Chapter Fifteen
Noah’s First Birthday
‘God, that child has impeccable timing, doesn’t he?’ Remus muttered early one morning as he got back into bed and moved closer to Billie. ‘Now where was I?’
There was silence and he looked over to see Billie had fallen asleep while he‘d run to the nursery to give Noah back his special stuffed bunn. He\'d spent a few minutes throwing some extra toys in the cot, begging him to stay in bed for just ten more minutes because ‘mummy and daddy are playing right now‘.
He laughed softly and kissed his wife’s bare shoulder before getting back out of bed, walking to the nursery down the hall. As he entered, he could hear Noah chattering away unintelligibly to himself.
‘Hey, little man,’ he said softly, seeing Noah look at him and pulled the bunny out of his mouth, squealing in delight that his father had come back to play with him so quickly. ‘Happy Birthday!’
Remus grinned back at his son as he lifted him out of the cot, taking the whack on the head with the toy as a sign of affection. He went downstairs and strapped him into his chair, talking to him as he fed him some cereal and prepared a bottle. By the time he’d finished, Noah was yawning again, and the sun was up.
Remus yawned as well as he carried his son back up to bed, putting him in his cot. As he walked out he heard Noah say, ‘Da!’
Remus turned around and looked at him, waiting until he heard a sleepy, ‘Dada’. He grinned. Noah’s first word - well, the first that anyone could understand. Remus was thrilled and headed happily back to his bedroom, seeing Billie stirring a little as he crawled in next to her.
‘Morning,’ he said, as he pressed himself up against her back, pulling her hips closer to his.
‘Hi,’ she mumbled as he brushed her hair away from her neck and kissed her, moving his mouth down from her jaw to her shoulder.
‘Mmm,’ she said, feeling his hand move around to tease her nipple. ‘Didn’t we try this earlier?’
Remus let out a breath of laughter, then made a hissing sound as her hand reached back to grip him.
‘Yes we did,’ he said, his own hand moving down to stroke her, feeling her ass move, rubbing against him. ‘And this is about as far as we got before we were interrupted.’
Billie pushed her hips back again, moaning when he lifted her leg. ‘Better move quickly then,’ she said, as his fingers slid inside her. ‘He won’t sleep long.’
Remus grinned then entered her slowly, feeling her all around him.
‘Oh,’ she breathed as he moved inside her.
They moved together, Remus holding her leg up as she ground herself back against him. His fingers moved again, stroking her until he felt her tightening around him and she reached back and dug her nails into his ass, pulling him deeper. Billie cried out his name and he felt her uncontrollable shudders as her release hit her. He couldn’t wait any longer and let himself go, pushing as far into her as he could as he exploded, shaking hard as he gripped her leg tightly.
‘I don’t believe it,’ he said a few minutes later. ‘We actually had uninterrupted sex.’
Billie laughed, Remus groaning as her inner muscles clenched him. ‘Fuck, that feels good,’ he said, pushing into her a little more.
‘Cut it out,’ she said with a smile. ‘There is no way we’d be that lucky twice in a row, even if you could get it up again that quickly.’
‘Are you doubting me?’ he said, with a smile, kissing her back, feeling himself harden a little again. He kissed her shoulders and told her about hearing Noah say ‘dada’.
‘Typical,’ she said. ‘I look after him all day, every day, and you get the first word.’
She turned her head. ‘Thank you for getting up to him.’ She gave him a bashful smile. ‘I guess teething exhausted me as much as him. Sorry I fell asleep on you before.’
‘That’s alright,’ he said, pulling her tighter against him. ‘You more than made it up to me.’
He slipped further into her and suddenly, to both her surprise and his, was hard again. ‘Wow,’ she said, wriggling on him and hearing him groan. ‘You are full of surprises aren’t you?’
She pulled away from him and pushed him over onto his back, straddling him and moaning when she felt him sliding back inside her.
‘God, you’d better be just as quick as you were before,’ she said, beginning to move. ‘If he wakes up and you leave me hanging, I’m going to kill you.’
Remus sat up and kissed her, hot and hard. She moved fast on him, and they both felt themselves quickly getting out of control. His mouth moved down and sucked her nipple hard, hearing her cry out as his fingers also found her, stroking hard. Already sensitive and aroused, she didn’t take long to begin to shake again. She called out, ‘God, Remus!’ loudly as she came, dragging him over the edge with her as her body tightened around his.
