Dragons and Comas
Chapter 17: Dragons and Comas
“Dragons?” Viktor demanded for the fourth time in two minutes.
“Yes, quit worrying,” Harry snapped as he added the last ingredient to the cauldron.
“Harry, its dragons. Hov do you expect me to overcome a dragon?” Viktor pleaded.
Harry turned, giving his friend a baleful glare. “I expect you to trust that I know what I’m doing.”
Viktor seemed only slightly remorseful for his outburst. “But vhat are you doing?” he asked.
Harry stared blankly at him, then glanced to the cauldron then back to Viktor. “You don’t know…? Oh, I suppose you wouldn’t. I’m making a potion that will mask your appearance from dragons. Since dragon’s eyes are crap they use their sense of smell to find enemies, this will completely obliterate your smell. All you have to do is acio it from the castle and you can do whatever you please.”
“Truly? You are a handy one to keep around,” Viktor muttered, eyeing the cauldron as though it were the savior reborn.
“Right,” Harry said, not looking at his friend as he proceeded to place doses of the potion into vials. “I’ll set them out on a table by an open window so they don’t break when you acio them.”
“And how vill you handle the dragons?” Viktor asked.
“I can command them,” Harry replied offhandedly.
“You can vhat?”
“I can command them. It’s something that came with being half turned, rather like the wings. I just seem to have a knack for languages…and creatures listen when I speak…I’ve even wondered if it isn’t due to some pheromone or the like.”
“Dev,” Viktor said, bringing Harry from his musings. “That is veird.”
Harry shrugged through his smirk. “Yeah, but it’s useful.”

It was the day of the first task, only three hours till its start. Harry, Draco, Blaise, Pansy, Hermione, and Viktor were all crammed into Severus’s chambers. Severus had called them a quarter hour ago to tell them Ginny had begun to stir, and she had kept it up, moaning and writhing in her unconscious state.
“I can’t watch this,” Pansy finally shouted, tears streaking her cheeks. Blaise moved to the back of her chair, laying a hand on her shoulder as she huddled upon herself, sobs racking her body. “It’s my fault,” she muttered.
“No,” Ginny moaned. For a moment Harry assumed this was yet another of her pained groans but he saw her eyes fighting to open. “No…not…”
“Hush love,” Harry said, already at her side. His hands pulling her upright so she could sit up. Her eyes fluttered open, their blank stare scanning the room.
“Pansy?” she whimpered, her hand twitching as though attempting to move,
Pansy let a horse cry escape as she jumped from the chair and stumbled to Ginny’s side, her arms embracing the smaller girl.
“I’m here, I’m here Gin, I’m so sorry. I never meant it. I’m so, so sorry,” She sobbed into Ginny’s shoulder.
“Not…your…fault,” Ginny whispered, her words low and gasped. “I…I can’t….where…is…Blaise?”
“Ginny, I’m right here, can you see me?” Blaise asked, hunkering down so his face was at eye level with hers.
“I….no…where?…where is…everyone?”
“Hush, it’ll be okay,” Harry said. “Your eyes are just strained.”
“But…I can’t…see! Harry!…Harry help?”
“Shh,” Harry whispered. A sudden, overpowering need to help the girl filled him. He fought the urge, as hard as he could. “You’ll be okay, you’ll get used to it Gin.”
“No,” she cried, her glassy eyes scanning the room in jerky movements. “No, please…fix it…please…Harry?”
“I can’t,” Harry whispered. The weight of those words was felt by everyone, as everyone knew the lie as he spoke it.
“You…can…” Ginny whispered.
“No,” Blaise and Hermione said in unison.
“I cannot Ginny,” Harry told her, his fingers itching to act even as his mind refused.
“Please, please…Harry, please,” Ginny begged, her hands, still weak, fumbling to find his face.
Pansy snatched Ginny’s hand, holding them still as she said, “Ginny, think. Harry, everyone knows the cure for you would be worse than being blind. That’s not for you, love. You’re not meant to be a vampire.”
“How did you…” Blaise began but Pansy was not done.
“Harry is a good sort, we both know that. But he’s also powerful. In your state, changing you might break your mind. It might destroy Ginny…at least this way; I know you’re still the girl I love. Please Ginny, don’t ask that of Harry. Every time you ask his will breaks more, so stop, please, for me if not anyone else?”
There was a long silence as Ginny began to tremble from exhaustion and fear. Finally she turned her head towards Pansy, her eyes glassy not only with blindness but with tears. “Just don’t leave?” she whispered.
“Never,” Pansy promised and enfolded Ginny into her embrace.
It took no more than a few moments before Ginny had fallen back asleep.
“You should all go. You need to get ready for the task. I’m going to stay with her,” Pansy told them.
They lingered a bit longer but eventually did as Pansy had said and left the two girls alone on Severus’s couch.
~~~~~~~~
Harry forced himself to focus as he heard the shot ring out. It was his turn to face a dragon and he needed to have a clear head to do it. Ginny would be okay, he needed to focus.
Harry exited the tent, surveying the grounds. The other contestants had all gone already. From the sound of things Viktor had been the most impressive of the lot as he was the only one to avoid being hurt. That, at least, put a smile on Harry’s lips.
The dragon he was to face was laying, chained, to the ground in the center of the arena. Harry slowly approached it. It regarded him warily, its slit eyes wandering over where it knew he was.
When he was still a good thirty yards away the dragon leaned back on its hind legs, a rawer reverberating from its throat.
Harry felt the proclamation of its power and status fade before he replied. Though he could not produce a sound like the one the dragon had just made he could still get his point across. Making the sounds as growl like as he could Harry announced his status and desire. With a flick of his hand he reduced the barriers holding in his vampire essence just enough so the dragons keen nose could pick up the sent.
Another deep growl to let the dragon know he was only passing and would attack only if provoked led to the beast using a move much like a reprimanded dog. It settled on all fours then plopped onto its stomach, its head resting on its forefeet.
Harry made a sound that was equal to something between “truce” and a gesture of good will before heading up the slope. He found the egg he needed. It had a spell placed on it to make it smell like the dragons own eggs instead of the odd gold contraption it was. Removing the spell Harry lifted the egg and retreated.
It was all over in less than seven minutes. The stands were quite as death as Harry exited the arena. Then a loud roar of human joy shook the ground. Harry spotted Viktor sitting on the ground by the judges table. As their eyes locked they both burst out laughing. So much for the thing being difficult.
