In the Eyes of the Enemy- Chapter Sixteen Life and Loss

“Ginny, I’m not going to say anything.”

Hermione glared at her young aunt. “But Hermione if you’re worried about what’s going to happen when school’s over. Why don’t you just ask?” Ginny frowned back at Hermione.

She simply replied, “I asked him over a month ago and he said we’d figure it out when the time comes. This baby will be here in four months. When will it be time to talk about it?”

Ginny sighed. It was hard for her to watch Hermione so upset. She wanted desperately to tell her best friend and niece that Draco was thinking of their future. She was sworn to secrecy though, so the only comfort she could offer was to say, “Hermione, Draco loves you. It’s Valentines Day. Enjoy it.”

As Hermione’s pregnancy progressed not only was she starting to show signs externally, but also her friends and family were noticing that she was become more emotional each day. Draco had to bear the brunt of her of her emotional roller coaster. Thankfully quidditch season had started, and he immersed himself in practice and games.

Hermione decided to forgo her worries for the day and do as Ginny suggested, enjoy it. Draco had left earlier in the morning to practice and she decided to enjoy a warm bubble bath until he returned.

As she was drifting off to sleep amongst the bubbles she felt the water ripple and a warm body slide up beside her. Draco kissed her neck and whispered “why are you sleeping in the bath when the water is getting awfully cold?”

Hermione smiled and said, “it was warmer but you have been gone for so long, I must have dozed off.”

Draco kissed her lips softly and said, “I was busy planning our future it couldn’t be helped.”

Hermione’s eyes flew open as she asked, “our future?”

Draco smiled and replied, “Well I guess that depends of your answer?”

Hermione’s brow furrowed as she asked, “Answer to what?”

Draco lifted a bubble from the water and showed it to Hermione as he asked, “Will you marry me?”

Inside the bubble was a platinum engagement ring with a sizable diamond at the center, flanked by two smaller diamonds of either side. Hermione began to cry as she said, “YES!”

The bubble burst and the ring fell into Draco’s hand. He wasted no time slipping the ring on her finger and pulling her to him in a tight embrace.

He pulled back and grinned mischievously, as he said, “You better hurry up and get dressed or your going to be late.”

“Late for what?” Hermione replied.

Draco continued his grin as he said, “Your wedding it’s in an hour.”

He kissed her one last time and left the bathroom leaving a stunned Hermione still sitting in the bath.

A squealing Ginny broke Hermione from her silence as she said, “Hermione isn’t it exciting I wanted to tell you but Draco made me promise that I wouldn’t say a word.” Hurry up, we don’t have much time everyone’s here to help you get ready.”

Within seconds Pavarti, Lavander, Andrea, and Molly burst through the door and practically lifted Hermione from the tub. She was still so confused and stunned that the women decided to take charge. They dressed her, did her hair and make-up. Before she knew it she was handed a ribbon and felt a tug behind her belly button.

She landed in a beautiful garden that was brimming with flowers. She saw a magnificent castle, which the garden connected too. The castle was covered in red and green grows of ivy. Everything around her looked like something from a fairy tale. She looked down at the gown she was wearing. The dress was a soft shimmering white gown that had long sleeves that ended in a point at her middle finger. There was a simple design of hearts around the bottom, which matched the heart in the center of her train in back of her dress.

A little girl interrupted Hermione from her revelry; she was no more than five years old, who said, “Hermione, Uncle Albus says it’s time. Just follow me I practiced all morning.”

Hermione smiled and asked, “Uncle Albus?”

The little girl smiled and said, “My daddy is Aberforth Dumbledore. My name is Alexis.”

Hermione pulled little Alexis to her and said, “You’re my cousin.”

Alexis laughed and said, “That’s right, but we better hurry the blonde guy Draco has a hex on him or something he keeps turning red then white then green for no reason.”

Hermione giggled and replied, “Lets go see if we can help him.”

Albert Granger met the ladies at the edge of the garden. He extended a hand to his daughter and asked, “Are you ready for this?”

Hermione hugged her father and replied, “I’m not sure I’ll ever be, but I’ve come too far to stop now.” Albert gave her a kiss on the cheek and turned toward the aisle.

On the grounds before them looked to be nearly every student, aside from the Slytherins, and teachers at Hogwarts as well dozens of other witches and wizards Hermione didn’t recognize but judging by their red hair guessed to be more of her Weasley relatives. At the end of the aisle stood Draco, Harry, Ron, and Neville, who stood opposite Ginny, Lavander, and Pavarti. Everything around her was perfect and Hermione couldn’t help but smile as she took her place next to Draco.

Dumbledore stood before the group and began to speak. “Welcome all who come to share in this glorious day. Before us stand two who have fought to overcome considerable obstacles to find happiness in each other’s eyes. They have made the journey from enemies to lovers and have come here today seeking the eternal bonds of marriage to unite their souls.” He smiled at the two before him who held each other’s hands firmly as they nervously smiled back.

Dumbledore looked to Harry and said, “The rings please.” Harry then pulled a small box from his pocket and took out two platinum rings, which he handed to Draco and Hermione

Dumbledore continued, “Do you Hermione Elizabeth Granger take Draco Alexander Malfoy to be your husband until this world you shall part?”

Hermione squeezed Draco’s hand affectionately and replied, “I do.” Draco slid the ring on her finger, which felt warm and comforting.

Dumbledore smiled and turned to Draco as he said, “Do you Draco Alexander Malfoy take Hermione Elizabeth Granger to be your wife until this world you shall part?”

A large smile crossed Draco’s face as he replied, “I do.” Hermione slid the ring on Draco’s finger and could feel the warmth of his ring beneath her hand.