‘Jesus, Belle,’ he growled into her neck, as his release shook him hard.
As they collapsed back onto the bed, both breathing erratically, they heard the sound of Noah talking to his toy. They both laughed.
‘Well done,’ she said, raising her head and kissing Remus. ‘Not only did we get to do it twice, but he stayed asleep until we were done. You do realise what this means?’
Remus rolled her over, groaning as he moved over her. ‘That I’m getting up at 5 o’clock every morning to him?’ he guessed, his lips moving against hers.
‘You bet your sweet ass,’ she said with a grin, slapping said ass sharply.
‘Dada,’ they heard, and Remus’ head shot up.
‘Did you hear that?’ he said, all exhaustion forgotten as his son called out to him.
‘Yes I did,’ she said, grinning despite her grumpy tone. She pushed her husband off her, and rolled over, climbing out of bed.
‘Since he’s calling you, I’m going for a shower.’ She poked her tongue out at him, then dodged the pillow he threw at her.
A few minutes later Remus opened the shower door and handed a now naked Noah to his equally as naked, but wet mother and, after taking a minute to admire Billie‘s ass, he stripped and got in as well, soaping up Noah as the little boy and Billie blew raspberries on each other’s faces, both giggling madly. Remus smiled as he listened to his family laughing with each other.
‘How’s my birthday boy?’ Billie said, kissing Noah on the neck, making him giggle harder.
‘Are we going to see Grandma Molly today?’ Remus said, taking Noah out of Billie’s arms and holding him up in the air.
‘She’ll kill you if you keep calling her that,’ Billie warned, getting out of the shower, and wrapping a towel around herself.
‘She loves it,’ he retorted, handing her Noah, who she quickly dried off.
Molly and Arthur doted on Noah as much as they did their own grandchild, Bill and Fleur’s daughter, Victoire, who was born just months after Noah.
Remus washed, then made his way to his bedroom, seeing a dressed Noah, playing with Billie’s shoes as his mother dressed.
‘Dada,’ he announced, as Remus came into the room. Billie laughed at Remus’ face.
‘You’ll get sick of that one day,’ she warned. ‘When it’s followed by ‘can I borrow some money?’.’
Remus grinned and after they dressed and ate, they Flooed to The Burrow for Noah’s birthday party.
‘Noah Matthew Lupin,’ Remus called, jumping up and grabbing his son. ‘Leave that gnome alone.‘
He tossed Noah up into the air, and plopped him back on the ground next to Victoire, who immediately tried to pull his toy off him, causing Noah to hit her over the head with it.
‘It’s a sign of affection, Vicky,’ said Billie, picking up the now crying child and hugging her. ‘I swear, the number of times he’s hit you, you two will end up married.’
She held her goddaughter up and tickled her, Victoire giggling now.
Remus watched her play with their godchild. He knew Billie would love a little girl to complete their family; so would he, but it wasn’t possible. Not naturally. He thought about the conversation he’d had with Kingsley about adoption. His condition would normally make it impossible without his friend batting for him.
He hadn’t told Billie about the owl he’d received from Kingsley late last night. He wanted to celebrate Noah’s birthday without anything else on their minds, and he wasn’t sure how Billie would react to Kingsley’s request. He watched Billie and Fleur talking, Billie bouncing Victoire on her knee as Noah pulled himself up on her leg, smiling and chattering away to the oblivious little girl.
‘I’ll talk to her tonight,’ he promised himself, pushing his thoughts aside for now.
‘Come on, Noah,’ said Bill, picking the boy up and holding him upside down, making him laugh. ‘Your godfather’s will take you for a fly on their brooms. Let‘s go, Harry.’
Remus saw Billie’s mouth open, and put a hand over it.
‘They’ve taken him before,’ he said soothingly. ‘You know they’d never let him get hurt.’ Billie frowned, watching Harry and Bill, joint godfathers to Noah, take her son off to play on their brooms.
Her face relaxed as she saw Harry hold Noah tight, flying low to the ground. Bill and his brother Ron, also flying on brooms, swooping around Noah and Harry, making him laugh and call out to them in his own language. Fleur was also watching and shuddered as she watched the men.
