Chapter 14:Pansy
Hermione's Point Of View
I dress slowly, despite what Blaise asks of me. I liked Malfoy best last night; I actually got to know him, to know things about him. It helps me to understand him, and it was also great because he didn't push me to do anything. He had me in his bed for Merlin’s sakes, and he didn't try anything. It makes me very grateful.
I pull on my robes, stash my wand in my pocket, and pick up my scarf and gloves. I go down to the Common Room to find Blaise there alone.
"Where's Malfoy?" I ask.
Zabini smirks at me. "Writing a letter home."
"Oh, right. He mentioned something about that last night."
"I think you're good for him, Granger."
I'm actually a bit startled by that. "Really?"
Zabini nods, "And I find it very endearing that you guys still call each other by your surnames."
I smile and shrug, "Always have."
"So, why were you in his bed this morning, Ms. Granger? What would the Professors think?" Zabini asks me mockingly.
"I was in his bed this morning because of bad dreams last night, and frankly my dear, I don't give a damn what the Professors would have to say"
Zabini clutches his chest right below his heart, "Oh, Merlin. I'm having a heart attack!" he says, while not completely hiding his laughter.
"Shut up," I say, throwing a glove at his face.
"Are you going to help us today?"
"Help you do what?"
"Find good pranks for Potter and Weasley."
I sigh, "Don't you think we should leave them alone now? They haven't even looked at me this week!"
"Well, I didn't say we were going to do anything to them immediately," Zabini answers, with a gleam in his eye, "But we do need to be prepared."
I shake my head and roll my eyes, "I guess so."
"Great! Oh, and, Granger?"
"What?"
"Watch out for Pansy."
My stomach drops, "What's that supposed to mean?"
"She's in love with Draco," Zabini says, shrugging, "she always has been, and she's out for your blood, she saw you two being all lovey dovey one day."
"How? We've been careful!"
"Well, you guys aren't exactly spies, you're not that good at hiding it."
"But we never do anything in the corridors."
"No, you don't think you ever do. It's just the looks that pass between you. Well regardless, she knows something's up. Watch out."
I groan. "Great."
"Hey, don't worry about it. Draco's head over heels right now. He isn't going to let some slag mess this all up."
I smile. "He really does like me, doesn't he?"
"Very much," says a voice behind me. I turn around, blushing deeply. "And I hope to God you feel the same way, Granger, because I just owled my parents and told them about us."
I smile at him. "Of course I do."
"And now everyone can know, Granger, even your precious Finnegan. We aren't going to be a secret anymore."
I smile even more broadly and move towards him. "Excellent," I say, leaning in and kissing him on the lips. His arms instinctively go around my waist.
"Can we go now?" Zabini moans from behind us.
We leave the Common Room with him, and make our way down to the entrance hall. Malfoy grabs onto my hand and holds it loosely, like he does it all of the time. I smile in spite of myself. We are passing other students on our way down, and everyone is watching us interestingly.
Then I remember Parkinson.
"Malfoy?"
"Hmm?" he answers contentedly, basking in the fact that all students are looking our way as we're walking.
"Zabini said Parkinson wants to kill me," I say, sounding terribly juvenile.
"Then jinx her," he answers casually.
I laugh loudly, startling some of the first years walking directly in front of us.
"I can't use magic in the halls and such, Malfoy. You're a Head, you should know the rules."
He looks at me from the corner of his eye.
"I do know them, but that doesn't mean I'm going to follow them constantly."
"Malfoy, you are Head Boy!" I start, but Zabini cuts me off.
"Granger, we don't need to hear a lecture right now," he says as we approach Filch, who is jabbing students with the secrecy sensor. We watch him jab Parvati Patil extra hard, and she walks away rubbing her ribs.
All eyes slowly swivel to Malfoy and I standing hand in hand at the back of the line. Whispers break out quickly, and I can't help but feel slightly embarrassed. Popularity, in any form, isn't something I'm good at. Malfoy squeezes my hand and Zabini makes an odd sound low in his throat. The queue moves slowly and it is finally our turn to be jabbed by Filch. Once we're through the doors Malfoy grins at me. "Well, people sure took notice to us quickly."
"Well of course they did. It's going to be a big topic for a long while I think."
"So, what are we going to buy?" Zabini asks, as a cold wind whips our faces. It seems a bit early for the cold to be hitting already, it's only almost October.
"For the pranks?" Malfoy asks, "Anything painful."
Zabini smirks coldly, I just sigh.
When we get to the village I'm instantly dragged in the direction of the Weasleys' joke shop.
"You guys aren't wasting any time."
"Nope."
We enter the crowded shop, and Malfoy has to let go of my hand. It becomes cold quickly. Malfoy and Zabini prowl the shop, and I'm following along in their wake.
"Now remember, Granger, they can't know about us until after you've bought all the things we need," Malfoy reminds me, referring to Fred and George.
"Yes, I know."
They quickly begin filling their arms with jokes and pranks. After they've found everything they need they pile it all into my arms and slip money into my pocket. I walk up to the counter and drop everything onto it. Fred himself appears. Malfoy and Zabini hang back, blending in with the crowd.
"Hey, Hermione."
"Hi, Fred," I say, smiling hugely.
"Wow, you're stocking up."
I grin at him, "I sure am."
He prices it all out and I pay him. I'm just turning to walk away when Fred’s voice sounds loudly.
