Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Owen sat silently across from his father, tears falling from his own cerulean eyes. He never imagined his mother had suffered because she was too tough to die. It was several minutes before he found voice again.

“She…she was a fighter wasn’t she?” he asked.

“Yes. Your mother was definitely a fighter. She fought for her and I, for the galaxy’s freedom, for her family and friends, and most importantly, you. She loved you so much and she fought to stay with you,” Luke answered tearfully.

“You were right all those years ago. When I was six and I asked you about what happened. You told me I wasn’t ready to hear the story. You were right dad,” Owen sighed.

“Owen, I wish everyday that I could have saved your mother. I think of all the things…” Luke began.

“Dad, mother’s death wasn’t your fault. I may not have had her here physically, but she was always with me. Besides, I had three mothers. Aunt Leia, Aunt Mara, and Aunt Narcissa. Never once have I lacked a mother’s love. Plus I have you. I never felt pity because mother wasn’t here. Instead, I felt blessed for what I did have. Dad, I never wanted for love, family, or friends. I know mom is watching over us and she is proud of you,” Owen said as he placed his hands on his father’s shoulders.

Luke no longer held back his tears. He pulled his son into his arms and hugged him tightly. Owen clung to his dad, both releasing their grief.

After Hermione’s death, Luke brought her body back to her home planet of Karythia. The planet their story began. She was given a Jedi funeral. Her ashes were then taken to Tatooine and interned beside Luke’s grandmother, step-grandfather, Aunt and Uncle.

The first year of Owen’s life was the hardest on Luke. It pained him to look at his own son. Owen looked so much like Hermione. Narcissa had become his nanny and between her, Mara, and Leia, he had the mother’s love he needed. When Owen turned five, Luke was finally able to bring himself to move back into the apartment he and Hermione had on Coruscant. The same went for the Academy on Yavin IV and the homestead on Tatooine.

After that, life began moving on for the Master Jedi. Hermione’s ship had been given to Severus, who visited frequently. Narcissa and Remus were married when Owen was four and the couple lived on Coruscant. Han and Leia had welcomed a third child, a boy they named Anakin after Luke and Leia’s father.

Luke smiled as he watched Owen laugh and joke with his three cousins. “You alright Luke?” Severus asked.

“I am now Severus. I finally told Owen about Hermione,” Luke answered.

“How did it go?” Severus questioned with concern.

“It went well. Owen is every bit as in tuned to the workings of the Force as Hermione was. He said things happened the way they were meant to. That brought me comfort,” Luke smiled.

“Luke, Owen is a wonderful man. You raised him just fine. I know Hermione is proud of you,” Severus replied, placing his hand on his friend’s shoulder.

“Yes, she is,” Luke nodded.

Leia and Han stepped onto their balcony. It was the night after the twins birthday and Jaina, Jacen, Owen, and Anakin had gone out, leaving their parents behind. They found Luke sitting in one of the chairs looking at the stars.

“Luke, what’s wrong?” Leia asked as she and Han sat beside him.

“I feel tired Leia,” Luke sighed wearily.

“How do you mean kid?” Han questioned.

“After I told Owen mine and Hermione’s story, I felt this burden being lifted. My duties to the Jedi, the New Republic, all of it. All I want now is to rest,” Luke explained.

Tearfully, Leia took her brother’s hand. “Perhaps it’s time you joined Hermione. You’ve done all that has been expected of you and more. The Jedi Order has been reestablished and is flourishing. You’ve saved the galaxy more times than I can count and redeemed our father. Something I never thought possible. I guess what I’m saying is…we no longer need you,” she said.

“Leia’s right Luke. We’ll miss you, but you’ll always be with us. Your legacy will live on in Owen and our children,” Han nodded, tears filling his own eyes.

“You both are right. Somehow, I feel I should have joined Hermione some time ago,” Luke replied.

Leia and Han hugged Luke. Both knowing this would be the last time the three would physically be together. At least until Han and Leia too became part of the Force. After Leia and Han released Luke, he headed off to bed.

“I’ll be seeing you soon my beloved wife,” Luke whispered as he laid to sleep.

Across town in a small café, Owen, Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin stiffened. The four stared at each other for a moment before Anakin spoke.

“Uncle Luke is now one with the Force,” he whispered sadly.

“Yes. He’s at peace now and reunited with mom,” Owen smiled softly as a single tear slid down his cheek.

The four ordered a shot of Corillian whiskey and toasted Luke.

Luke found himself in a field of waterfalls, rolling hills, and flowers. He looked around, unsure of where he was. He spotted four figures approaching him. He instantly knew who they were even though the only female he had never seen. He smiled as Obi-Wan, Yoda, Anakin, and his mother Padme drew closer.

“Welcome home my son,” Anakin smiled.

“Father,” Luke beamed as he hugged his father.

“There’s someone who’s been waiting for you,” Padme grinned from his father’s side.

Luke watched as Hermione appeared. She looked as beautiful as ever. They stared at one another for a few minutes before rushing into each other’s arms. Obi-Wan, Yoda, Padme, and Anakin smiled at the couple.

“Luke. Oh Luke,” Hermione sighed as he held her.

“My beloved wife. I’ve missed you and thought of you everyday,” Luke whispered, enjoying the feel of her in his arms once more.

“I know. I’m proud of you. You have raised our son to be a good man and a good Jedi. To see the good in life. He is our legacy. He and his cousin will lead the next generation of Jedi,” Hermione said, looking into his eyes with love and pride.

“Your destiny, completed you have,” Yoda replied proudly.

“The galaxy and the Jedi are safe. Thanks to you,” Obi-Wan added.

“I didn’t do it alone. We all did it,” Luke stated as he smiled at his family.

Luke was given a Jedi funeral on Coruscant. Owen and his family then interned Luke’s ashes beside Hermione’s on Tatooine. Owen, Jaina, Jacen, and Anakin continued the legacy left behind by Hermione and Luke. Continuing the training and duties of the Jedi Order.

THE END!
