Confrontation
Confrontation
Harry watched as Hermione sat with Severus Snape, a small smile on her pale face. She looked much better than the last time he had seen her, but that wouldn’t have been all that difficult, he admitted. Her hand slid over her consort’s, lacing her fingers with his. Harry half expected the man to pull his hand away from hers, but was a little shocked to see the potions master absently kissing the back of it.
The pensive had given up more of the memories that he hadn’t been privy to before he had put the key into it. These included the rest of the meeting where Hermione was asked to become Harry’s vampire guardian as well as another meeting where she had been bonded to him. When Snape changed her over to a vampire, she looked so young and scared. The memories skipped around their relationship, showing how each day it became stronger. Their first blow up followed quickly by their first kiss.
“My husband,” she whispered to him, pressing her forehead to his as she combed her fingers through his hair. “My Severus.”
But then the memories were interrupted and it showed Albus Dumbledore sitting at his desk, looking straight at him.
“Harry, my boy…”
“Professor Dumbledore?” he asked, looking to him in awe.
“No, I am sorry to say not. This is but a memory, but one that was recorded especially for you,” he replied. “I told Severus that he would know when the time came when and if you should know about Miss Granger’s role in your welfare. Apparently now is that time. And seeing as that is the case, it is more than likely way past time for the link between the two of you to be dissolved as well.” He gave Harry the instructions as to how to break the link and finished off with, “You are truly lucky to have a friend like her, Mr. Potter. I sincerely doubt you would have made it without her help.”

Hermione was in the middle of helping Severus packing his things. He had enough of teaching and wanted to open an apothecary. She was all for that, seeing as she didn’t want to be at the school. Too many memories, good and bad, lived there for her. Perhaps one day she could come back to visit, but being there at that moment was too much for her now.
There was a knocking on the door. With her arms still full, she called out, “Enter!”
Harry came in slowly and was a little taken aback to see that she was packing. “Leaving?”
Hermione went still, turning to look at him. “What do you want?”
Swallowing thickly, he said, “I want to say that I was sorry.”
“Hmm.”
He frowned. “Is that all you have to say?”
“What do you want, Harry?” she repeated, this time in a harder voice. “For over eight years you made me out to be a bad guy. Need I remind you about the investigation you put me through or the constant demands you made to the Ministry of Magic screaming for my incarceration as well as the breaking of my wand? Now you come to me and the best you can do is that?” Her eyes flooded with tears. “We’re not children anymore. It’s going to take more than you finding out the truth. I had faith in you. Where was yours in me? Did you ever believe in me at all?” She wiped the tears away with a harsh hand. “I-I…” Taking a shaking breath she muttered, “Go away.”
“Hermione…”
“No,” she whispered. “Go away.”
Harry stepped up to her. “After the fighting was over, I was so…”
“Angry,” she replied. “I know.”
He nodded. “I wanted, no, I needed to blame someone.”
“And the Death Eaters weren’t good enough for the task?” she asked so dryly it was caustic.
He winced at her words. “When I found out about Remus, I found that target.”
“Yes, again I must say I know,” she repeated, she put the books down and stood up looking at him. “Is there a point to going down this memory lane?”
“I wanted you to understand!”
Her brows arched, as she stood there in a mute shock that didn’t last. “I understood! I am linked to your mind!” her roar filled the room and made books shake and fall from the bookcase. “I more than likely understood better than you did.” She took what she hoped to be a calming breath and went on. “It was because of that empathy that made everything all the more difficult.” Hermione went over to a chair and sat down. “What are you really looking for, Harry? Absolution? Or are you looking for an apology in turn?”
“You should have told me!”
“Has the meaning of the words ‘I took a wizard’s oath’ lost their meaning for you or am I catching you on a bad day?” She got to her feet. “What else should I apologize for to the great Harry Potter?” When he didn’t answer, she growled, “Get out before I throw you out.”
“I thought you were my friend.”
She stepped in front of him, stopping him from leaving. “Where in the name of Merlin do you get your definition of a friend? Friends support each other.”
“I…”
“You would have supported me right into a prison cell in Azkaban. So you better think of an answer good and hard before you say a thing,” she warned him.
“I wasn’t the best of friends! I get it!”
“Really? Then why pray tell are you expecting me to apologize to you?” she asked him. “I did what I did to make certain that you lived to do what you must so that the freedom we have as witches and wizards endures. For you to ask for an apology for that is asinine! It’s self centered and serves nothing but to placate your wounded ego and pride.”