‘He is always taking Victoire up on that thing,’ she said. ‘I keep telling him it’s not ladylike…’
Remus laughed, leaning over and taking Victoire out of Billie’s arms.
‘Come on, sweetheart,’ he said, standing up. ‘Let’s go watch Noah have all the fun.’
Night fell and Remus and Billie took a sleeping Noah home. Billie made a cup of tea for them, while Remus sat in the rocking chair next to Noah’s bed, watching him sleep. ‘Here,’ Billie said, handing him the cup with a smile.
Remus pulled her carefully into his lap and they rocked on the chair, watching Noah.
‘He’s perfect, isn’t he?’ said Billie, stroking Remus’ hair.
‘Mmm,’ he agreed, tightening his arms around her. ‘He looks like you.’
Billie smiled. ‘Not so much anymore,’ she said. ‘He has your nose, and your eyes…’
He interrupted, saying, ‘Your face shape, your mouth and smile, your hair colour.’
‘Perfect combination of both of us,’ she said, hugging him close.
They sat in silence for a moment, then Remus said, ‘You know you have given me everything I ever wanted?’
Billie looked at him. ‘Ditto,’ she said, kissing him.
He bit his lip deciding it was now or never.
‘Belle?’ he said, hearing her murmur in reply. ‘What do you think of adoption?’ He felt her turn on his lap, and looked up at her.
She frowned at him. ‘Adoption?’ she repeated, startled by the turn in conversation. ‘To be honest, I’ve never given it a thought. Why?’
‘Come on,’ he said, pushing her up and then standing himself. He led her to their room, and handed her the letter from Kingsley.
‘I had a talk with Kingsley a month or so ago about our chances of adopting a child,’ he explained, seeing surprise on her face. ‘I didn’t say anything because I didn’t think our chances were particularly good given my condition.’
He indicated the letter. ‘Kingsley sent me that yesterday.’
Billie opened the letter, reading it quickly, then starting again and reading it more carefully. When she’d finished, she looked up at Remus with a stunned expression.
‘Is this for real?’ she said, her voice disbelieving.
Remus nodded, then asked, ‘So, what do you think? It’s a big step, and it will mean a lot of changes.’
Billie nodded too, but smiled at him. ‘You really want this?’ she asked. ‘You’re really sure?’
He reached out and took her hand. ‘Only if you do,’ he said. ‘If this is going to be too hard, or if you don’t think it would work….’
His words were cut off abruptly as Billie kissed him. ‘You are the most incredible man, do you know that?’ she said against his lips.
He grinned and said, ‘Can I take that to mean you want to go ahead?’ She nodded and moved her lips to his neck.
‘You can,’ she mumbled, kissing down his throat, her hands undoing his shirt. And let me just take a minute to show you how amazing I think you are…’
Ten years later
‘Gryffindor!’ the sorting hat called out, and Billie turned to smile at her husband, who put his fingers in his mouth and whistled loudly over the students clapping.
Noah Lupin turned pink, narrowing his blue eyes in mock annoyance as he glared up at his father, who grinned back at him. His eyes turned to his mother, and he smiled at her before taking his seat the house table. Alice called the next student, shaking her head at Remus in amusement.
‘Holly Lupin!’ she said, and watched the dark haired girl weave through the crowd. Billie sat up straight again, watching anxiously as her daughter took the seat and Alice put the hat on her head.
‘Ravenclaw!’ it screamed almost instantly, surprising no one who knew her. Holly was a brilliant child, stunning her family and friends with her knowledge. The confident eleven year old turned her brown eyes turned to look up at the staff table, waving to her mother and father, who grinned back at her. She smiled then poked her tongue out at her brother as she passed the Gryffindor table and he playfully returned the gesture as he clapped, not embarrassed to show his pride in his sister.
‘One more!’ exclaimed Alice, to the staff’s amusement, calling out, ‘Toby Lupin!’
Billie swallowed hard and felt Remus grip her hand as Toby slowly walked up to the stool, his anxiety obvious in his wide brown eyes - identical to his sisters.