"Hey! Get outta here you lot," he says, looking directly and Malfoy and Zabini.
"We were just leaving," Malfoy says coldly, turning to leave the shop.
"Fred and George are nice," I tell them once we are back outside.
"Well, I'm not too impressed with some of his family members," Malfoy answers, relieving me of some bags, handing a few to Zabini too.
"They aren't like that," I assure him, "They would probably disown Ron if I told them what had happened."
"They should," Zabini says coldly, "Let’s go to the Three Broomsticks for a butterbeer, I'm freezing."
Malfoy and I agree, heading that way. Malfoy grabs onto my free hand with his. I smile at him.
Once we enter the pub, almost everyone goes silent and they're all staring and Malfoy and I.
"Just ignore them," he says, pulling me towards an empty booth. Zabini and I slide in and Malfoy goes to join the long line to buy us all drinks.
"So it's true," a shrill voice says from behind me, and I can't help but flinch slightly, "You're stealing my boyfriend right from under my nose." I turn around to face Pansy Parkinson.
"I'm not stealing anything," I say quietly.
"Shut up, Mudblood. What spell do you have him under? It must be something strong, for him to be so close to you, even touching you. I'm surprised he hasn't died from embarrassment."
I say nothing; I just sink lower into the padded seat trying to hide my quickly reddening face.
"Go away, Pansy," Blaise says.
"Oh, you're sticking up for the Mudblood now, too?"
Pansy moves around the table so she can see my face, and I try to look away from her, but she grabs onto my chin tightly, forcing my eyes to meet hers.
"Stay the fuck away from Draco," she says steadily, "or you will have to answer to me."
I can feel the tears beginning to well in my eyes, but the last thing I want is for Parkinson to make me cry.
"Did you hear me, Mudblood?"
I nod.
"So what are you waiting for?" she asks nastily, "Get out, go back to your room, and try and avoid him for all you're worth, which isn't very much."
I don't move, but I can't think of anything to say. I'm not so great with confrontations.
She pulls out her wand quickly, shoving it against my cheek.
"Pansy," Zabini says weakly.
"Shut up," she spits at him.
"Get the fuck out!!" she screams at me suddenly, and her wand presses harder into my face. I gulp and slide out of the booth, pushing past her in my haste to leave. The tears suddenly crash over the barrier and pour down my cheeks, stinging my cheeks in the cold air.
I make it about ten feet before I stop, I can hear yelling inside the pub that I just abandoned. Moments later Malfoy comes rushing out of the door, yelling for me. Zabini is a few feet behind him, carrying all of the bags from WWW.
"Granger?!" and then he sees me. He rushes forwards and pulls me into his arms roughly.
"She's not my girlfriend," he says quickly.
"I know," I say, smiling weakly.
"You are," he says.
"I know," I say again.
"God, I'm so sorry, Granger."
"It's okay," I say, shaking my head and turning to walk back up the village and back to school.
Malfoy grabs my arm and pulls me back towards him. He pulls me flush against his body, and holds my face in his hands. "I really like you, Granger, and I promised myself that you are not going to be hurt because of me, or those around me." I can hear the bell jingling above the door of the pub, but Malfoy leans down and kisses me fiercely. I kiss him back with abandon, wrapping my arms around him tightly.
"Draco!" the shrill voice screams.
I break the kiss and start walking away, and Malfoy walks with me, grabbing my hand.
"Draco! Stop!! Stop right now! Get back here!" She screams insanely. Zabini falls into step beside us, but Malfoy stops. He turns around and drags me back with him, despite my protests.
"Shut your fucking mouth, Parkinson, you're giving me a headache," he says nastily. "I'm not your boyfriend. I never was! I don't know who you think you are, but you better just shut the fuck up. Look," he says, wrenching our clasped hands into the air, "I'm with Granger okay? Now get that through your thick skull."
Parkinson starts laughing; it's shrill and reminds me of a very loud whistle.
"You're 'with' her, but you won't even call her by her first name? How's that for respect?" she says, glaring daggers at me.
I don't answer, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to or not.
"Get over it, you slag," Malfoy says rudely, pulling me alongside him, back up the village road.
I can hear the other students snickering behind us. I sigh, and wipe the tear tracks off of my face.
"Your father is going to have something to say about this, Draco!" Pansy yells. Malfoy stops and drops my hand. He turns around and starts walking back towards her quickly. I watch him grab her roughly by the cloak and literally drag her into an alley between stores. I purse my lips, not liking his attitude at all.
"Shut your mouth, Pansy!" I hear Malfoy say harshly.
"It's true, and you know it. Your father is going to break you guys up. He's going to disown you if you try and stay with her. You know our parents want us to marry," she says, and I can feel her shrill voice penetrating my mind. They were supposed to get married? My heart drops a little bit.
"I'm never going to marry you, Pansy" Malfoy replies. "And stop talking about my family like you know them."
"I know them, Draco. I do know how your father beat the shit out of you last year. I know how your slag mother takes it at all of those Death Eater meetings. I know how-" but what she did know, nobody heard. There was a loud slapping sound and Pansy shrieked in pain. I turn, my mouth gaping open, and run. I run all the way through Hogsmeade, all the way up to the castle and all the way up to my Common Room.
Malfoy hit her! That is all I can think about. There is a ripping pain in my side from running to hard, and so far, but I can barely notice it. All I can imagine is Malfoy hitting Pansy. What if he hit me?
