Chapter 15: Out with the old…
The man cornered him in the Great Hall after dinner one night.
\"Excuse us, Ron, Hermione. Do you mind if I speak to Harry for a moment?\"
He smiled wryly as the pair eyed him suspiciously, looking for Harry\'s nod of agreement before walking away, only to stand waiting in the entrance hall, watching.
He didn\'t blame them for being overprotective; the young man looked vastly different from the healthy, if unhappy looking boy he had met on his first week after accepting the post of potions master at Hogwarts. The young man who stared at him now had lost the roundness of boyhood; he looked tall and a little too thin. His hair was longer, dark and unwashed, hanging low and lank over his brow, shadowing the haunted green eyes.
Minerva had explained the situation with this Gryffindor. He had been told how the previous potions master had had an affair with this boy, who under more pressure then anyone could imagine since his childhood had allowed the teacher to take advantage of him. The headmaster, finding out about the affair, had fired the teacher and sent him away, but Harry, emotionally insecure and confused about his feelings was upset and wanted to follow the older man. As a result he was now watched and prevented from leaving. He was also allowed to miss potions, being understandably uncomfortable in the class his ex-lover had previously taught.
But Kasey Lewwellyn made up his own mind about things, and he saw a young man, upset and angry at being pushed around and controlled by people he had no means to oppose. He also saw a boy not abused and confused, but very obviously in love. He didn\'t judge the morality of the relationship; he had never met the previous potions master, nor did he know how or when the relationship had began, however he found the morality of keeping the young man prisoner against his will questionable.
However that was not his place. He was a teacher and he planned to teach.
\"Harry, as you probably know I am Professor Lewwellyn, currently filling in the post of Potions Master.\" The boy nodded suspiciously, but Kasey had noticed the flare of surprise in his eyes when he had said \"filling in\". He felt a moment of guilt; he didn\'t know if Severus Snape would ever return to re-claim the post and didn\'t like using the possibility to gain Harry\'s trust. But the gesture was sincere; he didn\'t expect to fill the post permanently, and did consider himself merely a substitute.
\"I\'ve heard the story, Harry,\" the man continued, resolving to be completely honest from now on, \"I don\'t pretend to know what you are going through, nor do I presume to judge you or a man I have never met, but I can guarantee you one thing, I\'m not trying to take over his place. I am here to teach potions because that is what I\'ve been asked to do. I understand your reluctance to attend my classes, and I will not force you to, but it has been several months now, and you are seriously falling behind. I would like it if you gave the class another go, and I also would be willing to give you extra tutorage until you catch up with the rest of your class, if you would like.\" He watched the impassive face stare back at him, noticing for the first time the dark bruised circles under the eyes and the pinched quality to the sunken cheeks. This boy was not well. After a few seconds the dark haired young man nodded silently and turned to join his waiting friends. Kasey cursed under his breath. He couldn\'t blame Harry for not trusting him, guessing he\'d been given ample reason to distrust his professors lately, but still he was disappointed.

Later that week Harry returned to potions. Kasey wasn\'t sure what had convinced him, but had an inkling it might involve the curly haired girl beside him who kept eyeing the boy as if worried he might change his mind and leave again at any second. Harry sat looking around the room, noting the changes. The intimidating atmosphere that Snape had favoured was gone. At least twice as many candles surrounded the room, and a large candelabrum hung from the ceiling. The desks too were rearranged, with the large round desks that seated three students each gone, replaced by long benches facing the front.
\"Today we will be continuing our study into medi-potions. Last week we looked at 5 different potions used to treat burns. You were asked to study the methods and look particularly for similarities and differences. Today you will be provided with all the ingredients used in those potions and you will develop your own potion for burns.\"
\"A large part of potions is being able to correctly follow directions to the word and concoct an accurate potion for a particular purpose. Another part is recognising what each component of a potion gives to the end product, so in the event you have a need for which no potion yet exists, or if you don\'t have access to a book of potions, you can concoct your own mixture to fulfil the purpose you require. Begin.\"
The tall man approached Harry, his blonde hair hanging down around his face; \"Harry I know you don\'t know what\'s going on here. Hermione and Ron both have lists of the potions studied last week so if you like you can work with them and just pay attention to the steps they follow to work out the ingredients to use in their own potions. And if you are interested in the tutorage I offered stay behind after class and we will work out a time.\"

He struggled to maintain his dislike for the man who had taken the place of Snape. Looking around the room he watched Neville for a second. The chubby boy actually laughed as he accidentally knocked over a bottle, spilling armadillo bile across the desk. Scooping up as much as he could he measured it and added it to his cauldron. Everywhere students looked happy, some even excited at the prospect of inventing their own potion. Lewwellyn strolled around the room, pausing here and there to ask why a student had chosen to use a particular ingredient.
\"Armadillo bile is used in all 5 of the potions we studied last week. It is a natural coolant and lubricant, and also anti-bacterial, helping to prevent infection.\" Harry\'s jaw dropped as the confident, intelligent answer spilled from Neville\'s mouth. Neville; who had barely passed potions in any of the previous 5 years of school.
He turned as he felt eyes on him. Hermione watched him silently. \"Well? Don\'t you know what to do without a book in front of you?\" She blushed but didn\'t reply, but Ron scowled at him, stopping with a wince when Hermione kicked him under the desk.
\"Sorry Hermione, that wasn\'t fair.\"
\"It\'s OK Harry. Why don\'t you take him up on his offer of tuition? You did want to be an auror, and you need to pass potions to do that. And Professor Lewwellyn is a good teacher.\" She looked at him, unsure and slightly nervous. Harry felt so guilty making her look like that that without thinking he agreed to accept tuition.

Kasey wasn\'t sure why Harry had decided to take him up on the offer of tuition. He obviously didn\'t want to be there. He was just barely polite, and he hardly seemed to take in anything the older wizard said. Finally, despite all efforts to ignore his behaviour, Kasey found himself becoming annoyed.
\"Harry I know what it\'s like to lose someone, but…\"
The green eyes turned on him, meeting his for the first time, Kasey was shocked at the hot sparks jumping in their depths; \"I didn\'t lose him, he was taken from me.\"
The young man stood, robes swirling around him as he spun out of the room.