‘God, please Gryffindor,’ mumbled Billie, and her husband squeezed her hand tighter, whispering, ‘He’ll be fine, wherever he goes. He has to learn to do this on his own.’
Remus and Billie adopted the twins after their mother abandoned them when they were ten months old. Kingsley had heard about the twin’s plight, and immediately contacted Remus to ask whether he and Billie would be interested in adopting them. When they had visited the agency, it was clear to both of them that the twins would be much better off with them than where they were; the prejudice of the carers at the house was obviously affecting the way they treated the children, Toby in particular. They took them home three days later, then set about trying to adjust their lives to suit three very small children - one with special needs.
Remus had never seen such a small child transform, and after the first few full moons, he had sobbed on Billie’s shoulder afterwards. It had devastated him to see the infant go through the agonising change into a wolf, even though he knew, without the potion, it could have been so much worse.
Toby was quieter than Holly or Noah, seeming to know instinctively that he was different. Remus saw so much of himself in the boy, and the two had formed a close bond through their shared affliction. Billie had tried to make it as positive as she could, emphasising the fact that her son didn’t have to go through this alone, that it was something he and his dad shared. But she and Remus couldn’t help the over protectiveness they felt, even though they tried to force it down, not wanting to make the lycanthropy a bigger issue than it was. Remus in particular, knew how badly Toby wanted to just be normal, so made Billie treat him the same as the other children.
The children, only two months apart in age, grew close, Billie and Remus never hiding the twins’ adoption and ensuring they knew they were as loved as Noah. Their easy going son had, after a slightly rocky beginning, quickly taken to his new brother and sister. This was a blessing for Billie. Holly was confident and outgoing, but Toby was the opposite. Shy to the point of being introverted with everyone except those closest to him, he struggled to make friends, so Noah’s acceptance was a relief, as was his self proclaimed role as Toby’s protector. Which was why Billie was now praying her son’s got into the same school house.
‘Gryffindor!’ the hat yelled as soon as it touched Toby’s head, startling his parents as well as Toby. He smiled, seeing his brother and sister stand up and clap hard. Sliding off the seat, he turned to smile at his parents, who were both grinning. His father winked at him and he winked back. Despite her best efforts to hide it, he could see the relief on his mother’s face and, as he turned back, he gave her a little thumbs up signal, making her laugh. He sat next to his brother at the table, waving at his excited sister across the hall. Noah clapped him on the back and began to introduce him to the other students.
The Sorting went by as a blur for Billie and Remus now their children had been sorted. Billie’s mind drifting to the mountain of paperwork she had on her desk. The school board had jumped when they heard Billie was now looking for work, offering her the Headmistress position immediately. Remus was thrilled to be working with his wife again; their children not so thrilled to have both parents working at their school.
‘It was bad enough when it was just going to be dad, now both of you are going to be keeping an eye on us,’ Noah had grumbled when they’d told them about Billie’s new job.
Remus knew why Noah was cranky: he’d inherited some of the prankster genes from his father, and his godfather Harry had clued him in on the pranks the Marauders had pulled at school. He suspected Noah had been secretly planning with Toby to keep the tradition going. He finally admitted he didn‘t really mind, though concerned they would be hugging or kissing in front of his friends, and had tried to make them swear they wouldn’t even touch each other in public.
Holly had been unsure of how to react. Their daughter had her father wrapped firmly around her little finger, and knew he’d let her get away with almost anything. Her mother was a different story though, but the two were close and secretly, Holly was pleased to have her mum nearby if she needed her.
Toby shrugged when he heard, but was quietly relieved. He and his dad were very close and he was thankful he was there to be with him during the transformations, but he quietly loved Billie like nothing else - recalling the nights he had crept into his parent’s bed and Billie and he had whispered secret’s into each other’s ears, his mother holding him as they fell back to sleep.
Billie and Remus perked up again when Victoire Weasley was called, watching their god daughter get sorted into Gryffindor as well. Billie smiled when she saw Toby’s excited clapping. He and Victoire were inseparable; the bright, outgoing girl doing wonders for his confidence. Remus suspected a slightly different motive for Toby’s excitement, watching his son blush as Victoire hugged him. He grinned then looked down at his plate, trying to bite back the laugh that rose in him.
After dinner, Billie and Remus approached the tables and beckoned their children over to a quiet corner.
