Dreamling Interlude

AN: Dajia, hao jiu bu jian! Nimen hao ma? (Yes, I'm aware I'm missing the tones, but I'm too tired to put them in right now. Deal with it; characters would have been just as easy.)
First off, I apologize for the late updates. RL required some serious attention, and then a certain Gringotts scene (next chapter) just did not want to be written. It still doesn't, actually, which is why this is being posted. It's pretty short, and mostly a dream sequence, but it shows that I'm still alive and writing! It also has a bit of an Xmas note in it, so I felt it appropriate. It was also just finished about five minutes ago, so I haven't had a chance to look over it. I'll fix anything you see, just let me know. ^_^

Oh, and Happy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Chimpiphany, Sauce Day (to those of you who worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster), etc. etc. Or, the "Day of 24 hours of sleep" as a certain friend celebrates it. Whatever you do, have fun!

Dreamling Interlude

Halle sat in her cupboard, listening to her cousin unwrap his gifts. She'd seen the pile already, and had no trouble imagining exactly what the carnage looked like—his meaty hands grabbing a small, but not too small box, his sausage fingers ripping through carefully cut and taped paper. That was one of the few things Aunt Petunia had not given Halle to do; she said it was because Halle might steal the gifts. Halle didn't argue because it was one less thing for her to do. The glamour of Dudley's gifts did not seem to affect her either. It had before, when she was younger, but now she was old enough to be sickened by how he just stuffed his face with presents, just like he did food. She wasn't even sure they were given in love; there had always been something off about the Dursleys. Not that she really had anything to compare it to, but it was there.

So she just sat in her cupboard, hugging her knees and fantasizing about what she would do if she ever got a real gift from someone that loved her.

Then a large man who was at once both dressed in tough, used clothing and a purple and orange polka-dotted muumuu, with brown shaggy hair and a long white beard, burst open the door and took her to a castle where she had to keep looking over her shoulder with a snake neck that she kept hidden underneath a lion's mane.

Then, suddenly she was in a field, and two sparrows landed on her. One was pure white, save for a spot on its leg, and the other was a mottled brown and red. They both sang, and chirped at eachother, then Halle took them both in her hands, and they calmed together. These were a gift from the man that had taken her from the cupboard, but he had not given them. He made it possible, but they had given themselves, not out of seasonal cheer, but because they wanted to. Because they loved her.

Halle woke up to tears on her cheeks, and wondered why while she wiped them away. She hated crying, it always made her feel sick, and did no one else a favor either, so she avoided it as much as possible.

Whatever it had been, it was gone now and she needed to get dressed — she and Ginny were having a day out, so they needed to leave early.

It is said that the darkest moment is just before dawn. It wasn't quite that dark yet, but the night's end was imminent.
