Chapter 14

Hydra flicked his silky brown hair out of his eyes with a practiced tilt of his head. He couldn't wait till the sorting. He knew he'd be in Slytherin just like his father and sister. Phoebus and Rosemary walk down the train looking for Hydra and Kaleb. Keleb taps Hydra on the shoulder, gesturing to the hall where their friends are.

"Should we let them in?" He asks, loud enough for Phoebus and Rosemary to hear.

Hydra grins.

"I don't know. Do you really think they deserve to be in our exalted presence?" He asked in a perfect immitation of his father, which he knew annoyed Rosemary.

Rosemary purses her lips then opens the door quickly then rests her fingers to her head closing her eyes.

"I see a piano about to fall onto the oversized noggen of yours Hydra." Phoebus smiles at Hydra.

Hydra grins, first to Rosemary, then to Phoebus. Kaleb just rolls his eyes.

"And how." Hydra began, taking Phoebus' hand theatrically. "is the fair maiden today?" Both he and Kaleb smirk to Rosemary before turning back to Phoebus.

Phoebus giggles and sits next to Hydra.

"Im fine." Rosemary steps in and sits down next to Kaleb.

Kaleb's excitement at finally being at the school that educated both his adoptive parents is kept tightly under wraps, a trait he learned from his father, Severus.

"What house do you think you'll be in, Rosemary?" Rosemary smiles.

"I believe i will be in Gryfindoor and i think my dear Phoebe will be joining me." Hydra smirked, flipping his hair back.

"Typical. No ambition. That's a Slytherin quality." He said, still seeming slightly unused to his rather large vocabulary.

Kaleb just smiled enigmatically. He had a sneeking suspicion one or both of his twin friends would be surprised at the sorting.

"I'll be in Slytherin, of course." Hydra said with the air of a Lord.

"As will Kaleb. We'll be sure to wave to you every so often so you don't feel too lost among those empyt headed lions."

"Hydra." Kaleb stated mildly. "what would your mother say?" Rosemary grins.

"She would smack him over the head for acting like his father." Phoebus bites his lip as he looked at Hydra.

He liked Hydra but the bit about him acting like Uncle Draco made him feel sick to his stomach.

"My father," Hydra stated imperiously, "Is the Malfoy and a Malfoy behaves befitting his station." he finished, sounding more he was repeating something said to him time and again that like he actually believed it. "And my mother is a special kind of Gryffindor." Kaleb shrugged.

Growing up with Severus and Phasma, he wasn't overly biased, though Slytherin tended to have the type of people who weren't afraid to bend rules if it suited them. Then again, so were Gryffindors, but the Slytherins were smart enough not to get caught. Rosemary gets up and slaps Hydra over the head.

"Maybe he needs some good hitting to get him off that track." Phoebus gasps and gently wraps his arms around Hydra.

"Rosie dont hurt Hydra."

"He's sensitive." Hydra grins until he hears the last words.

"Sensitive? I'm not *sensitive*! I'm....I'm....er"

"Delicate." Kaleb supplied, earning a glare from the young Malfoy.

Rosemary giggles.

"As delicate as a daisy." she waves her wand making a daisy appear in his hair.

Phoebus couldnt help the giggle that errupted from him. Kaleb waved his own rowan wand, effortlessly converting the daisy into a Narcissus.

"That's more like it. Vain git." Hydra stuck his tongue out at Kaleb and reached between himself and Phoebus to get his wand before blinking as something occured to him.

"Hey! Phoebus is a boys name!" Kaleb rolled his eyes.

"Thank you Captain Obvious." Hydra doesn't even bother to glare.

"We can't go calling you Phoebus if you're dressed like that!" Rosemary rolls her eyes.

"Thats why i called him Phoebe." Phoebus bites his lip and looks at them.

"Do i look convincing?" Kaleb looked pointedly to Phoebus' stuffed bra.

"Not in the least." He said, but without cruelty.

"Overcompensating will only bring you unwanted attention." Hydra poked one stuffed cup.

"What would you want those for anyway? They seem terribly inconvenient." Phoebus looks at himself then looks at them slightly paniced.

"Then what do i do?" Kaleb smiled.

He had some small experience with this since Phasma still liked to go out in style every once in a while. Half an hour later, Most of Phoebus' makeup was gone, as was the padded bra and most of the product from his hair. Now his silky tresses flowed and the lines of his body looked feminine, yet natural.

