Chapter 14: Life is a bitch.
Severus Snape apparated at the edge of a riverbank strewn with garbage. He looked around with distaste, his usual sneer marring his mouth. He had just taken in the sight when a loud crack from behind him gave him a slight start. He was expecting Narcissa Malfoy, but the sudden noise played with his already frayed nerves. Narcissa took in the sight of the river, lifted her nose in the air, and gave a loud huff.
"Really Severus, why did you want me to follow you here? It’s always filthy, and very unbecoming for a Malfoy, let alone a proper woman". Narcissa stated haughtily, a grimace coming across her pale face. She then looked down at the dark mud around the soles of her shoes, and let out another loud huff as she lifted her foot and tried to shake the mud off. "And, what is that awful smell? It smells almost like.... well, it's just too un-lady like to mention"!
Snape looked at his company for a moment with his mouth slightly agape, then shut it sharply, his teeth making a 'clack'. He shook his head at her attitude and the way she acted. 'One would think she wouldn't worry so much about her surroundings if she was actually interested in finding her son', Snape thought to himself bitterly. "Narcissa, this way, and quickly".
Narcissa started after him, trudging up the bank to the road at the top. They went through an opening in the guardrail, and started to walk. Snape kept a swift, steady pace, his robes billowing behind him. Narcissa shorter legs caused her to follow as what she thought of as an undignified trot. 'Malfoys do not trot', she thought to herself. She finally caught up with him as they made it to another street a block over from the road, and turned on it. She grabbed his elbow to slow him down. "Really Severus, slow down, what is your hurry"!
"If you have not noticed Narcissa, this is a muggle neighborhood. By the way we dress, we stick out like a proverbial sore thumb". Snape hissed as he began his fast pace again up the street.
"Well, no wonder it's filthy, it's a muggle neighborhood. I bet all the smaller towns are like this"! Narcissa exclaimed in another huff and continued to follow. "Really, there's places in London just as bad, I should have expected it"! At this, the heel of her shoe caught in the brick of the street, and made her dive forward in an undignified stumble before she righted herself. She quickly looked around to see if anyone saw her blunder, face turning red, then soldiered on.
"Do be careful Narcissa, I would not want to be picking you up out of the middle of the street". Snape drawled with an evil smirk. 'It would serve her right to fall on her arse, the snooty bitch', Snape thought.
Narcissa looked horrified that he had seen her stumble. She could feel the blood rushing to her face again, her ears turning red. She would never live this down, she thought. At this, she saw Severus turn another corner and head down another street with a large chimneystack looming in the distance. 'Ah yes, almost there', and at this thought, a large gust of wind tore through her hair, making her look as she just had a two-day shag. She gave a loud whimper, threw her hands over her head to try holding down the mess of hair, and made a mad dash to Snapes house. When she was within three feet of the steps, her foot landed in something very soft. She looked down and to her horror had steeped into a pile of Dog excrement. It just could not get any worse in her eyes, and she broke down again, crying out in another over-dramatic bawl. This time however, Snape didn't run to her, and if anything, he slowed down while taking in the sight.
When Snape did finally walk over to her, he couldn't resist the remark that came forth. "Narcissa dear, you are making a scene, and no less, in front of muggle’s who will find this most amusing".
Narcissa quickly turned her glare at Severus, her mouth gaping open and closed like a fish out of water. She had never been so embarrassed in her life. 'The indignity of it all', she thought. She could picture herself looking worse than a Weasley at the moment. "Severus, get this door open now"! She hissed out, with as much anger as she could muster. She then bent over, took off the offending shoe, and threw it at him. Snape merely stepped to the side, her shoe landing in the street. She then balled both of her tiny fists up, hobbled past him with a loud huff, and retrieved her shoe, but only after using a quick 'scourgify' on them both. She then turned on her heel, and marched inside the open door that Snape held open for her, while having a slight grin on his face.
Narcissa marched straight into the dusty sitting room at Spinners End. It was small and crowded, mostly with books stacked here and there. She cast a cleaning charm on the couch before she sat, then looked at Snape through squinting eyes. "Well, since you brought me here, at least you could do is offer me a drink"!
"Yes, yes, that I can do", Snape said as he proceeded to fetch a bottle of wine and two glasses from the kitchen cupboard. He poured the two glasses and set one in front of Narcissa who looked to be well put-upon at the moment. "Narcissa, we need to talk about Draco, or what he may have done".