Dumbledore continued, “I declare these to wed from now until eternity. Let no one come between those we have united on this day. You may kiss your bride.”

Draco didn’t wait for a second invitation, as he swooped down on Hermione to lift her in his arms as he passionately kissed her before the crowd. The women blushed and the men smiled but none there could deny the love that the two obviously shared.

As he set Hermione back on the ground Draco asked, “Would you like to see our new home?”

Hermione smiled and said, “Yes. Where is it?”

Draco smiled as he pointed to the castle and said, “here.”

Hermione’s eyes grew wide as she a, “T, “This is ours?”

“I sold Malfoy Manor and bought this place. It’s called Avalon. I want our child to grow up with light all around them not the darkness I was brought up in.” Draco softly said to his wife.

Hermione grinned as she replied, “You turned all right in the end.”

Draco wrapped his arms around his wife and said, “That only because I found you.”

Four months later…

“Breathe Hermione, you have to breathe” Draco coaxed his wife.

“I’ll breathe when I feel like it Draco, but right now I want to push. I want this over with.” Hermione clutched hiss hand, and boar down against the pain, as she began to push.

Draco panicked and replied, “Hermione Madame Pomfrey said to wait. It’s not time yet. She’ll be back any minute please just wait for her to say it’s ok.”

“AAHHHH Damnit Draco it hurts I can’t do this any more the baby’s coming now. I’m pushing” Hermione clamped down on his hand and pushed.

Draco shouted, “Madame Pomfrey hurry!”

The mediwitch came around the corner from her office holding a blanket in her hand. When she noticed a crown of golden locks making it’s way into the world she dashed to Hermione’s bed. “Slow down girl I haven’t been gone 5 minutes and your ready to give birth to this baby when no one’s here to catch it.”

Hermione furrowed her bow and said, “Then catch it because I want it out.” She pushed with all her might and into the world came a beautifuly giy girl.

Madame Pomfrey held up the wriggling baby, which she placed in her parents’ outstretched arms. “Mr. And Mrs. Malfoy you have a girl.”

Hermione’s face contorted in pain as she cried, “it still hurts. Why does it still hurt?”

Madame Pomfrey looked down and noticed something she hadn’t expected but simply told Hermione, “Push child your works not quite done.”

Hermione pushed with what little strength she had remaining in her body, and into the world came a platinumnde nde haired boy.

Madame Pomfrey placed the second child with his parents and said, “Looks like the two of you will have your hands full with this set of twins. Let’s just pray they don’t take after their uncles Fred and George. I don’t know if this school can handle another set of twins the likes of those two.”

Hermione looked into the eyes of the little babies in her arms and told Draco, “One of each, and their perfect. What should we call them? All the names we picked somehow don’t seem to fit a set of twins.”

Draco looked down at his children and said without hesitation, “Romeo and Juliet Malfoy welcome to our family.”

There was only a week left before the end of school. Hermione had managed many thought by sheer determination to last through her exams without going into labor. However the moment she finished her last newt her water had broke.

The couple for the last 4 months had moved permanently into Hermione’s room. While Draco’s room had been redecorated as a nursery. Over the coarse of the remaining week Hermione spent the majority of her days at night nursing the babies, resting only for short periods mostly during the day when Draco was able to watch the twins.

As graduation day came Draco and Hermione were looking forward to it as a bit of a break from the twins who though adorable had become very demanding with their constant need to be fed and changed.

Since the ceremony was to be held in the evening it was decided that the twins would stay with Madame Pomfrey in the Hospital wing until the festivities were concluded. The parents kissed goodnight their sleepy babies and made their way to the great hall.

Dumbledore’s voice boomed thought the hall as he announced, “Welcome all to this years graduation ceremony. These fine students came here as empty slates in search of knowledge of the witches and wizards they would come to be. It took seven years for them to make this journey from adolescence to adulthood. They have lived life, seen death, made friends, and found love. So now we return them to the world, which brought them here. Those that have passed through these halls will not soon be forgotten and should know that should you ever need her, Hogwarts will always be your home. To this years graduating class, it’s been an honor to know you. Go out into the world and do Hogwarts proud.”

A resounding cheer filled the room at the end of Dumbledore’s speech. The crown calmed as Minerva McGonagall took to her feet. “I would also like to offer my best wishes to this years class. I have the honor of presenting several awards to our graduates as your names are called please come to the front:

Outstanding Acac Acc Achievement Hermione and Draco Malfoy

Outstanding Bravery Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy

Outstanding Loyalty Hermione Malfoy and Ronald Weasley

Outstanding use of Cunning Pansy Parkinson and Theodore Nott

Lets give them all a round of applause.”

The crowd cheered for the six students in the front, as they each looked at the plaques in their hands.

Dumbledore motioned for everyone including the award winners to be seated as he announced, “Now without further ado enjoy the feast.” The tables erupted in food as everyone bego eao eat and converse.

Draco was seated with the Gryffindors much to the displeasure of his fellow Slytherins, but since his wedding he had found himself more comfortable with the Gryffindors than his own house.

The Head boy and Girl made their rounds saying their congratulations and goodbyes to their fellow students. The couple would not be on the train the next day as the ride would be too long for the children, they decided to travel via the Knight Bus. Their home was only about an hour from Hogwarts. Draco had sugge goi going by broom but Hermione detested flying and refused to allow the children travel so high in the air.

As the night ended Draco and Hermione made their way to the hospital wing to take Romeo and Juliet back to their room. However the sight that met their eyes as they opened the door maermiermione drop to her knees. Madame Pomfrey lay dead on the floor with a knife in her back surrounded by a pool of blood. There was not a single sound coming from the room.

Draco ran to the babies’ cots only to find them completely empty. He turned to look as his frightened wife to say, “Their gone.”