"You'll have to make your own decision about the clothing, but my personal advice is to steer clear of anything too...sluttish. Male or female, you don't want that kind of attention." He sated, remembering his Dad's advice.

Hydra simply watched, entranced by the transformation from boy to girl. Phoebus looked at himself then smiles brightly.

"Thanks Kaleb." he hugs him close to see if it felt like a womans body.

Kaleb stiffens, but pats Phoebus on the back.

"Er. No worries." He stated awkwardly.

He loved his friends dearly, but he'd never been a very physical person. Hydra came up behind Phoebus and ran his hands over the boy's sides.

"Wow. Kaleb, you're good." Phoebus gasps and blushes red as Rosemary stands up.

"Leave Phoebe alone Hydra." Hydra grins and seats himself again, crossing his already long legs.

Kaleb, too, sat down his black slacks whispering over his legs. Rosemary sits down next to Kaleb as Phoebus sits down.

"Should we get into our uniforms?" Kaleb nods and they pull down their respective trunks.

Kaleb's is made of dark wood, with black leather accents and brass buckles. Hydra, on the other hand, has a deep green burnish with silver buckles in a snake pattern. Rosemary helps Phoebus with his which was white wood with gold plating. Once Phoebus has his she turns and opens her which was dark oak and silver plating. Once dressed, Hydra's head perked up and he glanced out the window.

"I think we're slowing down." Kaleb nodded.

"We've been travelling for a long time. We're probably there by now." Rosemary buttons her skirt as Phoebus finished up his shirt.

Phoebus smiles.

"Im kinda nervous but excited." Kaleb patted Phoebus lightly on the shoulder.

"You'll be fine. No one will be able to tell you're a boy unless you tell them." He briefly touched the boy's hair.

"I love your hair." His own was wavy brown only a shade or two darker than his chocolatey skin.

Phoebus smiles softly.

"Thanks." Rosemary shakes her head at them as the train comes to a stop.

As the students filed out of the train, a woman in periwinkle robes with a white parasol called out to the crowd.

"First years, this way please! First years!" Hydra raised an eyebrow.

"What happened to Hagrid?" Kaleb rolled his eyes.

"He retired a while after your sister graduated. That's Professor Hawthorne. She teaches Care of Magical Creatures now, I understand." Rosemary looks at her then takes Phoebus's hand.

They walk towards the boats. Once Rosemary touches the boat her eyes glaze over as Phoebus knew she was having a vision. Slowly Rosemary came out of it with a slight giggle.

"Dahlia... she was in this boat looking very green." Kaleb looked on with great interest.

"What was that?" he asked, though he thought he might know.

He could remember similar instances from when they'd all been young, but no one had ever told him. Hydra didn't even look.

"A delicate lady cannot be expected to endure such things easily." He said.

He'd always admired Dahlia's ability to appear calm and composed no matter what, but even he knew no one could be so all the time. Rosemary slowly gets into the boat with Phoebus, Kaleb, and Hydra. Professor Hawthorne, her red-gold hair gathered atop her head in a knot, bowed in acknowledgement to Kaleb. With his father as the Headmaster, he knew all the teachers at least by sight. Once all the students were in the boats, She took a small one for herself and they shoved off. Hydra's excitement was palpable: he couldn't seem to sit still. He drummed his fingers on his bent knee and his eyes darted around restlessly. It made Kaleb tired just watching. Rosemary holds Phoebus's hand the whole way across the water. Rosemary turns and looks at Hydra.

"Will you stop figeting your making the boat rock." Hydra stilled immediately, annoyed with himself for being so childish.

Once the boats reached the far shore, Professor Hawthorne lead them into a small room where Severus waited.

"Students. Welcome to Hogwarts." He gave Kaleb a barely perceptable nod in greeting, which his stoic son returned before continuing on to explain how the sorting should go.

Then, all the first year students were lead out before the rest of the school in the great hall and the Headmaster began to call out names. Rosemary held Phoebus's hand tighter as he was shaking like a leaf. Severus had been told to call him Phoebe but would he slip up? After a while, Patterson, Carol was sent to Hufflepuff and Severus offered what was -for him- an encouraging nod to Phoebus.

