Chapter Fifteen:
The pillow beneath Alyssa’s head was soaked through with tears.
Her first class ward was eerily silent and a sliver of moonlight bled through among the shadows.
She was curled on the bed, still awake even two hours past midnight.
She was so afraid of being alone.
She was completely terrified by the idea of being left unwanted.
She couldn’t let herself think that Draco didn’t want her. She couldn’t- if she did, she was scared that she might really fall apart, into so many pieces she would never be able to be whole again. She took so long to put her heart back together again after that last torture she was put through.
She couldn’t lose anything else.
She had already lost their baby, the one thing she thought would bring them together. She had already lost so much. There was nothing else she had to give to fate.
She wanted to be with Draco.
He reminded her so much of the-man-whom-she-wanted-to-forget-but-never-will.
The man who turned her into who she was.
The man who made her whole then snapped her into two.
The man who haunted her every second of the day- a ghost that she couldn’t shake off.
The man whom she desperately wanted to love and wanted to hate.
Alyssa kneaded her eyes with her fists, trying to stem the flow of tears, her head pounding and her eyes stinging.
She swung her legs over the bed and got to her feet. She spun around in a slow circle and there- in that dark corner- there he was.
She wanted to cry out in anger, cry out in grief, and cry out in happiness.
She wanted him to stop haunting her, yet she needed even this ghost of him to stay alive, so she could cling onto this little bit of him.
She whispered his name into the night. She walked slowly towards him and raised her hand to touch his face.
Her hand came into contact with the solid wall and she gasped- he had vanished in front of her. Her eyes welled up, her body giving way as her knees folded, landing her on the tiled floor. No.
No. No. No.
Why did everybody always had to leave her in the end?
~
She remembered Draco’s eyes glazing over a minute after he drank the drugged alcohol.
She remembered apparating the both of them into the hotel room she had checked into.
She remembered picking up the glass filled with the potion she had brewed- the one to guarantee her pregnancy- and drinking it.
She remembered pressing her lips to his, intoxicated and wanting to drug herself to numbness in that kiss.
She remembered how she had removed her clothes and told him to remove his. Confused and drugged, he did.
She had pushed him onto the bed and lay down beside him, kissing him until her head spun and her eyes stung from tears she had been holding in forever.
She remembered their hands roaming over each other’s body as he entered her.
She remembered screaming out as her climax hit her hard- screaming out his name and Draco’s together.
She remembered how he closed his eyes as he came, groaning out some other girl’s name over and over again- Hermione.
She remembered falling asleep next to him.
She remembered waking up and knowing there was no turning back.
She was already who she had become.
~
Draco’s mouth was dry as he entered Alyssa’s ward.
She was sitting up, her face blank. Her eyes were red and swollen, her lips pale.
“Alyssa?” He said carefully.
She turned around, her eyes lighting up. “Draco?”
“Are you ok?” He said awkwardly.
“I’m fine but…” she said quietly. “The baby.”
“I already know,” Draco said. “My father told me. He was livid.”
“I’m so sorry,” she said shakily. “I never meant to.”
“Alyssa, I really don’t know what to say,” Draco sighed, sinking into the chair by her bed. He was silent for a moment then he said, “Alyssa, I know that you now that I don’t love you.”
Alyssa gasped and whimpered. “Please don’t do this to me now, Draco. What I need most now is for you to love me.”
“Alyssa, I can’t,” Draco pleaded. “I don’t love you. I tried, God, I tried but I can’t.”
“No, you love me, you just don’t know it yet!” she shrieked. “We’re getting married. I’m your wife, you have to love me.”
“Alyssa, I may be your husband, but I will never love you,” Draco said in exasperation.
“No! You love me! You have to love me! I can’t lose you!” Alyssa screamed, sobbing wildly.
“Alyssa, you won’t lose me,” Draco said gently.
“I won’t?” Alyssa stopped crying and stared up at him hopefully.
“Because you never had me in the first place,” Draco said, standing up to leave.
“Don’t leave me, Draco, please! I’ve already had enough people leaving me alone and I can’t stand to be alone another time,” Alyssa snatched his arm, clinging onto it helplessly.
“Alyssa,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “I’ll give you anything, but not my love, because someone else already has it.”
“Then you can take it back from her!”
“Alyssa, you’re being ridiculous.”
“SHUT UP! I’m not being ridiculous! I’m not!” Alyssa screamed as Draco wrestled away and strode out of the door, leaving her alone once more, screaming her heart out.
They always left her in the end.
It was always the same.
~
Pansy looked up impatiently from her coffee and Loki rolled her eyes.
“Come on, he’s going to be here soon, stop looking around,” Loki chided.
“I’m not looking around,” Pansy said haughtily, her eyes sweeping to the door again.
Harry snorted in amusement. “Yeah, of course you aren’t.”
Draco appeared at the entrance of the café and made his way to their table, nodding curtly at Harry.
“Hello, Malfoy,” He said, sitting down. “What’s up, Pans?”
”Look, I need you to tell me all you remember on the day you slept with Alyssa,” Pansy said.
“What? Why?” Draco frowned.
“Just tell me you idiot!” Pansy snapped.
“Okay, fine!” Draco ordered a cappuccino and clasped his hands together and frowned again, deep in thought. “It was Friday.”
“Yes?” Loki leaned forward in anticipation, her gaze catching his intently, coaxing him to open up.
“I just walked Hermione home- we went on a ate before. It was maybe ten, ten thirty when I reached pitchfork. The music was bloody loud as usual and it was packed. Everyone was dancing. It was a long time since I had a drink, because Hermione hates it. So I was pretty happy, after seeing Hermione and all, so I decided to order some vodka and drank up.
I drank quite a lot, but I was still pretty sober. I was a little dizzy but I could still do you an essay in half an hour. Then maybe midnight, Alyssa appeared. She told me her name and she was very pretty, wearing this little red number. She asked me for a dance and I was, what the heck, why not? So I got up and we danced.
So we danced for a while. Then she paid for a glass of vodka and said I could have it. So I drank and then I guess I don’t really remember what happened after that.”
“What about after everything?” Loki asked.
“I woke up and I was naked. She was next to me and she was naked too. I panicked and I stood up and put on my clothes. We were in this hotel and the whole damn room was stinking of sex and I felt fucking sick. I left her a note and left. I went home and slept. When I woke up, I vomited twice in disgust and I was bloody terrified of what would happen.” Draco sighed. “Yeah that’s about all.”
Harry swallowed. “I… know that you love Hermione.”
“I do, I fucking do more than anything else,” Draco whispered harshly.
“Draco, I promise, I’m going to help you. There has to be something wrong here… you couldn’t have just slept with her like this, something must have happened…” Pansy insisted.
“Pansy, I wish more than anyone else that this isn’t true but it is, alright?” Draco said through gritted teeth.
“No, Draco, nothing is black and white, not love, not this, not anything,” Pansy said, standing up and grabbing her bag.
“Pansy,” Draco stood up, grabbing her elbow. “Please. I’m just really stressed, ok? Alyssa just lost the baby…”
Loki narrowed her eyes. “She did?”
“She fell down the stairs.” Draco sighed. “I don’t know what to do… I’ve tried everything- I told her I don’t love her and she still doesn’t want to let go. There’s nothing I can do. I don’t want to be the bad guy here, ok? I have to be responsible.”
“What about Hermione?” Harry asked.
“Hermione,” Draco rolled her name around his tongue lovingly, like a piece of delicious candy. “I will love her, like I always have. Nothing will change that.”
