chest and just sat there without saying a word. Her blue eyes stared haunted out into nowhere.
“You don’t have to say the words if you don’t want,” Hermione told her. “But I’m going to ask and if I’m correct, all you have to do is nod. Okay?”
Ginny nodded.
“Did they rape you?”
Again Ginny nodded and began crying quietly. “I think I’m pregnant.”

“Feeling any better?” Hermione turned to face Severus with a cold sober expression on her face. “What’s the matter?”
“Yes, I’m physically feeling better, thank you for asking,” she said softly. “Mrs. Weasley brought me over some chicken soup.” Worrying her lower lip she went on to say, “I found out…” She stopped talking as she tried to think of anything to say other than what she must to him. “I have found 14 girls and 7 boys that were raped and/or sodomized during the time that the death eaters took over the school. Of those so far 21 students that we know of, 13 were all under the age of fifteen.” Tears were absently dripping down her face. “And 8 of the girls are pregnant.”
“Merlin,” he muttered, sitting down hard in the chair across from her.
“Severus, I need to ask something and I need you to be truthful with me…”
“I suspected,” he told her. “There was only so much I could do.” He looked into her eyes. “Keeping the students alive was enough to bring me under suspicion several times.”
“I would imagine so,” she breathed. “But word will get out and, anger being blind, the parents will want someone to blame.”
“Are you suggesting that I resign as headmaster even before I begin?” he asked, his voice hard.
“No, that wasn’t what I was saying,” she told him. “Parents will be illogical and angry and they will want justice. There will be no rhyme or reason. Only the need to hurt the person that they see is responsible for their son or daughter being hurt as they were.”
“And you tell me this because?”
“You were in charge of their health and wellbeing at the time these things occurred, you are currently housing one of the most notorious death eaters that ever lived, and you wonder why I’m telling you this?”
“Merlin help me, you’re right,” he sighed, scrapping his hair out of his face. “What are we to do about this?”
“You start with getting Lucius out of the school,” Hermione murmured. “The sooner the better.”
“But…”
“As soon as the parents find out about the rapes, chances are that his life won’t be amount to spit,” she told him. “And well you know it.”
“But he never…”
“I know that and you know that. Merlin help us all, they will more than likely know that as well. But they will see him as a representative of the death eaters. A symbol, if you will, of something they despise,” she told him, as she got up and walked over to him. “But if you’re determined to keep him here, I’ll support you.”
Severus stood up, studying her face intently. “You would do that for me?”
She nodded.
“You hate him.”
“I hate what the man is capable of and what he represented,” she told him. “Alas, I don’t know the man himself well enough to say one way or another if I like or hate…”
“You hate him,” he repeated flatly.
“With a passion,” she replied in a resigned tone.
“A passion?” he asked, leaning all the closer to her. “That is a strong word, Miss Granger. You should be careful how you use it.”
“Really? I must confess it is but a mild interest compared to my other deep desires,” she explained to him.
“Hmm, and they would be?”
“Equal rights,” she told him. “Magical knitting…” Hermione stood up, going up on tiptoe and nipped at his strong jaw, kissing the sting away. “And you.”
“I am only a passion?” he growled against her ear.
“I am a witch of deep and abiding passions, Professor Snape,” she murmured, pressing her breasts to his hard chest just enough to allow him to feel her nipples change under the pressure. “I crave the sound of your voice, the touch of your hand, and your very mind. Is that not enough?”
“For now,” he muttered, claiming her mouth in a demanding kiss.
Melting against each other they never heard Remus as he found them, quietly backed away, and shut the door to her office behind himself as he left.
