Rescue

Chapter 15 Rescue

“Lumos,” Hermione said lighting the tip of her wand.

The night sky was completely devoid of light. So much cloud cover was not uncommon in England, but why on a night like this would the sky be so ruthless as to drown the group of rescuers in total darkness? Harry, Ron, Hermione and Professor Snape walked side by side down the slope to the Forbidden Forest in silence.

Hermione’s breath was coming in shallow. Of course she was scared, but if Myrtle really was alive again, they had to try to save her. Unfortunately, Hermione’s righteous bravery suffered a cut each time she thought about the vision Severus had told her in the Room of Requirement. Could this night be her last?

Severus, too, was thinking about his vision. Cruel fate was once again going to take someone he loved away from him. And yes, he did love Hermione Granger. He mentally kicked himself for waiting so long to tell Hermione his feelings for her.

There had been several reasons to not say anything. She had been too young for starts. And there had been a lot of animosity between her friends and him. Severus was still not really sure that what they were doing was right. But this was not the time to think about such things. There was a rescue mission to be carried out.

Myrtle’s body lay only feet away from the Forbidden Forest. As the group came upon her, they could see that she had been beaten badly. Hermione rushed forward first, leaving the rest of the group behind her.

“Hermione, wait!” Severus called as he broke into a run after her.

Hermione reached down to touch Myrtle and was surprised to find the girl warm and breathing.

“Myrtle. Can you hear me? Are you alright?” Hermione asked the ghost turned girl.

“Hermione? Is that you?” Myrtle responded without moving.

“Yes, it’s me. Can you move?”

“Who is with you?” Myrtle asked.

“Professor Snape, Harry and Ron. Come on Myrtle. Let’s get you up,” Hermione said encouragingly.

“Where’s the Headmaster?” Myrtle asked.

“He’s gone to get help. Can you move at all?” Hermione asked again.

“Oh, I think I can manage,” Myrtle said as she looked up at Hermione.

A wicked looking grin played on Myrtle’s now pink lips. Hermione suddenly knew something was really wrong.

“Myrtle what have you done?”

“What I had to do, Hermione. What I had to do.”

Harry, Ron and Severus turned to point their wands at the Death Eaters who had silently slinked out of the forest while they were distracted by Myrtle. Hermione stayed perfectly still as she stared down the length of Myrtle’s wand.

“It’s good to be back!” Myrtle said with an evil laugh.
