Chapter 15
In Limbo and a Bit of Bad News
The five men sat in the Headmaster’s study chatting amicably after the plans made to start up a new pack. Draco cuddled into Harry as if it was the most natural thing to do. Harry beamed and continued his conversation with his god father.
“So Siri, how are things in limbo?” Harry asked. Draco looked up at Sirius in askance, also wanting to know about this limbo place, whatever that was…
“Well, I guess it is pretty much… well, dark and lonely for one thing. I hear voices in here once in a while, pretty much just harmless banter and information about the outside world. I have no clue who they are, though… Well, I guess for being stuck between worlds, it is ok…”
“Stuck between worlds?” Draco asked.
“Well, yes. The veil I fell through was a portal of sorts. It transports people to where it sees fit by looking into that individual’s memories and experiences. I guess you can say it has a mind of its own. Though, when I fell through, nothing was on my mind, for, well…. the spell. It would have killed me had I not fell through that portal. So, as I was saying, I had nothing on my mind, so I fell in and the veil did not know where I should be placed, so I was placed in limbo, a sort of loop between worlds.”
“So, can you… can you get out of the mirror, and, how can we see you in it??” Harry leaned forward in anticipation. Draco still staring captivated by the mirror, released Harry and leaned forward also.
“Well, as for you seeing me, it has nothing to do with the mirror, and everything to do with those voices. They told me I was needed, and pointed me, well, verbally, to this particular opening in the loop, small, I can not fit through it, but I can appear to others who are looking into the loop, in this case, Lupins’ mirror. As for getting out, that is the good part. See, this loop, while small now, is slowly expanding and stretching out, or so says the voices. I will be able to escape in, I believe it was two weeks…”
“Two weeks!!! That is great Sirius!!!” It was Lupin who had made the proclamation. He had been standing to the side of the mirror, now jumping from the shadows to congratulate his friend.
“Yes, wonderful,” Draco said.
Harry said nothing for he was holding back a sob that threatened to come out.
“Harry…. Are you… Ok?” Sirius looked at his god son, who had his head bent. Draco looked at his friend and once again cuddled to him, to comfort the ebony haired boy. The blond was somewhat surprised at the tenderness he was now bestowing upon his previous enemy.
“Fine, I am fine, just really happy..” Harry said after he collected himself and smiled up at his god father.
“Great, now we just have to wait a few weeks…” Sirius said, sounding a little upset. Then, he heard one of the voices.
“Hold on a second guys, I am needed for a moment.”
“Oh… ok Siri… Come back though.” Harry said, feeling his happiness fade a bit.
“Will do,” and with that said, Sirius disappeared into the darkness. The audience fell quiet and waited anxiously for the return of their friend.
Harry sat stiff on the chair with Draco rubbing his shoulder soothingly. Lupin stood by the mirror shifting from foot to foot in anticipation. Then, Sirius popped up, his face grave as he looked down at the other men in the room.
“What happened Sirius, what’s with the long face,” Lupin asked.
“We have a little problem guys.”
The three men all shifted uncomfortably where they stood. They all looked on in suspense.
“Well, tell us!!” They all said.
“It is about the pack arrangement, they tell me that there can not be two alphas in a pack, it would cause disorderly conduct and blah blah blah. I am sorry Harry, Lupin, only one of you may be the Alpha.”
“Well, how do we…. Decide who the leader will be, I want to be the leader, I think I am strong enough!!!” Harry said stubbornly.
Lupin frowned at Harry.
“I believe I would be the better leader, I am older, and far more experienced. No offense Harry, but, you are a child still. I am the headmaster here, I am a werewolf, I am a bit stronger.”
Harry glared at the older man, who glared right back. Draco knew no good would come of this, he moved toward the mirror containing Sirius.
“What do we do, they might just attack each other here and now!! I know a little about dogs… they will fight for dominance, no matter who their opponent is.” Draco whispered to Sirius.
“Well…. yes…. That was the plan.”
Draco looked at the man in shock.
“You mean… you mean they were supposed to fight each other???” Draco bit out harshly.
“It is how things are, I’m afraid. One of them has to come out on top, and the other will not be very happy about having to take orders. They will have to figure this out how dogs have been doing for centuries… They have to fight, and see who the better is, then the victorious male will lay claim to the title of the pack leader.”
The blond boy looked over at his mate in despair. Losing this fight would kill his spirit. But, surely, he can not fight his headmaster and teacher. That was just wrong!
Harry glowered at his headmaster and jumped up from the chair, startling all but Remus, who stood regally, arms crossed on his chest, smirking at the younger boy.
“Mr. Potter, don’t tell me you are challenging me for leadership. I am your friend, but I am also your superior, so just back down, I can take on the responsibility with great adequacy, I believe.”
“NO!! Headmaster, I will be a good, noble leader, I will protect my pack, I can do it myself!!”
Harry’s eyes began to glow in anger, his teeth extending to poke through his lips. Lupin smirked still and decided this just might have to be the day he let his werewolf take over. He did not really want to hurt the boy, but, he had to show his strength, his dominance.
“Harry, Headmaster, please, do-..”
“Shut the fuck up Drake!!!!” Harry roared, starting to circle Lupin.
Draco gasped in shock and anger. He seethed next to the mirror containing a startled Sirius.
‘I knew this was going to happen, but I did not know Harry would feel like taking out his anger on his mate. Draco is vulnerable now, this could hurt both of them.’ Sirius thought sadly as he looked up from Draco to see the two dog types circling the room, glaring daggers at each other. How dominance can change a relationship…. Horrible…
“What did I miss?”
Sirius and Draco whipped around to see Snape enter the chamber and freeze when he noticed the dogs about to, it seemed to him, tear each others throats out. Harry growling and Lupin smiling smugly.
“Snape, get out of there!!!” Draco yelled to his teacher. He would be killed if he got in their way, most likely by Harry, who, in his state, would do just about anything.
“What in the hell is going on in h-..” Snape started anxiously when he was cut off by a snarl by Harry, who turned his attention to the newcomer.
Harry charged the startled potion’s master in a blind rage.
Snape, completely taken off guard, did the only thing he could think of doing in the terror of the charging pupil…. He threw his arms up to protect his face. He closed his eyes in fear.
A collective gasp could be heard to all who were in the room….
“Nnnnooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Ohhhhhh, a cliffie!!! I am mean, yes, but it keeps things exciting I think. Sorry about making Harry a jerk in this chapter, but, well, fighting for dominance and having dog demon in ya does not make you a happy camper….. Well, hope you enjoyed. Oh, as for Lupin, he has every right to be smug, he has a powerful trait, remember?? He wants to be the leader just as badly as Harry does…..