"Potter, Phoebe." He stated blandly, giving it no more accent than he had any of the other students.

There was still a susurration of whispers at his name. Despite the years since the False Lord's defeat, the Potter name was still revered. The wrinkled hat was sat on his head. It waved it's tip about slowly as though thinking.

"Well this is unexpected." It said. "Regardless, GRYFFINDOR!" it shouted.

Phoebus smiles brightly and gets up and waves to his sister before taking a seat with the other gryfindoors. The entire table erupts into raucus cheers and Phoebus is greeted by several second and third-year girls like an old friend. Severys clears his throat and the room settles a bit.

"Potter, Rosemary." Rosemary steps up and easily sits down.

The hat mumbled over Rosemary's mind for a long while.

"You've the makings of a great witch, my girl. Very great indeed...You would, perhaps do well in any of the houses. But I see your devotion to your sibling rules you. And so it shall be GRYFFINDOR!" it yelled again.

Once again the Gryffindor table exploded into sound, the hufflepuffs grumbling about luck and breeding and the Slythierins and Ravenclaws remaining tactfully silent. Rosemary walks over and sits next to Phoebus pulling him close. Hydra squirmed under the Headmaster's regard and Kaleb grinned. His father could be a right prat when he wanted to be. After Rimes, Darrel, Radley, Kimberly, and Sikes, Jason, it was finally his turn.

"Snape, Kaleb." Severus called and Kaleb stepped quietly up and took the hat without comment.

It grumbled about his obvious procifiency in occlumency at such a young age, but relented when Kaleb dropped his shields.

"Rather complex young thing, aren't you?" it asked, but waited only a moment more without answer before shouting "SLYTHERIN!" The Slytherin table broke out into restrained calls and clapping and Kaleb allowed himself a small smile.

His father gave him a tiny congratulatory nod and he made his way to his peers. Rosemary claps happily along with Phoebus. After an Ulrich and several Zabini's, Severus glanced up to a red-faced Hydra with a look of surprise.

"Mr. Malfoy. It seems as though your name has been misplaced to the last on the list. If you would please?" Hydra growled, but sat on the little stool.

Like his father, the hat had barely touched his head before announcing his house. Unlike his father, what it shouted was "RAVENCLAW!" The middle table closest to the Slytherins clapped and whistled for him, but he felt only shock.

Ravenclaw? But...he was a Slytherin! He numbly made his way among the blue-scarved mass, Kaleb offering him a sympathetic look over the other students. What....was he doing in Ravencalw? Rosemary had a grin on her face. Serves him right. All his bolstering had just landed him in the brainiac house not the cunning house like his father. Phoebus bites his lip before looking at Hydra. He knew that Hydra wanted to be in Slytherin. After a short concise speach, and a bone-chilling warning about the consequences of entering the Forbidden Forest, the students ate. Full and sleepy, the Headmaster dismissed the children, cautioning the prefects to keep track of the first years. Hydra heard none of it. Kaleb squeezed his arm, offering a small smile before a beautiful dark-haired witch with a green and gold prefects badge lead him away. Phoebus steps over.

"Hydra..." Hydra flips his hair back, lifting his chin.

"Yes, Phoebe?" He asks, careful to remember his friend's taken name.

Phoebus steps over.

"Are you alright? I know how much you wanted to be in Slytherin." Hydra blinks and takes a deep breath before responding with his usual arrogance.

"Alright? Why wouldn't I be? The hat recognized that I'm ten times more inteligent than the rest of the morons in this school. Our boarding party excluded, of course. We are the best, Phoebe." He said with the air of someone confiding a great lesson.

"Kaleb is the cleverest, I am the most intelligent, you are the bravest and your sister is the most reckless." He grinned and it was obvious he would be fine, though the disappointment still stung.

Phoebus bit his lip.

"Do you need a hug?" Hydra sneered.

"A hug? Do I look like a Hufflepuff to you?" but he glanced around fervently and, finding no one looking, pulled Phoebus into a tight embrace.

When he noticed a Gryffindor glance over, he pulled away slowly, patting Phoebus on the back.

"There there, Phoebe. You'll be fine." Phoebus smiles and nods then gently held his hand squeezing it.

"If you want to talk you know where to find me." He let go running towards where Rosemary was waiting.

Hydra gave a tight nod before turning to find the Ravenclaw prefect waiting for him.