Narcissa looked at Snape for a good moment then asked, "Severus, what do you mean by 'what he may have done'"?
"Well, I am not for sure of this mind you, but there is a strong possibility that he has left and joined Potter and the light side". Snape said evenly as he watched Narcissa's reaction. He could have sworn he seen the corners of her mouth curve upwards momentarily.
"So, you think he has defected? Why haven't you turned this news over to the Dark Lord Severus"? Narcissa cautiously asked.
"Narcissa, I am going to tell you something today that you may not at first believe, but I assure you is the truth. I am a spy for the Order of the Phoenix". There, he had said it. He gripped his wand in his robes, getting ready for any sudden movement of Narcissa's.
She stared at Snape for several moments, contemplating her reply. "Bella always did say you were, but I had my doubts by the way you spoke of the Potter boy. Why would you spy for Dumbledore if you despise the boy so"?
"That is personal Narcissa and I shant discuss it". Snape replied in a cold voice. However, it did not stop Narcissa as she was used to this from Lucius.
"Well, how am I supposed to believe you if you can not discuss your reasons Severus? I do believe I know why myself, and I don't think I will hit very far from the mark. It's Lily isn't it? We're in the same little town in which she grew up in as we speak".
Snape gave her a glare full of malice, got up from his chair, and began to pace in what was left of the sitting room floor that was uncluttered. "I loved her Narcissa, and she threw me down for James Potter. The bane of my existence since I started at Hogwarts"!
"Oh, is that so. That's not how I remember it at all Severus, and if you remember, I was there too. She started distancing herself from you when you began befriending Mulciber and Avery while studying dark magic. The final straw, if I recall, was when you called her a mudblood, and Potter washed your mouth out over it. You see Severus, she told me about the whole ordeal afterwards. I also know how you have treated her son since his first day at Hogwarts. So tell me, why did you turn spy for the Order"? Narcissa primly asked.
Snape sharply turned to stare at Narcissa over her comment. He didn't know that she knew about that ordeal at all. "I changed sides when I found out that the Dark Lord was going to target the Potters if you must know. I did not want to see her killed"!
"Ah, so you didn't mind that her husband and son would be murdered, just that you save her then? That really makes me trust you Severus, or trust whether you would do the right thing about saving my son from whatever he has gotten himself into. Always the Slytherin, save your own neck first. However, I do not know how one could have enough hate in them to hate a one-year-old child who is innocent. That makes me not trust your motives Severus, and I wonder what you want with Draco? Maybe train him to be a spy like you, and place him in more danger than he could be now? I don't think so Severus, I let Lucius by with way too much, and I will not stand for Draco to be led astray again". Narcissa said as she thought for a moment. "Or is it, that you know that because Draco likes his own gender, you're afraid he might be with the Potter boy in that fashion"?
Snape scowled at Narcissa then. He couldn't imagine what the two boys might get up to, but he would see to it, if he could, that they would not be together. That thought had not really crossed his mind, but the more he thought of it, it had some merit by the way both boys acted around each other. All he was worrying about was finding Draco, that Pensieve, and those memories. "Narcissa, I can assure you that I have thought no such thing. I however am worried about Draco's whereabouts. I am also worried about the missing pensieve and what all it could cause for all of us".
"I think I may get the gist of it now. You're only worried about what those memories will show of what you've done, and you're afraid what will happen if they get out. Again, saving your own neck, while not worrying about anyone else. My loyalties lie with my son Severus, if that's what you want to know. I will not help you find him in order to get the pensieve back at any cost. Besides, if he has left with the Potter boy, which I feel there is a good chance, every memory will already be out. If you were foolish enough to put the truth of you telling the Dark Lord about the prophecy in with it, you brought this on yourself. Also, if Potter is as powerful as you say he is, I will not stand between you and he. You brought this onto yourself Severus, and I will not allow you to drag Draco and myself into your battle with Potter. All I care for at the moment is that my son is safe. If he is, then so be it. He's way better off now than where he was headed". Narcissa calmly explained this as she looked at her nails and checking her manicure. "I will not speak of nothing we have discussed today Severus. Just know that I will go where my son goes to protect him. I have never agreed with Lucius's power hungry beliefs as I was forced to marry into them. I do not regret getting Draco out of the bargain, and he is the only one I care about out of it. I love my son Severus, and if he joined Potter, then so be it, I hope he has".
