the ball

Thanks for the reviews, Nightshade, Cherie, Angel, Juri, and Anon, and anyone else I might have missed from the last couple days.

Anon, that used to drive my best friend nuts, too. I’ve never been able to use seen and saw the correct way, no matter how hard my teachers tried, lol. Sometimes, I’d mix them up on purpose to just to irritate the friend I was talking about cause she would ALWAYS correct me. We were a perfect team in Journalism class and writing on the school newspaper. She’d always correct my grammar, and I’d always correct her spelling, lol. Which, I know sometimes I misspell words in here, like you mentioned Breath and Breathe. That’s the way my word processor is. It’s not set up for grammar, but spelling, and since breath is the correct spelling of a word, it doesn’t correct it, lol.

Anyway, thanks again for the reviews, here’s the next chapter.

The next few weeks flew by with a rush of activities. There were the classes themselves, homework for said classes, plus the trips to Hogsmede for the buying of dress robes and whatnot for the upcoming Halloween dance. Normally, they just had a nice Halloween feast; but Dumbledore felt that the students needed something to brighten their spirits and some sort of award for all the jobs well done during the war.

Two days before Halloween found Harry, Ron, Ginny, and Hermione at a shop in the magical town near Hogwarts searching for costumes, or dress robes, which ever they preferred, for the night of the dance. Harry and Ron decided they wanted to wear dress robes, not at all comfortable, or even all that knowledgeable, about most of the costumes on display in the shop windows; most of which were from Muggle fairytales and movies that neither had heard of, let alone seen. Ginny and Hermione decided they wanted to take the time to get the materials they would need, and design their own costumes. What, with being, witches, they only need a few spells and they could have the costumes ready in just a couple hours.

Splitting up, Ron and Harry went to the robe shop, while Hermione and Ginny went looking through the different shops looking for ideas and materials. They agreed to meet back at The Three Broomsticks in one hours’ time to have a butter beer before heading back up to the school. Surprisingly, everyone got all their shopping done in the allotted time without any mishap. Ron eternally grateful for his older brothers, the twins, for loaning him a few galleons so he didn’t have to go in those ridiculous maroon robes again.

Walking back up to the castle, Ginny and Hermione had a good laugh about the boys being relieved that they didn’t have to ask someone to go with them to the dance, remembering how they were for the last ball that was held at the school. Dumbledore took pity on the poor fools and said that you just had to come, and if you felt like dancing, you could ask someone at the ball.

The Great Hall was decorated with the usual Halloween theme. Candles and jack-o-lanterns hung from the enchanted ceiling, giving the hall an eerie effect as the shadows from the carved pumpkins danced on the walls. Hagrid’s usual giant pumpkins lined the front of the head table. Bats dipped and swerved over and around the students. Ghosts, ghouls, and goblins floated and moved around trying to scare unwary students. Vampires even paced before the tables, flashing fangs when they smiled devilishly.

With the feast coming to an end, Dumbledore excused the students so they could go and get ready for the ball. They should be back in exactly one hour. Upon hearing this, Ginny dragged Hermione away and up the stairs to her room.

Once in the room, Ginny sat Hermione down in the chair.

“You said I can do your hair and make up and I’m not about to let you get out of it.”

Hermione sighed. “Fine. But don’t over do it, okay.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t.”

“I don’t see why I need on make-up.” Hermione mumbled. “I’m going to have a mask on. No one is going to see my face anyway.”

“Well, you never know. Some prince charming might come and sweep you off your feet. And he can’t very well give you a kiss good-night with that mask on.”

Hermione closed her eyes and tried as hard as she could not to blush. She was thinking of one certain prince charming in particular that she wouldn’t mind giving her another kiss. She sat patiently while Ginny performed her magic on her. Once she was done, Hermione got up to go get dressed while Ginny got her own self ready.

Once dressed, they made their way back down to the great hall, where Harry and Ron were waiting for them. Back inside, they found a small table near the back to sit and wait for the dance to commence. Everyone quieted when Dumbledore stood.

“Good evening, students and teachers. Welcomed guests. This evening if for fun, relaxation, and celebration. We’ve had very little to celebrate over the last few years, and I say it’s about time that we do. So, without further ado, let the party begin.” He waved his wand at the instruments that had been scattered along behind the head table. They immediately began to play an upbeat song. It took some coaxing, but the students finally filled out onto the floor and began to dance.

The first few songs were upbeat , fast, and made for just about everyone. Then came the slow song. Harry asked Ginny to dance, and Ron accepted the invitation from a sixth year Ravenclaw. Hermione went and sat down at their table, turning down the few offers she had gotten.

A few minutes into the song, tapping her feet along to the rhythm, Hermione looked up to see Draco Malfoy standing in front of her.

“What’s the matter, Mudblood, no one want to dance with a mixed breed mongrel like you.”

