Coming to Terms

Coming to Terms

Ginny walked into the study and looked over to Harry who was sitting in his favorite chair. She had just gotten home from a long visit with her parents when Harry had flooed home himself. He had gotten home early and immediately went straight for the fire whiskey. She had thought to go over and speak with him, but when he looked up at her his eyes hard she knew that he needed some time alone. But this time when she went over, she wasn’t going to let him get off so easily.

“I’m a fool,” he said before she got the chance to say a thing.

The breath she had taken to snap some sense into him rushed out and she asked, “Why is that?”

He told her what happened. Everything. And throughout it all, Ginny was next to him listening intently. At one point she took his hand and held it as he was sobbing. When he finished, she rubbed his back as she thought over all the things he had told her.

“I should have been told!” he exclaimed.

“Yes, but do you really blame Hermione for that?” she asked quietly. “It was Professor Dumbledore’s plan. He was the one that instigated it. He was the one that had them all doing things that may not have been the best for them. Merlin! Remus went through hell to be able to keep track of Greyback and his pack. And in the end it’s what got him killed. Do you think Professor Dumbledore gave thought to that?” She shrugged. “I don’t know. But I can say this much, he obviously didn’t think of what would become of Hermione. She’d be a pariah if it ever got out that she was a vampire regardless of her role in the war.” Ginny paused. “I think Professor Dumbledore cared more about the cause than the people involved. Soldiers die, but if the cause wasn’t won…”

“She’s so angry,” he murmured.

“Wouldn’t you be if your best friend has treated you the same as you have her?” she asked gently. “Harry, I asked her years ago what happened. Why didn’t you? Why did you assume anything? You said that she was like a sister to you.”

“Dumbledore was gone,” he breathed. “Voldemort too. The Death Eaters that could be gotten were being taken care of by the Ministry of Magic. There I was so pissed off and ready to fight, but there was no one left to fight. Not really, not anymore. I took it out on her. I shouldn’t have. I told her as much.”

“And?”

“I tried to apologize. She didn’t accept it. Hermione accused me of wanting one in turn.”

“Did you?” He gave a reluctant nod. “Oh Harry.” She stood up and kissed his head. “I’ll leave you be. Something tells me that you need more time to think.”

When she stood up straight to leave he muttered, “I get it. I was an idiot to expect as much. She even told me so.”

“But?”

“I just wish that someone could have let me be a part of what was going on.”

She nodded, but stated, “If wishes were beggars, horses would have a lot of beggars.” But then she frowned. “Or was it…”

Laughing, Harry said, “I know what you meant, luv. And you’re right.” He rubbed his face and muttered, “But how do I fix this mess?”

Smiling she asked, “Don’t you have a link to disconnect?”

Hermione was trying to relax in the bathtub. In truth, she hadn’t felt comfortable in years. She had tried at first to make the best of it, but she had given up on ever finding comfort again. But then it happened. It was like letting go of a breath she had held for over eight years. She rested back and soon found herself wondering what had happened. Why was she so comfortable? When the answer came to her she leapt out of the bathtub and ran over to Severus who was still packing.

“He’s not in my head!” she sobbed. “He’s not…”

He rushed over to her. “What?”

“Harry! He’s not in my head anymore!” She cried against his chest. “Oh Merlin, it feels so good!”

“So what are your plans now that you no longer have him in your head?” he asked quietly, scrapping the wet hair out of her face.

“First, I want to finish my bath,” she told him, walking backwards and pulling him along. “But not alone.”

“That sounds lovely,” he murmured. “And then?”

“I don’t know,” she replied. “A nap sounds good. It’s been a long time since I had a nap.”

Knowing what was to come, he smiled and replied, “As you wish.”

Harry rushed down to the dungeons the next morning, wanting to know if the spell to disconnect the link had worked or not. When he arrived at their rooms, he found them emptied out with a note from Severus Snape.

Dear Mr. Potter,

If you came down here to see if the spell had worked, let me assure you that it has. Thanks to you, Hermione was able to go into the hibernation she has needed to go into for several years now. So there will be no more arguments over the past for some time to come. Take care of you and yours. I will do the same.
