The Sweetest Dreams
Chapter Fifteen – The Sweetest Dreams
Severus was walking in the woods. It wasn’t the forbidden forest; these trees were much younger, but it was familiar all the same. Severus was aware that he was dreaming. His first clue had been the fact that he was ten-years-old again. Wracking his brain for the memory he realized that this forest was actually just a small patch of woods that had seemed endless to his younger self. As he entered the clearing that he used to frequent as a child he saw her. Lily Evans had been beautiful even at ten. Her long red hair nearly reached the ground as she crouched down. She was holding a stick, drawing in the dirt. She was waiting for him.
He had walked up behind her and was glad for that fact. He had dreamed of Lily often and he knew from experience that his dream-Lily was not pleased with him for allowing her death. As Lily sensed his presence and started to turn, he summoned his emotional strength. However, when her eyes met his they were not filled with the anger and hatred that he had seen there for the last seventeen years. Instead, her lovely green eyes glanced at him with the same excitement and admiration that she had always reserved especially for him. His heart nearly broke at the expression of joy she bestowed him. He reached out his hand to her but she shook her head softly.
Then suddenly, Lily began to age before his eyes. He watched in awe as she transformed from a little girl, to a blossoming young woman, to a gorgeous adult. When she reached this final stage her transformation ended, for indeed she could go no further, and she stood before him the exact way she had looked before Voldemort cut her down. Severus realized with a start that he had also aged. However, Lily was still nearly two decades his junior and he had regained his actual age.
She must have noticed the question in his eyes. With a wave of her hand, two objects appeared next to her. The smaller of the two floated toward her and she reached out to grab it and then extend it to his waiting hand. Severus wrapped his long pale fingers reverently around the ornate white-gold pocket watch. The hands had stopped with both of them pointing up at the twelve. He looked up at Lily with tears in his eyes, understanding the symbolism.
Lily gestured to her left to where a large mahogany grandfather clock stood contrasting with the forest backdrop. The hands of the clock were still moving and showed no signs of slowing down soon. As he watched, the minute hand reached its brother at the twelve and the hour began to sound. He looked to Lily in panic but she merely shrugged her shoulders as if to say that she had no control here. His tears were falling freely now and he attempted to rush to her but found that he couldn’t move. He stared into her eyes desperately and forced out everything in him to tear the words from his throat.
“I’m sorry!” He cried as the clock struck its final note. He felt himself slipping away into darkness and he glanced at the ground. Her stick lay forgotten next to her drawing and he stared at it for a moment before glancing back up to Lily.
As the last traces of his dream abandoned him he heard the words.
“It cannot be overcome.” Severus was unable to tell if these words were Lily’s or his own.
Upon waking Severus could still see her drawing in the earth burned into the back of his eyelids.

“Professor Snape, are you alright?” Hermione’s question startled him out of his hypnotic state of mind and propelled him roughly back into the real world.
“Of Course Miss Granger.” He answered smoothly but Hermione saw the subtle twinge in his eyes when he spoke and knew that something was bothering him.
“Well at least we know that your fabrication abilities are still in working order.” She quipped, glancing up at his face and giving him a small smile before lowering her head back to the potion she was working on. “But since I surmise that you don’t want to talk about it I will pretend that I believe you.”
Severus considered coming back with a scathing reply but discovered that he was too tired to do so. Instead he settled back in his chair and sighed.
Last nights dream had indeed unsettled him. He could not remember the last time he had a dream in which he had not been beaten within an inch of his life and nearly deafened by screams. The last words were what were bothering him now, in addition to her drawing. It didn’t seem to be a detail that would fit into one of his dreams. It was too cliché, and besides, he had never known Lily to be that type of girl. But the thing that had bothered him most about it… no… that was ridiculous.
“Professor?” Hermione addressed him carefully. “I am finished.”
Severus looked at the array of medicinal potions lined up on the bench. He would deliver them to Poppy in the morning. Hermione really had saved him a lot of time and energy.
“Miss Granger, before you go, I will need a memory from you.” Noting the look of confusion on her face he continued. “It is for our next lesson. I need the happiest memory you have.”
Hermione immediately screwed up her face in concentration, he knew that she was attempting to sort through her memories manually and he nearly laughed at her wasted effort.
“There is no need to wrack your brain Miss Granger.” Severus said slyly. He flicked his wand at her and suddenly her mind went blank. He murmured a spell that she didn’t quite catch and placed his wand at her temple, pulling the memory that had been chosen gently from her mind. The connection broke and he stored her memory in a vial for tomorrow night.
“That will be all Miss Granger.”
“Goodnight Professor.”
At least she didn’t say sweet dreams he thought to himself as she headed for the door.
Hermione turned and looked at him for a moment before whispering “Sweet dreams Sir.”

I’M BAAAAACK! I missed you all so much and I felt guilty every time I logged on to read knowing that I hadn’t updated in soooooo long.
But I really do love my readers and so I wracked my brain and created the chapter that I love the most so far. Let me know what you think.
