Remus studied Luna out of the corner of his eye.
She seemed perfectly content with eating her sundae and ignoring him. As if he hadn’t hurt her just earlier that day.
After his anger died down, Remus had felt terrible for hurting Luna. Anger always brought forth so many regrets for Remus—it was one of the main reasons why he tried to keep such an iron clad control over it.
He knew that he would have to apologize to Luna. It was the only way he could back bring the somewhat strange harmony into their relationship.
Setting down his silverware, he turned to face Luna.
“Luna, can you meet me in our bedroom tonight after dinner?” Remus asked.
“No—to do that you would have to see me, and you made it very clear this morning that you have no desire to be around me any more than you have to.”
Luna continued to stare into the kitchen serenely, swinging her legs back and forth on her stool.
Remus was so shocked by the venom of the words being said in such a cheerful voice that he literally couldn’t speak.
Luna stood, pushing her empty bowl away and walked calmly out of the kitchen without saying goodbye.
Remus had never been talked to like that before. Most of the little friends and family that he had would smooth things over.
Not Luna.
She was holding him responsible for his words.
He found that strangely empowering. Luna was giving him a chance to take control for once. She was forcing him to choose whether or not he wanted to keep their relationship going.
And despite how odd he found her, he didn’t want to hurt her again.
Standing, Remus left the kitchen. He searched through a couple of rooms before finding her in the library with Ginny and Hermione.
Hermione was sitting on the floor near the book case with her knees to her chest with either girls on either side of her trying to comfort their friend.
All three women looked up at him when he walked in the doorway.
“Luna, we need to talk now,” Remus said firmly.
Luna frowned.
“I thought this was settled in the kitchen,” she said.
Remus could feel his face starting to flush with annoyance and embarrassment.
“I went a little overboard this morning and said some things that I shouldn’t have said. We really need to settle this, Luna—in private,” Remus stressed.
Luna said nothing. In fact, she wasn’t even looking at him. Instead she stood and looked down at Hermione once more.
“Don’t let Professor Snape bother you. When one has Biddybums flying out of their bums, they can’t help but be cranky,” she said in her dreamy voice.
Hermione gave Luna a small smile.
“Thanks, Luna,” she said softly.
Luna nodded and walked toward the doorway.
Remus stood in her way with his arms crossed.
“Can you move, please, Remus?” Luna asked politely.
“I won’t move unless we are both going to the bedroom,” Remus said.
“I don’t think I want to do that, Remus. Can you move, please?” she asked again.
Remus gave Luna a firm look.
“I am not moving until you agree to talk with me, Luna,” he said.
Luna stared at him, her dreamy expression firmly in place.
Without warning, she kicked him as hard as she could in the shin.
Remus fell to the floor with a grunt of pain.
“Luna!” Hermione squeaked.
“Bloody hell, Luna!” Ginny exclaimed, running to Remus to make sure that he was okay.
Luna walked out of the room calmly as if nothing out of the ordinary happened.
Remus briefly thanked Ginny before going after Luna.
He ended up finding her in the game room, laying out a game of solitaire on the table.
Remus stood in the door way and took a few moments to calm down. It was really difficult for him to do so what with the throbbing pain in his leg still prevalent.
“That was very childish of you,” he said, his voice betraying his anger.
Luna remained silent.
Remus let out a few deep breathes before continuing.
“I apologize for what I said to you this morning. These last few weeks have been hard for me and adding this forced bonding issue on top of it … I guess I just snapped.”
Luna paused in setting up the cards.
Remus watched as she cocked her head to the side and stared into space.
‘She’s not even listening to me,’ Remus thought in frustration, running his hands through his hair.
Luna nodded her head into the air. She set her cards down on the table and stood.
Remus watched wearily as she walked towards him.
Luna made it to him and wrapped her arms around him. Though Remus was still surprised by Luna’s strange mood swings, he allowed himself to rest in her embrace.
“You worry too much, Remus,” she said.
“Do you accept my apology?” Remus asked, ignoring her statement.
Luna pulled away slightly and looked at Remus, her eyes completely clear.
“What would happen if I didn’t accept your apology?” she asked.
Her question took him by surprise.
He never really questioned why people being mad at him bothered him so much. He just knew that it made him anxious.
Luna cupped his cheek in her hands.
“Are you afraid that you’ll lose another person who cares about you?”
Remus laughed nervously.
“I didn’t know you even cared about me that way, Luna,” he said.
Luna didn’t laugh with him. She continued to stare at him intently.
The tension in the room reached an unbearable level before Luna moved her hand away.
“Would you like to play Exploding Snap with me?” she asked, walking back to the table.
“Sure,” Remus agreed quickly.
Luna smiled and began to shuffle the cards.
Remus let out a sigh as he went to sit across from her.
Luna had hit a sore spot with asking him about his fears.
He wasn’t ready to bare his soul that way—all he really wanted to do was to apologize to Luna for his harsh words.
And as strange as Luna was, Remus knew that she understood his hesitance.
Luna began to deal the cards out.
Both her and Remus played cards well into the night.