Snape looked at Narcissa in disbelief. He could see now that he would not be getting any help from her like he thought. He thought momentarily about using the memory charm on her, but then thought better of it. He still may need her help if he located the whereabouts of Draco. "That is fine Narcissa, and it's very admirable of you. If you don't mind, I need to follow you back to the manor as I left my belongings there. I need to pick them up and I shall return here. I will try to locate Draco, and I will let you know what I find out". Snape finished and held out his hand to Narcissa to help her to her feet.
Snape and Narcissa left Snapes home and walked to the old mill where the large chimney stood. There, away from any muggles, they disapparated, heading back to Malfoy Manor.

Albus Dumbledore was getting more perturbed as the day went on. Not only had he been caught embezzling money from Harry Potter by the goblins, he was taken into ministry custody by the aurors for questioning. He knew he had to think fast, and that with all the commotion happening at the ministry, the political climate was changing drastically. He didn't figure that Fudge would be in office much longer, and that may be his way out. If he could persuade Fudge to fill the coffers of Harry's account back to where it was before, he would slither his way out of trouble. He figured he could use Voldermort being back as a way to convince Fudge he was actually doing good for the boy. He had been sitting in a small interrogation room with a table and three chairs for over two hours since his overnight stay at the ministry, and finally someone started to enter the room. When he looked up, it was to see the head auror, Rufus Scrimgeour loping into the room. He stopped to look at Albus for a short moment, and then continued to sit in a chair opposite the old headmaster.
"Albus Dumbledore, I would never have figured you to be brought up on charges of embezzlment, and from Harry Potter no less. Tell me Albus, did you do it"? Scrimgeour gruffly asked.
"Ah, there seems to be a problem of what I've done being intentional or not. I would like a private meeting with Cornelius if that is possible Rufus, as what you want to ask is highly confidential, and top secret here within the ministry as it has to do with Voldermort". Albus calmly said, the lie coming out, as any truth would have.
"Yes, yes, Cornelius. Well, there is a problem then you see Albus, Cornelius Fudge is no longer the Minister for Magic. It seems that someone showed some memories through a pensive to the public at Diagon Alley just an hour ago, and implicated Fudge and Delores Umbridge in trying to have our young Mr. Potter killed by having those Dementors sent to Little Whinging. Umbridge showed up sending curses at the last memory being viewed on a huge screen on the Gringotts building, and then took flight when the citizens tried to capture her. The same citizens, several hundred as a matter of fact, came here to the ministry demanding Fudge be placed under arrest for helping Umbridge, who as a matter of fact, was shown to be a death eater. Fudge is now in a holding cell, and Umbridge is on the run. I have been placed in Fudges position as temporary minister until the elections can be held. So, what you could have spoken with Fudge about, you now can with me". Scrimgeour explained as he looked over his glasses at Dumbledore seemingly studying his actions.
"Is that so? Well, I didn't think he would be in office much longer, as I knew he tried to cover up Voldermort being back for over a year now. Anyhow, about our young Harry, what I say here minister is between us, and should not leave this room. The money I supposedly took was spent to protect Mr. Potter since he was left with his relatives in Surrey. I made him well aware of this, and I had to do it the way I did to keep his relatives from finding out that he had the money he did, or they would have tried to take it. The goblins will not let this rest, and they demand the money be put back. Since the ministry should have been the one actually protecting our young Mr. Potter all of these years, and the damage it has caused his reputation by Cornelius's lies in the Daily Prophet, I was going to see to it that the ministry pay Mr. Potter back what they owe him. His money has been used to fight Voldermort, and the remaining death eaters, instead of the ministry doing it. I don't think the ministry would fare too well at all if this came out do you Rufus"?
Scrimgeour bristled at this. "Are you trying to blackmail the ministry Dumbledore? I will not allow someone to come in and run roughshod over me on my first day as the minister! Where do you think this money will come from Dumbledore"?
"Ah, but you see Rufus, those few hundred that just came to chuck out poor Cornelius, would most likely think different if they new that our Mr. Potter was having to finance the war against Voldermort from his own pocket. All this, while the ministry set back and did nothing, which mind you, is exactly what has happened. Now if the same public knew this was brought to the knowledge of the new minister, and he did nothing, what would you suppose would happen? I am only trying to help you here Rufus, I do want you to know this". Dumbledore replied with a slight grin.
"Very well then, where do you suppose I can come up with these funds? There is a little over 1.2 million galleons to be accounted for! This can't just be rushed through Dumbledore, the Wizengamot will catch it". Scrimgeour Growled out. "Also, what do I get out of this arrangement? Can you have the Potter boy come by the ministry and show his support to calm the people down"?
