Hermione and Ronnie spent the whole day in the dungeons playing games and cleaning. After lunch, she put him down for a nap and decided to take one herself.

“Mum,” a little girl said. “Can you hear me?”

“Yes, dear, I hear you,” came Hermione’s voice. “Where are you?”

A little black haired girl appeared before Hermione. “Hi, Mum.”

Hermione took her hand and they began walking. Suddenly, they were outside Hogwarts and the gates had been blown open. “NO!” Hermione said. “This isn’t going to happen, not here, not now.”

The little girl patted her mother’s hand. “It’s ok, Mum; I’m going to show you something.”

Somehow they were both outside all of the carnage and the fighting that was going on. Hermione watched in horror as she ran from Ron to Harry. “Mum, not there, watch here…”

As the little girl pointed, Ron suddenly appeared in front of them. He didn’t say a word to either, but only took the little girl’s hand. They lead Hermione to the Gryffindor tower. Then, Hermione realized what she was watching. She saw herself reading a book, half heartedly watching Ron and Harry play wizard chess. “We’re in first year!”

“Yes,” the little girl answered.

They took Hermione through every major event that the trio had ever been through. They watched the three of them narrowly escape from Fluffy. She saw her own image after taking the polyjuice potion. The little girl pointed to the rescue of Buckbeak and the death of Sirius. Hermione’s first kiss, wedding, and even Harry’s and Ron’s funerals. Ron only smiled and looked at the little girl with a knowing look. “I don’t understand,” Hermione finally said after watching the broken bits of her life.

Ron walked off when she spoke, but he waved at the two of them. The little girl spoke, “Though those that you love are no long with you in body that does not mean they aren’t with you.”

The little girl touched Hermione’s growing belly and then touched her heart. It warmed and filled her heart with joy.

She woke suddenly with Ronnie looking at her from the door. The little boy smiled, “It was Sophie, wasn’t it? She told me to come in here, you know.”

She got up and asked Ronnie if he wanted to go on a trip. The little boy never turned down going somewhere. They went into Hogsmeade to buy Severus a Yule gift or two. She bought him several books on potion ingredients and herbs. She also bought him a new quill. Ronnie thought Severus also needed some invisible ink, so she got that to be from the boy. Fred, she thought rolling her eyes.

When Severus got home, she already had the gifts wrapped and under the tree. He did not notice because he was in much the same shape he had been the day before. After emptying the contents of his stomach again, Hermione made him drink the same potion from the night before. She repeated the massage and he was again asleep.

The next week went much the same way. He’d get sick, get a massage, and go to sleep, only to not want to get up the next day. The day of the Yule ball was different, though. Severus woke up a pale shade of green and was sick most of the day. He finally found an anti-nausea potion strong enough to keep him from being sick.

It was the night of the ball and though Severus was no longer vomiting up his toenails, he was still nervous. He sat there in his best robes waiting for Hermione to finish getting dressed. He gulped down one glass of absinthe after another trying to prepare himself for what he was about to do. Hermione was breath taking when she appeared out of the bedroom. The front of her gown had a sheer green silk overlaying on top of dark forest green satin. It had an empire waist and a low V-neck. As Snape gazed at her, he noticed a new necklace draped around her slender neck. Her neck looked very long and delicate with the neck of the dress and her hair pulled up. She did a twirl for him. The dress did not have much of a back, either. He took notice of the tattoo that twisted down her back.

So few times had he paid much attention to it. It was a vine of roses and ivy. To the untrained eye, it was simply a beautiful picture of flowers and greenery. He saw the names it inscribed as it twisted down along her spine. The ‘golden trio’, Snape thought bitterly. Not any more, his mind echoed. The three of them, on graduation night, decided that they wanted to do something to always remind them of the other two. Harry and Ron both went with a vicious looking lion inscribed with the three names in different place. Hermione wanted something a little more feminine. She chose hers and had the artist draw it out to her specifications. Snape had never seen anything so beautiful in his life. It was nothing like the dark mark that still showed faintly on his wrist.

“Severus?”

He snapped quickly back to reality as she said his name a third time. “Are you sure you want to do this, Love?”

He smiled and stood. Severus put his hand on her growing belly and replied silkily, “I really do Hermione.”

“You do realize that this dress hides nothing of my state, don’t you? You smell like absinthe, are you drunk?” she asked as he rubbed her stomach.

He stood up and turned her toward him. It was at this point that she saw the flush of his face and knew that he’d had a bit too much to drink. “I’ve had a glass of absinthe, seven actually, but before I had even a sip, I thought I was going to throw up thinking about going to this thing. I hate formal events. I hate having to be around those little monsters when it’s not on my terms.”

“In other words, you don’t want them to see you with me?” she asked, feeling hurt that he’d have to get drunk to be seen with her.

“No,” he said, “I don’t want them to see how beautiful you really are and wonder why you are with me. That and I know you are going to want to dance. I’m a bit more graceful once I’ve had a drink to loosen up.”

Hermione was filled with relief. “You don’t worry about those students. You keep your eyes right here,” she said pointing to herself.

He smiled at her. “You’re right. Shall we be off to the Great Hall?” he asked sticking out his arm for her to take.

No one had been allowed into the Hall for the Yule Ball when they arrived. It was not long until about 200 pairs of eyes were fixed on their potion\'s master. His hair was pulled back in a low ponytail and with the flush in his cheeks, the students wondered if he was ill having so much color to his usual pale complexion! Others noticed his crushed velvet dress robes in dark green, not black, his customary color. Still others murmured about the platinum band he wore. As the door opened to the Great Hall, the students were all engrossed in their whispers about the potion’s master and his ‘date’ to notice that they’d finally opened. He and Hermione stepped forward to wade through the sea of students and make their way to the head table, for the staff. Hermione heard snatches of whispers as she passed, “Married? Who’d want…” and “Is she pregnant?” and “…why he’s been so different!!” were some of the whispers she heard.

When they arrived at the head table, Dumbledore greeted them both, a handshake for Severus, and a kiss on the cheek for his wife. Severus leaned in and whispered something to Dumbledore before he let go of his hand. The older man shook his head and smiled, eyes twinkling as always.

The ball was called to order, and before Dumbledore let everyone eat, he made one last announcement. “I want to make one last announcement,” he called out. “I’d like everyone to congratulate Hogwart’s potion’s master, Severus Snape, and his wife, Mrs. Hermione Snape on the upcoming addition to their family.” With that, Dumbledore and all of the staff of Hogwarts stood and began clapping. Most of the students looked at each other in disbelief, but soon stood up and cheered. Slytherin table eventually got the loudest.

Snape stood up, taking his wife’s hand, and bowed. Hermione merely blushed and nodded her head. Once the wild applause subsided, Dumbledore said, “Let’s tuck in!”

The happy couple was met with many congratulations and well-wishes from the students. They danced many dances and more times than not, the students would simply stop and watch them. There was a light in the eyes of the husband and wife that could not be quenched. Every girl at the ball sighed when she looked into their faces. Most of the boys wanted to vomit. The evening was a huge success.
