Change will Come
A/N: Ok, here it is. The next chapter. I am sorry it has taken so long. These chapters are getting harder and harder to write! Thank you so much for reading and sticking with me! Thanks for your suggestions, I will try to make them come into play here soon. On we go..
Ch. 14 Change will Come
To say that Draco was nervous was an understatement. Tonight was important, and he wanted everything to go perfectly.
It had been exactly one year since Hermione and he had their first date. He smiled remembering that night, oh man it had been great and crazy.
His put his hands in his pocket and palmed the ring box that was concealed there. He was taking her to the same restaurant they had eaten at on that first date, and he was going to propose.
He knew that Hermione loved him, but would she be willing to partner with him for life? Possibly be mother to his..no their children?
He took a deep breath and rang the doorbell. She answered looking every bit as radiant as she did one year ago, if possible even more so.
She beamed at him, then knit her eyebrows together quizzically. “Why didn’t you just floo or apparate in like normal, silly?” Her eyes twinkled with amusement.
He cleared his throat, “Because this is a special evening, my Hermione. You look stunning.”
She blushed at his compliment and locked the door behind her. Arm in arm, they walked to the apparition point.
Draco kept looking at Hermione. It could just be his own nerves, but she looked just as nervous as he was. She was currently staring off into space, not paying attention to where she was going.
“Hermione, are you ok?” he asked her seriously, stopping their walk. She squeezed his hand. “Yes, I’m fine, thank you.”
He kissed her palm and held her close as they journeyed through the air to their destination.
Looking up at the restaurant, Hermione smiled and hugged Draco. She had loved eating here and was hoping to come back.
They entered the establishment and went to one of the many doors. Just as they were about to enter, Hermione grabbed Draco’s arm.
“Wait. I-I need to tell you something before we go in.” Draco turned to her at once, concern storming in his silver eyes.
“What is it?” he asked, rubbing her cheek with his thumb. Whatever this was, it was no small thing. She was having trouble revealing something to him, and that made Draco uneasy.
She bit her lip and a tear leaked from her tightly closed eyes. Draco pulled her close. “Oh love, what’s the matter?” He stroked her hair and rocked her gently there in the middle of the restaurant’s hallway.
Hermione slowly lifted her head and regained her composure. She took Draco’s hand and led him to the door. “Here, let me show you.”
They walked through the door and Draco looked around for any clue as to why Hermione was so uncharacteristically melancholy. It looked like a normal, muggle kitchen. Not too unlike her own.
Then his eyes caught it, at the table were placed two chairs, and one highchair. Draco’s heart skipped a few beats. He turned to Hermione to find her looking at her shoes, silent tears streaming down her cheeks.
“I’m pregnant, Draco.” She whispered, as if afraid he would hear her. When she dared to look up, she found Draco white as a sheet.
He slowly came up to her and gave her a shy smile. “Really?” he asked her gently. She nodded her head.
He placed his hand over her still flat abdomen, imagining it swelling with their child. Their child…beneath his hand a new life was blossoming. He felt the tears prickle his eyes.
Looking up into Hermione’s anxious face, he blurted out, “Marry me, Hermione.” She frowned and stepped away from him.
“No.” she said, her voice trembling. Draco started to approach her, but she shook her head. “I do not wish to marry someone out of obligation, Draco.”
He laughed, in spite of himself. “Oh, Hermione, love. I am not asking you because of the baby.”
She huffed at him, cynically. “Yeah right. Would you have asked if I had not said anything to you?” She was crying in earnest now.
Draco reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring. “Yes I would have, I had planned on doing it tonight. Your news of our child coming is just the best bonus to my plans.”
He got down on one knee and stared into Hermione’s eyes, both had their faces streaming with tears. “Hermione, wil-----“ he began to choke on his words. He couldn’t get them out.
She launched herself into his arms, finally convinced of his sincerity. “Yes.” She laughed, “of course”
They eventually tucked into their spaghetti dinner, though neither would ever remember what food was served, they were too overcome with joy.