"Rufus, the funds are easily obtainable. Simply take them from the funds of some of the convicted death eaters. The Lestranges would be the best, as they would give every knut they had to Voldermort’s cause. I know they have the gold to pay for it, and more. This you can legally do, calling it war reparations. Bellatrix did after all kill Harry's godfather, Sirius Black". Dumbledore explained. "Since I am now over the Wizengamot again, I can rush this through very quickly; today as a matter of fact. As to your last question, I think I can persuade Harry to work with the ministry, you have my word on this".
"Ok, ok, you win Dumbledore. Get this done TODAY, not tomorrow or the next. I want to see Potter here, and maybe give a speech with him by my side as soon as possible. I want you to make this all happen Dumbledore; you do not want to cross me. I am letting you go over this, but the money has to be taken care of today"! Scrimgeour exclaimed as he got up, limping slightly to the door, opened it, and slammed it shut, leaving Dumbledore to his thoughts.

There were two loud cracks that signaled the arrival of three wizards in Godrics Hollow. The wizards apparated behind a small copse of trees just outside the town. The three then began their short walk down the narrow winding road to the town itself. As they walked to the town’s center, one noticed a war memorial in the town square, and made his way over to it as the other two followed. As the first walked up to the memorial, the obelisk changed into a statue of a man, a woman, and a child, who the woman was holding, wrapped in a blanket. The man had a messy head of hair and glasses. The woman had long flowing hair with a gentle face and eyes. The baby looked as all babies do, beautiful to anyone who looked upon them. As the first wizard seen this, he turned to the other two.
"Remus, this is dad and mum"? Harry asked with a trembling voice. He then turned back around to stare at the statue and the baby that was meant to be him. The people in the statue looked exactly like his parents did in the wizarding photos he had.
"Yes Harry, this was constructed shortly after your parents were killed. I think the ministry paid to have it made as Fudge had just come into office at the time. They do look just like James, Lily, and you. Of course most all wizarding statues do". Remus replied under his breath. It always hurt to stand here and look at the statue of his best friends, while knowing all too well what had happened to them.
Draco walked up behind Harry and wrapped his arms around his waste. "Harry, it's all right. They did you a service by this; not allowing anyone to forget the sacrifice your parents gave to save you from Voldermort. We will stay here as long as you want". He whispered in Harry's ear while resting his chin on Harry's shoulder.
"Thanks Draco, I don't know what I would do without you". Harry said with a sigh. "I think we should go on to the cemetery as I want to look around for my other relatives while I'm here. I'm wondering if any of the Peverell's are buried here"?
Remus came over to stand beside Harry and pat him on his other shoulder. "I'm not sure about the Peverell's Harry, but some of your fathers family is buried here, along with Dumbledore’s. Come on then, let's get going before it gets too late".
At this, all three wizards began walking towards an old church at the end of the small town. The church was like many small churches in England, made of stone with stained glass windows. It had a cemetery beside it with graves looking to be hundreds of years old. They went on through the gate and into the cemetery itself. Harry slowly made his way through the rows of headstones and monuments looking at the names of the long since dead. He seen the names of the Bones family, and wondered if they were kin to Susan, a girl at Hogwarts he knew fairly well. Harry kept walking until he came across the name Dumbledore. He then started looking at who was buried here. Sure enough, there was Ariana Dumbledore, Albus's sister, and her mother lay beside her. They were old graves, but just past them was one extremely old one. He noticed what looked to be a circle at the top of the headstone with what looked to be a triangle around it. He kneeled down and began to scratch the moss from the weathered stone, and saw what he thought he had saw all along. It was the symbol of the Deathly Hallows, and the grave he saw belonged to Ignotus Peverell, his great, great, many times over grandfather. He understood why Dumbledore had buried his mother and sister here. It was over his hunt for the Deathly Hallows, or an obsession it looked to him like. He then turned and waved Draco and Remus over to him.
"Hey guys, over here. Come take a look at what I found right over from Dumbledore’s mother, Kendra. Its Ignotus Peverell's grave, my great something grandfather. Look at his headstone, and tell me what you see"? Harry asked.
