Chapter Fifteen
Hermione stirred at the feel of Severus sitting up from the bed. She felt him kissing her temple and the soft breathy whisper to tell her to go back to sleep. Being as exhausted as she was, she curled back up and fell asleep once more.
When Hermione woke up the next morning, it was to discover that she was alone in the bed. Thinking nothing of it, she got up and went to take care of her morning rituals. Once dressed, yet still not completely awake she went out to the small private dining area. The sight of Lucius Malfoy sitting at the table eating had her stopping in her tracks. This, she thought, was not expected.
Going over to the table, she was startled when Lucius stood up.
“Good morning,” he murmured. “The coffee is fresh.”
“Thank you,” she answered, serving herself some. “So let’s not beat around the bush, why are you out early?”
Smiling he said, “The Ministry of Magic needed me to take them through the Malfoy properties. And since I cannot very well stay in my home,” At this his eyes became icy. “Then I must stay somewhere.”
“That is why they invented hotels and public houses,” she shot back. Hermione was then silent a moment before saying, “And what has Severus to say about this?”
Lucius arched his brow at her wording and said, “He is very well aware that I am staying here, as it was his idea for me to do so.”
She said nothing for a time. “Your wife is here as well as your son and yet you’re not with them.”
His mouth went into a hard thin line, but said nothing.
“Ah, so it’s like that?” She leaned back studying him. “You are far from being a victim, Mr. Malfoy. So I shan’t treat you as such.” Hermione stood up.
She was on her way out of the small dining room when he snapped, “Miss Granger.” Stopping she turned to face him. He stood up, looking at her with a hard face. “I do not like being indebted to you.”
“I know.”
His brow arched, but went on with what he was saying. “Why did you do it?”
“Not for your sake,” she told him. “I did it for me.” Confusion crossed his regal features. “Because unlike you, I am not going to allow my anger, my need for a hollow revenge, and my total disgust for everything you represent to make me into a muggle version of a death eater.” She stepped closer to him snarling, “And perhaps if you learned this lesson after the first war, we wouldn’t be going through this now.”
“Done with your lecture?” he sneered.
“Done being a sanctimonious ass?” she shot back and when he didn’t answer, she replied, “I’ll take that as a no.”
They were still snarling at each other when Severus came over, stopping in his tracks. “I see you have found each other.”
She turned to face him. “Is he getting his own rooms?”
Severus blinked at her. “It wouldn’t be safe…”
“Right.” Hermione left saying, “I’m not coming back until he’s given his own chamber away from yours.”
Severus watched as she left in shock. Turning to look over to Lucius, he snapped, “What happened?”
“Whatever do you mean?” Lucius asked, sitting back down again. “Tell me, Severus, what did you expect to happen between us? Certainly not forgiveness and sunshine?” He began sipping his coffee again, adding, “I must admit it was a relief to see that she was still utterly human. I was beginning to think that the girl was going out for sainthood.”

Harry found Hermione sitting on one of the quidditch stands. At first he thought she was shaking due to the cold winds and her lack of a warm jacket, but the closer he flew the more he saw that she was crying. She was sitting, shaking, with tears dripping hot down her face. He landed and rushed over to her. Taking her into his arms, he held her as she sobbed.
“If Snape hurt…”
“No,” she sobbed. “He wouldn’t.” Swallowing thickly, she whispered, “Lucius Malfoy is here at the school.” Sniffing she looked into her friend’s green eyes. “He didn’t do anything either. Just being his usual prat self.” Absently she dashed away at her tears with her fingers that were clumsy with the cold. “I hate him so much…I-I can’t even express it.”
“Then why did you get him out of Azkaban?”
“What I feel for that man has nothing to do with what is going on,” she told him quietly, resting her head on his shoulder. “I tried to at least tolerate him.”
Harry sighed as he rubbed her back. “Why?”
“To keep the peace,” she breathed. “Harry?”
“What?” he asked quietly.
“How…how can I get over it?”
“I don’t know,” he answered honestly. “I’m still trying to figure that out myself.”

Hermione let out a sigh as she relaxed into the bath water. Ringing out the towel, she draped it over her eyes. She had been close to being frozen by the time she came back into the school. Deciding that she wanted nothing to do with talking with another person, Hermione thought that taking a bath would be the thing to do—if only to warm herself.
She was resting like that for five minutes when she got the feeling she was being watched. Lifting the towel from her face, she looked over to see Severus watching her from the darkened corner of the room.
“What is Harry Potter to you?” he asked, his voice low and hard.
“My friend,” she told him.
“You never…”
“No. Never.” Hermione sat up straight. “Why?”
“You went to him.” He stepped away from the wall. “Not me.”
Sinking back into the water, she asked him, “I didn’t go out there looking for him.”
“Really? You went to the quidditch field because you have a great love of the sport?” he asked sarcastically.
“No, I went there just because I needed to be alone. No one would look for me there,” she whispered, her voice hoarse. Hermione cleared her throat. “Though I should have taken something far warmer to wear with me, now that I think of it.” She cleared her throat again. “Harry is like a brother to me. That’s all he’ll ever be. And if you can’t trust me enough to believe what I’m telling you…” She sneezed. “I think I caught a cold.”
Sighing heavily Severus went over to her and helped her out of the tub. Once she was standing before her, he said, “Yes, I do believe so. You were an idiot for staying out there that long without warmer coverings.”
Hermione was too busy sneezing to make a rebuttal. He handed her a hankie. A moment later he handed her the robe that was hanging on the chair. Once finished, she was again sneezing.
“Did you think of a warming charm at the very least?” he demanded of her. “You’re a witch, for Merlin sake, not a full blown muggle! Did you take leave of your common sense, woman?”
“For the first half hour, my anger kept me warm,” she told him, sniffling. “After that I was too numb to notice.”
Growling to himself, he shuffled her out of the prefect’s bathroom straight over to his private rooms. When they were passing Lucius and he was about to say something, Hermione lifted her hand up and did the universal symbol known around the world as the bird. Mildly shocked, Lucius looked over to Severus who was trying to keep from laughing at her actions, as he kept her moving along.
Getting her into bed, he got the potions she would need, and brought them over to her. “Drink.”
“I…”
“I did not say speak,” he snapped. “I said drink.”
Glaring at him, she did just that. Thank Merlin she was too tired to say anything, as she curled up in the bed and fell very soundly asleep. He let out a long sigh, turned and left the room.

It's time for the Review Sing-A-Long! The last answer was "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. BBQ ribs go out to beerwench1313 and foofie! If I missed you, I'm sorry.
Time for the next song. "I'm goin' back to reveiw, review, review. I'm going back to review--hmm, I don't think so." There is it. No hints this time. I hope everyone has a lovely day.