‘Now, you know where we are if you need us?’ Billie said a little anxiously.
They had never spent the night so far apart before, and she was a little emotional about her children growing up so quickly.
‘Mum,’ Noah grumbled, glancing over his shoulder to see if anyone was watching them. ‘We’ll be fine.’
Remus laughed and hugged his son. ‘Alright, we’ll see you tomorrow then,’ he said, feeling Noah’s arms come up around him and was surprised.
Noah hated public displays of affection these days. He must have been a little more unsettled than he was letting on. He squeezed him tight for a moment, then looked down at him, a question in his eyes. Noah saw it and nodded, smiling uncertainly.
Remus ran a hand over his son’s head and bent to whisper in his ear, ‘Don’t be embarrassed to admit you need us,’ then stood up quickly, seeing his son nod again and whisper, ‘Thanks dad.’
He smiled then let Billie hug Noah, seeing his oldest son cling onto his mother a little harder and longer than necessary. He turned and Holly launched herself at him, hugging him tight and kissing him on each cheek, his nose and then forehead, as was their tradition.
‘Love you, daddy,’ she said without concern over who might hear her, and he again marvelled at her confidence.
She impatiently tried to push Noah off Billie so she could hug her, and Remus turned to Toby who was standing back.
‘Come give your old man a hug,’ he said with a smile and Toby stepped forward, wrapping his arms around his dad and mentor.
He felt a shiver of fear run through him at the thought of leaving them, but his father whispered in his ear to remember what he’d told him about his own first few nights at school. Toby nodded and his dad reminded him of the excursion they were going to make to the Shrieking Shack at the first full moon.
Toby felt a little more excitement now and let his death grip on his father relax a little.
Billie hugged him to her hard now, and he was surprised to feel a tear on his neck. ‘Belle,’ whispered Remus warningly, and she quickly wiped them away.
‘Sorry, sorry,’ she muttered, kissing Toby and softly telling him the password to the Head’s office.
‘In case you need to come and see me for chocolate cake in the middle of the night,’ she whispered and he tightened his grip for a moment, before Noah pulled him off.
‘Come on,’ he said urgently, seeing the Ravenclaw and Gryffindor prefects gesturing to them. They ran off, waving.
Billie took a deep, shaking breath and felt Remus pull her to him in a hug, tighter than usual, giving away his own reluctance to let their children go.
‘They’ll be fine,’ she said, trying to reassure herself as well as him. He nodded and kissed her neck.
‘And just think,’ he mumbled. ‘We don’t have to bite our tongues so much anymore.’
She laughed and held his hand as he pulled away, leading her up to their room.
‘No children to walk in on us and ask why we don’t have any clothes on,’ he said, pulling her closer, his hand wandering down to her ass as they climbed the spiral staircase to Billie’s office.
‘Mmm,’ she said, beginning to see the silver lining. ‘No one questioning why we are showering together, and what‘s taking us so long.’ He grinned and locked the office door behind them. ‘And we can get reacquainted with an old friend,’ he said, pulling her over to her desk and pushing the mess on it off onto the floor.
He lifted her up and sat her on the edge, pushing her skirt up as he did. ‘Remember you’re ten years older now,’ she teased as his hands undid her shirt. ‘Don’t give yourself a heart attack.’
‘Cheeky,’ he mumbled against her neck, feeling her skin heat up as he slid a hand up her skirt.
‘Christ,’ she hissed as his fingers found their mark, and her own hands moved to his pants, quickly undoing his fly.
‘Are you going to be as quick as you were that first night?’ she asked, as her hand found him and stroked.
‘Fuck,’ he said, as his excitement grew quickly. ‘I just might be if you keep that up.’
‘Good,’ she said, breathless now as his fingers quickly bought her to the edge.
She hooked a leg around his waist and felt the tip of him brush against her underwear. ‘I can’t wait any longer.’
He groaned and pushed her underwear aside, thrusting into her as hard as he had that first night on this table. It was nearly as quick: Billie falling first, then Remus as her body tightened around him. They stayed like that as they regained some control, then Remus kissed her hard.
‘I love you,’ he said, smiling down at her, his heart soaring when he heard her whisper, ‘I love you too.’
