Chapter XVI: Chasing Hera Malfoy

Chapter XVI: Chasing Hera Malfoy

09/24/1996
Lucius searched the streets for Hera, though he knew he wouldn’t be able to find her on his own. She could be anywhere. He needed help. He needed Draco. Draco!, he thought; he was the key to Hera. He wouldn’t help him to get to her… that was for sure. But if he owled him saying Hera had escaped and was nowhere to be seen, he would freak out and go find her. He knew there was a special bond between his son and daughter, so he guessed Draco would be able to reach her, thus, lead him to her.

He needed to go to Hogsmeade; somewhere he would see Draco as he left the castle on his broom, to go after him. He went back to the Manor to get his Firebolt, Abîme, the owl they used when they didn’t want attention drawn to the bird, and a pair of omniculars he had bought at the World Cut. He wrote a short note to Draco, desperately telling him about her escape and put it in his pocket to send it later.

Lucius got on his broom and went straight to Hogsmeade, not needing to follow the train track, since he, unlike Draco and Harry, did know how to get there. The rain was finally stopping, making it a most suitable night to fly. It only took him an hour and a half to get to the town. The darkness was beginning to dissipate; he didn’t have much time.

He gave the note to Abîme and let her go. Lucius watched her fly away, but instead of going to Hogwarts, she flew the other way. It didn’t take him long to put two and two together, and was terribly infuriated when he realized his own son had released her, and, by doing it, putting the family into a greater risk than he had in his whole life. He didn’t think Draco would have the courage to pull such a thing, turning his back to his family. What had he done to get children as ungrateful as his?

He jumped on his broom and followed the owl. As soon as he found his son and daughter, he’d make them pay.

Draco was beginning to get tired of flying. Between the lack of sleep he had gotten lately, how hard it was to fight the wind and Hera’s weight, it was nearly impossible for him to keep his broom straight. He was hardly paying any attention to where he was going and was almost knocked off the broom by a grey owl.

‘Abîme!’, Draco screamed in shock. Harry looked at him intrigued and then at the owl. ‘Harry, this is my family’s owl!’

‘What?! But… shouldn’t it be coming…?’

Draco stopped in the air and took the roll of parchment. His eyes opened widely as he read his father’s message.

‘Draco, your friend has escaped. I can’t find her anywhere. Get out of school immediately and help me locate her before something terrible happens’, Draco read out loud. ‘He knows she’s gone! I thought he wouldn’t find out yet! And the owl… We can’t go back to Hogwarts, now. I think my Father’s at Hogsmeade!’

‘No, he’s not! Look!!!’, Harry yelled, pointing at a small figure flying towards them.

‘FUCK! Hurry, we need to get as away from him as possible.’

They changed the direction abruptly and flew as fast as they could, but Lucius was getting closer.

‘What’s going on, Draky?’, Hera asked as he woke up.

‘Father knows you got away and now he’s chasing us! How come you didn’t see this coming?! Why didn’t you?!’, he yelled nervously.

‘I’m sorry, Draco… I didn’t know this would happen… I just didn’t!’, Hera cried desperately.

‘It’s… it’s not your fault. We’ll just have to wish for the best then.’

‘Draco! Go faster!!’, Harry shouted.

‘I can’t! It’s too difficult to carry Hera along!’

Draco looked over his shoulder and for an instant, he saw his father aiming his wand at him, and then a flash of yellow light hit him on the back. He screamed as he was knocked off his broom and tried to hold on to the broom with one hand and Hera, was now crying even harder, with the other.

‘Harry! Help!’, Draco screamed with his eyes closed. ‘Take Hera!’ He was relieved when he felt her weight being taken away, but when he opened them he saw his father flying away with her. ‘NO!’

He lost the grip on his broom and begun to fall down so fast the air hurt him. Harry grabbed him, but the broom was still falling and it would smash into pieces as soon as it touched the floor.

‘Accio!’, he yelled, and the broom went back up, dragged by Harry’s charm. It stopped beside them and Harry helped him get on it again.

‘Remember me to thank you for that, later’, Draco said, his face paler than ever.

They looked for Lucius around and saw him heading East, too far away for them to stop him, but not nearly enough for them to let him escape.
