Chapter 15

Chapter 15

Draco relaxed gracefully on the grass, the blades just tall enough to be as comfortable as a quilt. He rested on his hip, one eye on the two imps running around the fountain, laughing and carrying on. The first time in more than a generation happy children had lived in Malfoy Manor, he’d wager. But he didn’t dwell on it. He didn’t dwell on the past any longer. Not when his future was so much brighter.

His own source of eternal happiness breezed through the doorway, softly calling the girls over, giving them hugs and kisses before shooing them inside for their lessons. She smiled at him and glided over, kneeling down on the grass before stealing a kiss-

Draco jerked awake with a gasp, growling in anger at the one responsible for waking him up from his nap. Pansy held up her hands in defeat, “It’s almost supper time. But if you want to sleep outside...”

Scowling at her, “I was enjoying my dreams for once.”

She smirked at him, “Hermione?”

Sighing and climbing to his feet, “Who else?”

Bumping against his hip, “You’ll have dinner with her tonight now stop pouting.”

Raising an eyebrow at her, “Since when?”

“Since this is our last week and Dumbledore is feeling magnanimous. The houses are allowed to mingle at their leisure- you know all this. Remember? The letters posted in all the common rooms. The very public announcement with Snape looking absolutely disgusted.”

Draco grinned, “I vaguely remember that part.”

Slipping her arm through his as they walked back inside, “So, what did you think of the Gryffindor Common room?”

Smirking, “I barely saw it.”

Slapping his arm, “You weren’t snogging the entire time.”

“No, I was ducking hexes that other portion of our evening.”

Rolling her eyes, “There was only one hex and both Hermione and I sorted out the little Creevy creep quite neatly. And we spent twenty minutes talking before going our separate ways now stop stalling.”

He smiled slightly, “It was alright. A bit flashy and...bright but alright.” Shaking his head in mock pity, “Poor Gryffindorks have to share dorm rooms.”

Pansy wrinkled her nose, “Unfortunately for them...and me.”

Giving her a sly look, “So how do you and Weasley manage it?”

Blushing, “I am not discussing that with you.”

Purring, “A bit of an exhibitionist, Pans?”

Laughing dryly, “Right. We put on a show just for Potter and his goons. I used my panties as a slingshot and hit the Golden boy in the face-“ Draco silently put a hand over her mouth and grinned innocently at the Potions master who was staring in horror at both of them. Pansy’s eyes widened and with a mortified squeak she hid behind Draco.

“Mr. Malfoy, I would normally request that you refrain from such matters but today I will demand it.” Draco opened his mouth, “Furthermore, I have to wonder if the relations that you’ve been having with a Gryffindor are the reason for your sudden lack of decorum.”

Draco’s eyes narrowed just a fraction, “Pans. Be a dear and wait for me in the Hall.”

Pansy hurried on her way, not looking back or even up. Carefully Draco folded his arms, “I think we have some matters to discuss in private-“

”There is nothing we have to discuss, Mr. Malfoy.”

Body stiffening, “I believe we do, unless you would chose for a very public discussion.”

Turning with a raised eyebrow, “I do not have time for flights of fancy from children, Mr. Malfoy.”

Knowing he was probably going to lose Slytherin the House Cup for this but entirely too pissed off to even think straight, “Petrificus Totalis.” Snape didn’t even have time to turn before he was completely frozen. Draco blinked to himself. He couldn’t believe he’d just done that. Swallowing, his stomach in his throat as he cautiously moved around his godfather, taking in his surprised expression, “I apologize in advance, knowing you will probably curse me to the moon and back again once I free you, along with probably a hundred points from Slytherin and detention for the remaining week but I need to talk to you.” Dumbledore was approaching from the opposite direction, stopping just sort of the confrontation of godfather and godson. His eyes were silently twinkling over his half moon specs, “No matter the choice I will either marry Hermione or the ministry will force her on me and thank you just the same but I want this to be my choosing. You don’t approve? I’m sorry but that’s the way this will be.” Hermione and Pansy both skidded to a stop, partially hidden by a suit of armor, “She’s not a Slytherin. Not a pureblood. And it’s funny but I don’t so much care about that. She makes me happy. She cares about me. Quite frankly I’m starting to understand that’s more important than her pedigree.” Hermione bit her lip to contain her smile, Pansy giggling behind her hand in delight. Finally he got it. A small crowd had silently gathered behind the Headmaster, one and all curious as to what was going on, “You had your chance once, Severus. But she wasn’t a pureblood so you used her and left her. And Potter was the lucky one to marry her.” Harry’s eyes widened in shock, Ginny slipping her arm through his in support, “Get over it, Sev. The past will only hurt you as long as you let it. And I refuse to make your mistakes. I love her. And I’m going to marry her. And if you can’t see past that then listening to my father for six years wasn’t my only mistake.”

Ron came up behind Pansy, sliding his arms around her middle and hugging her closely while a smattering of applause jerked Draco out of his staring contest with Sev. He gaped and turned bright red, fumbling with his wand and quickly ending the spell with a hasty swear word before escaping down an adjoining corridor.

Severus twitched, torn between fury and embarrassment while Albus shooed the children on their way to dinner. Harry gave the former spy a considering look before silently leaving with the rest and Hermione bravely stepped forward, “I knew from the start you wouldn’t approve of me, and I don’t really care what you think of me. But Draco does. So unless you wish to lose him I suggest we at least compromise to be civil around one another.”

Jerking his robes around, “What makes you think I care what Mr. Malfoy thinks?”

Giving him a look that clearly said he was a deeply stupid man, “You’re his godfather.”

Snape flinched back while she sighed with a shake of her head and followed after Draco, “He truly told you that?”

Not turning around, “Yes. He trusts me.”

Draco was banging his head lightly against the stone wall, sitting down in the corner of a dead end. He had no idea where he was at this point but he also didn’t care, “Stupid. Gryffindor. Wanna be.”

A gentle hand caught his head before he could bang it again and an angel knelt down next to him, “Is being a Gryffindor so bad?”

He pulled her into his lap, holding her tightly and burying his face in her mountains of curls before answering her question, “No.”

Smiling, leaning back as his fingers stroked her middle softly, “I see. It’s
just not for you.”

He sighed before moving her hair to the side and resting his chin on her shoulder, “I never act before thinking. I always plan everything to the smallest detail. That wasn’t planned.”

Raising an eyebrow, “Everything?”

He smirked evilly but decided he was safe now, he could tell her the rest of his secret, “I didn’t miscalculate that day when Potter got his revenge.” She raised an eyebrow, “I knew he was there and his little DA. I was counting on it.”

Blinking owlishly, “Then why-“

Sighing, “I wanted you to forgive me. And I knew apologies weren’t going to ever be enough.”

Brow furrowing together, “Draco you didn’t have to do that. I would have forgiven you eventually.”

Leaning his head against her cheek, “With time, yes. But I didn’t have time. I needed a catalyst to get this started and I’ve been...adjusting the plan as I went.”

Pursing her lips, “So you’re telling me the second time-“

Arguing, “That was an honest slip, which is why I didn’t go quietly.”

Giggling to herself, “The look on your face was incredibly funny.”

Snorting, “Not from my position.”

Teasing, “Over Harry’s knee?”

Digging his fingers into her sides, grinning when she started to giggle, “Wench.”