After both Draco and Remus came over to Harry, their jaws dropped open at the carved symbol on the headstone. "Harry, you know that this confirms a lot". Draco replied as he looked on in awe at the grave. "I notice Dumbledore buried his mother and sister here close to Ignotus. I think he has always had a fixation with the Hallows myself. I think we can for sure say that Dumbledore and Grindelwald's quest for the Hallows had a lot of merit".
"Yes, and I'll about guarantee you that Dumbledore’s wand is one of the Hallows like we thought. I would say Grindelwald found it, and Dumbledore won it when he dueled him the last time. It explains a lot as to why he is as powerful as he is". Harry commented as he stood up and conjured some flowers for his long dead ancestor. After he placed the wreath of roses on the grave he turned to Draco and Remus. "Come on, let's visit my Parents".
Remus led both boys on back into the cemetery to where the newer graves were located. Harry saw two white marble headstones in the distance, and somehow he knew where they were heading. Sure enough, Remus led them to the same set Harry had seen. Harry had seemed to feel a pull towards them as soon as he saw them. As he made it to the graves, he kneeled down and began to shed his tears. Here lay his parents who Harry was denied to ever know by a madman, and a prophecy, which he wasn’t for sure, was even valid. At this, Remus and Draco stepped back allowing Harry some privacy with his parents.
"Mum, dad, I'm finally here! Nobody offered to bring me until now, and Remus brought me today. He has been watching over your graves, and he thought that Dumbledore had already brought me to see you. Mum and dad, Dumbledore is not who he has seemed to be to all of us. In a way, I think he is almost as dangerous as Voldermort. He has kept a lot of things from me, and it ended up with Sirius getting killed. I hope he is with you two, as he missed you more than anything. I have a fiancée now, a great guy who I am planning on marrying tomorrow". At this, Remus quickly looked at Draco. "I think you would totally approve of him, as he loves me for who I am, not who others make me out to be. I just wish you could have met him. Mum, dad, I have to go, and I'll see you as soon as I can. It may be a little while, but I'll visit as often as possible. I need to get back as the full moon is close, and Remus is feeling poorly. I love you both, I just want you to know that, and I miss you terribly". With his last words, Harry finally broke down and sobbed. Seeing this, Draco ran over to him, and pulled him up into a strong embrace.
"Shhh Harry, it's all right, I'm here. You can cry; it's all right. I can't say that I know how you feel, because I don't. I do know that I feel like it would kill me to loose a parent, but I haven't. I just want you to know that I love you with all my being, and I'm here for you. Come on now, let's step back and allow Remus some time, and to place the flowers we brought". Draco said as he slowly guided Harry back into the path so Remus could get to the two graves.
Remus placed the flowers on each grave, and said a few words that the boys couldn't make out. He then turned to both boys, motioning with his hand for them to walk on up the path. Draco kept his arm around Harry, allowing Harry to lean on him and support some of his weight. Draco knew along with Remus that this would be hard on Harry. How couldn't it be, Draco thought, to see your parent’s graves for the first time? They walked slowly out of the cemetery and then followed Remus down the road and back to the town square where again, the monument changed to the statues of Harry and his parents. When Harry saw them, he buried his face into Draco's shoulder. Draco held him close and led him by the monument so Harry wouldn't have to see them again. They walked on out of town and back to the copse of trees to disapparate.
"Harry, I didn't think you wanted to go by your old home, as it's at the other end of town. When your ready, I'll bring you back any time you want to see it. They kind of made it a memorial too. It's been preserved just as it was on Halloween night all those years ago. Come on pup let me get you home. Draco can now disapparate himself since he knows where he's going. I'll take you side-along and give Draco a rest". Remus explained while holding his arm out to Harry to take.
Harry nodded at this and took Remus's arm. "Thanks Remus, and Draco, I'll see you in a short bit. Let's go home shall we, I need some rest".
Draco nodded and disapparated first, then Remus followed taking Harry along with him. They all apparated at the hunting lodge and went inside not saying much to each other. They somberly went to their rooms, going straight to bed, even though it was still early. Draco spooned up behind Harry, wrapping his arms tightly around him, and began singing a soft song into the air, helping Harry drift off for some much needed rest.
Thanks again all, for the reviews and the votes!
Sneakyfox: No, I've never seen the movie. When I wrote this part, I was thinking about what I would have done to get even. There was a movie here in the US about a computer corporation named Nerv if I recall, which was made to resemble Micor$oft and Billy Gates. They were dirty, and in the end, their complete source code and recordings of their criminal activities were shown over the satalite TV system for everyone to see. I have the movie somewhere, but can't remember the name.
