Overcoming Humor
Chapter Fourteen – Overcoming Humor.
Severus gestured to Hermione to enter the pensieve and then he entered as well.
They were sitting in a dark room surrounded by people. Everyone’s attention was directed at the stage in front of them. On the stage were a three-legged stool and a microphone stand. There was a single spotlight directed at the person sitting on the stool.
Hermione recognized the man from one of the muggle television shows her father watched frequently. She turned to Severus and gave him a questioning look.
“You know that muggle?” He speculated.
“Yes,” Hermione answered, “He is a famous comedian. My father says that he is the funniest man alive.”
“Exactly,” Severus countered with a hint of a smirk, “The first thing you will learn to conceal will be humor.”
“How am I going to do that?” Hermione asked as a hush fell over the people in the room.
“It is quite simple Miss Granger,” Severus stated, “for every time you so much as smile, Gryffindor will lose five points.”
######################################################
Hermione and Severus returned to the classroom two hours later in relative silence.
Hermione’s mouth hurt from trying not to smile but she was proud to say that the Gryffindor hourglass was only twenty rubies lighter.
“Professor, why is it important to know how to hide humor? Isn’t humor a good emotion?”
Severus put away the pensieve as he considered how best to answer. If such a question had come from any other student he would have considered it impertinent; but he knew that this student was unlikely to ask any question that she had not already applied her mind to and been unsuccessful with.
“What do you consider ‘good emotions’ Miss Granger?”
“Well, emotions which make you feel good. Things like happiness, humor, compassion… love.”
Severus was quiet for a moment, thinking of how to phrase his answer. He could tell from the look on Hermione’s face that she was worried that her definition was not good enough.
“If a person who believes you to be loyal to their cause can look into your mind at will and see that you loathe everything they stand for, wouldn’t you be in danger?”
Hermione nodded.
“Similarly, if that person could see that you are happy when they fail, that you find humor in their incompetence, that you feel compassion for their victims, would you not be in the same amount of danger?”
“Thank you professor,” Hermione answered nodding again, “I believe I understand now. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight Miss Granger.”
As the door shut Severus considered his student’s uncharacteristic behavior. She hadn’t realized that he had only answered part of her question. He had left out an emotion that must be overcome. He had not spoken of love, and yet it was the most dangerous of all.
After all, didn’t he know firsthand about its casualties, hadn’t he almost been killed because of its foolishness, wasn’t it love that had bound him to that decade of dual servitude and then left him alone and half dead?
Then why hadn’t he told her that it was her own love of her parents that put them at greater risk than anything else? Was it because he couldn’t bear to be the one to ruin the ideal of love for her? Perhaps he just wanted to allow her a while longer with her childish notions of the power and purity of love. She would find out the truth soon enough after all, let her dream for just a while longer.
‘Besides,’ Severus told himself, ‘just because I am bitter and lonely doesn’t mean that everyone else has to be.’
#######################################################
Hermione’s return to Gryffindor tower was uneventful and gave her time to think about the past few hours. She had thought at first that it would be uncomfortable to spend time one on one with a teacher for so long, but she found that it was quite easy for her to stay in the company of Professor Snape without feeling awkward at all.
She found herself glancing at him ever so often during the show and had seen him chuckle at a few of the jokes. On one such occasion he had caught her gaze and held it for a moment before turning back to the stage. Even now just remembering that moment her heart was racing. It was one thing to sit in a crowded classroom with him, but the knowledge that the others in that memory had been shadows, that in reality they had been sitting alone together, was quite different.
‘It’s not really that different,’ Hermione chided herself, ‘You are just old enough now to think of him as a person instead of just as a teacher.’
But from the moment that it entered her mind, Hermione knew that person was the wrong word for Severus Snape. He was a hero. He was intelligent and brave. He was a man who deserved so much more than he got out of life. He had helped save the world and yet here he was, still teaching a bunch of idiot children who were completely ungrateful for the continued existence that he had a major part in giving to them.
As she entered Gryffindor tower, Hermione had made up her mind. She was going to see to it that she did her part to thank Professor Snape. She was going to be nice to him and hopefully become his friend. He deserved to be cared about after all the things he had done for the wizarding community.
There may or may not have been a thought in the back of her mind that laughed at her own idea. This part of her may or may not have told her that she wanted a lot more than that from the Potions Master. But whether or not this voice spoke Hermione knew that it was wrong, after all... he wouldn’t want to be with his know-it-all Gryffindor student. Would he?

A/N – I am not sure I like this chapter; I didn’t want to just do one lesson because there are a lot of different emotions that make a person react in different ways… so I would definitely appreciate any comments on this chapter.
Oh and I have noticed that there have been a few people who have a problem with how quickly Hermione and Ginny reconciled and I would like to clear that up for them. I need you all to keep in mind a few things. 1. Ginny was only mad because Ron made it seem like Hermione had insulted their mom, so once Ginny realized that Ron was probably exaggerating she got over it. 2. All that anyone did was give Hermione the silent treatment. 3. Hermione is a smart girl and she realizes that friends will fight and it is dumb to hold a grudge over something silly.
There, rant over I hope that makes it easier for everyone to enjoy Ginny’s character just a little more.
Thanks and Review please!!!!