Remus Lupin stood just outside the great hall, not really sure what he was doing there. For some insane reason, Albus had insisted that he attend. The only reason he could think of was to torment him with having to the love of his life in the arms of someone else. But of course that wasn’t the reason. Albus had no idea how he felt about Hermione.

Taking a deep breath, he entered the hall. He glanced around, not really looking for anyone in particular, he told himself, but once his gaze swept the entire hall, he was disappointed at not finding her. He could smell her though, so he knew she had to be there somewhere. Taking a longer look around, he spotted someone sitting in the corner by herself. He wondered why she wasn’t dancing with anyone. Possibly the boys were afraid to approach her, he mused. She was so beautiful, she took his breath away. He was sure he forgot to breathe while watching her.

Her hair was piled up on top of her head in a complicated twist, with a crown of her honey-rich curls rioting about, a few tendrils framing her face. He couldn’t see her face because of the gray mask she wore. But he could see from where he was that it sprouted out from her face like the wings of an angel, glittering with silver sequence. His eyes traveled down her body to take in the rest of her outfit. He could see what looked like actual wings rising from behind her shoulders, which were bare. She wore a strapless from fitting dress, that he could had a slit in it that ran up to mid-thigh, the same color as her mask. Taking a closer look, just the top of the dress was form fitting. Below her waist, it spread out behind her like a silver, glittering pool.

He began walking toward her, not sure how he got his feet to move. If Dumbledore was going to make him be here, the least he could do was try and have a pleasant conversation with her. Some one cut him off, getting to her before he did. He stopped at first, waiting to see if she would accept his offer to dance, until he seen her eyes narrow through her mask. He crept closer and caught the words, ‘mongrel like you.’

Growling, he stepped forward. “Mister Malfoy, I believe you have over stayed your welcome. Please move along before I speak to the Headmaster about your abysmal behavior.” The low growl came out with his words. Malfoy stiffened, then turned on his heel and left. Remus wanted to go after him and rip his throat out. He took a few deep breaths to get his temper back under control. He looked at Hermione to see hurt shining in her eyes. That got his temper back up. Before he could act on it, Hermione touched his arm lightly.

“Dance with me?” She asked softly. She didn’t want him to get into trouble and thrown into Azkaban for killing the spoilt brat. Nodding his head, he lead her onto the dance floor, just as the song ended, going into another slow song.

He drew her into his arms, placing his hands low on her waist to reveal that the dress was backless. She shivered under his touch. Placing her hands on his shoulders, she leaned her head against his chest.

I could stay awake just to hear you breathing,
Watch you smile while you are sleeping,
While you are far away and dreaming,
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender,
I could stay lost in this moment forever,
Where a moment spent with you is a moment I treasure,

I don't want to close my eyes, I don't want to fall asleep,
Cause I miss you baby, And I don't want to miss a thing,
Cause even when I dream of you, the sweetest dream will never do,
I still miss you baby and I don't want to miss a thing

He pulled her closer, sighing as she snuggled closer still.

Lying close to you feeling your heart beating,
And I wondering what you are dreaming,
Wondering if it's me you are seeing,
Then I kiss your eyes and thank god we're together,
I just want to stay with you in this moment forever and forever forever

He placed a gentle kiss on the top of her head. His fingers making smoothing circles on her low back.

I don't want to close my eyes, I don't want to fall asleep,
Cause I miss you baby, And I don't want to miss a thing,
Cause even when I dream of you, the sweetest dream will never do,
I still miss you baby and I don't want to miss a thing

And I don't want to miss one smile,
I don't want to miss one kiss,
I just want to be with you right here with you,
Just like this, I just want to hold you close,
I feel your heart so close to mine
And just stay here in this moment,
For all of the rest of time

I don't want to close my eyes, I don't want to fall asleep,
Cause I miss you baby, And I don't want to miss a thing,
Cause even when I dream of you, the sweetest dream will never do,
I still miss you baby and I don't want to miss a thing.

When the song ended, he held her tightly, not wanting to let her go. She lifted her head and looked up at him. Soft wonderment written on her face. Before he could make a fool of himself and embarrass her, or himself, Dumbledore came over to them, that twinkle back in his eyes.

“Ah, wonderful dance, is it not?”

“Um, yes professor.” Hermione said, drawing her eyes, and herself away from Remus. “Thank you for having it. If you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll head back on up to the common room. Good-night, Profs.”

She walked away, without looking back at either of them. But she could still feel Remus's gaze on her the whole way.

Okay, That's it. I think I got the formatting fixed. We'll see once I get it posted again. Had to go back and edit again, cause somehow it posted parts of the fic again at the end, lol. Oh, forgot to add, when I first posted this, but the disclaimer for the song used. It's not mine. I'm not making any money off it. It's called I don't want to close my eyes, by Aerosmith. I just borrowed it for this chapter.
