The Letter

The letter.

Dear Severus,

If you are reading this, then two things have happened: I am no longer of this Earth and you have found the woman who will become your wife.

I can’t imagine how you’ll look; I think you’ll be taller, wider about the shoulders, your beautiful dark eyes and ebony hair… yes, my good-looking boy, you’d make a handsome man.

I wish I could be there for your wedding, see you in your best robes – as I know the woman is a witch, because if she wasn’t this letter wouldn’t be in your hands – and saying your vows.

I wonder what she will be like? Will she be tall or petite? Slim or plump? A shimmering lovely or elegantly plain? I do not doubt that she is the most beautiful woman in the world in your obsidian eyes – as she should be.

I know I do not need to tell you this, but do not make the mistakes your Father made; he was once a wonderful, caring man – and then he turned to drink. I know you will not be so stupid as to harm your wife – but should you do so I’ll come back as a ghost and haunt you for it!

There are many pieces in here, all heirlooms of the Prince family, your Father never knew of any of them, the box lay with the solicitor for when our will was read, and was in no terms to be given to anyone but you – your Father couldn’t open it anyway, it has protective charms that can only be opened by you and your wife. Had your Father known, they would have been sold and drunk away.

These are for your wife to enjoy, and for your daughters and granddaughters. There is some male jewellery: both my Grandfather’s wedding rings; a few Prince signet rings. But most of it is from my Mother and Grandmothers. There is a beautiful string of pears that I’d like your wife to wear for the wedding, they’ll bring good luck – I did not wear them to mine, and perhaps that was the first sign of things to come?

I love you son, and I wish I could be there to see you grown and ready to marry. I wish I could be there to hold my Grandchildren. I wish so many things as I write this; but none can come true.

Cuddles and huggles, Sevvie.

Mummy.
